ASSOCIATE OF ARTS DEGREE<br />

<strong>UMUC</strong> <strong>Europe</strong> offers programs of study leading to <strong>UMUC</strong><br />

associate’s and bachelor’s degrees. Students should consult with<br />

a <strong>UMUC</strong> field representative at their local education center<br />

about programs offered in their community. All requirements<br />

noted for the AA degree involve lower-level courses, although<br />

appropriate upper-level courses may be substituted.<br />

CURRICULUM REQUIREMENTS 25<br />

Students may choose a general curriculum or a specialized<br />

curriculum and must take 25 credits of coursework within their<br />

chosen curriculum. For the specialized curricula, at least 9 credits in<br />

core or core-related coursework for the chosen curriculum must be<br />

earned through <strong>UMUC</strong>.<br />

Students must earn a grade of C or higher in all core or core-related<br />

curriculum courses.<br />

The general curriculum is described on p. 42 and the specialized<br />

curricula are described on pp. 43-61 of this <strong>Catalog</strong>.<br />

G accounting<br />

G business and management<br />

G computer studies<br />

G foreign language area studies<br />

(Arabic, German, Italian, Spanish)<br />

G management studies<br />

G mathematics<br />

G women’s studies<br />

COMMON ASSOCIATE OF ARTS<br />

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS<br />

1. The Associate of Arts degree (AA) requires<br />

the completion of a minimum of 60 credits,<br />

of which at least 15 must be taken through<br />

<strong>UMUC</strong>.<br />

2. Of these 60 credits, 35 credits must be earned<br />

in courses that fulfill the general education<br />

requirements.<br />

3. The remaining 25 credits must satisfy the<br />

requirements of the curriculum the student<br />

has selected.<br />

4. A grade point average of 2.0 or higher in all<br />

courses taken through <strong>UMUC</strong> is required.<br />

Students must earn a grade of C or higher in<br />

all core or core-related curriculum courses.<br />

5. A student may pursue a second AA degree only<br />

after the awarding of the first AA.<br />

(see Second Associate’s Degree in the <strong>Catalog</strong>).<br />

A. Communications 9<br />

G WRTG 101 (3 credits)<br />

Must be completed within first 18 credits with <strong>UMUC</strong>.<br />

Placement test required. May not be earned through credit by<br />

examination.<br />

G Another writing course (3 credits)<br />

All 3-credit WRTG courses (except WRTG 288, 388, 486A<br />

or 486B); ENGL 102, 294, 303, and 485; JOUR 201 apply.<br />

G A course in communication, writing, or speech (3 credits)<br />

All 3-credit COMM, SPCH, and WRTG courses<br />

(except 486A and 486B); ENGL 102, 281, 294, 303, 384,<br />

and 485; and JOUR 201 apply.<br />

Note: No more than 3 credits of writing credit may be earned<br />

through credit by examination.<br />

B. Arts and Humanities 6<br />

G One 3-credit course that offers a historical perspective<br />

(any 3-credit ARTH or HIST).<br />

G One 3-credit course chosen from the following disciplines:<br />

ARTH, ARTT, ASTD (not all apply), GRCO, HIST, HUMN,<br />

MUSC, PHIL, THET, dance, literature, or foreign language.<br />

Note: The two courses must be in different disciplines.<br />

C. Behavioral and Social Sciences 6<br />

G One 3-credit course each in two of the following disciplines:<br />

AASP (AASP 201 only), ANTH, ASTD (not all apply), BEHS,<br />

CCJS, ECON, GEOG, GERO, GVPT, PSYC, SOCY, or<br />

WMST (WMST 200 only). Note: Not all CCJS and GERO<br />

courses apply.<br />

D. Biological and Physical Sciences 7<br />

G A science lecture course (3 credits) with related laboratory course<br />

(1 credit) or a science course combining lecture and laboratory<br />

(4 credits).<br />

G Any other science course (3 credits)<br />

Note: Courses from the following disciplines satisfy both<br />

requirements: ASTR, BIOL, CHEM, GEOL, NSCI, PHYS,<br />

biotechnology, botany, entomology, general science, and zoology.<br />

E. Mathematics 3<br />

G MATH 103, MATH 106, MATH 107, or a course<br />

at or above the level of college algebra.<br />

Students should refer to the specific curriculum for requirements<br />

or recommendations.<br />

Must be completed within the first 18 credits with <strong>UMUC</strong>.<br />

Placement test required.<br />

F. Interdisciplinary or Emerging Issues 4<br />

G LIBS 150 Introduction to Research (1 credit),<br />

which must be completed within the first 18 credits with <strong>UMUC</strong>.<br />

G IFSM 201 (3 credits)<br />
