Objectives
Guangzhou Live has today established
its reputation as an important event in
Asia in the field. The goal is to present
the leading international contemporary
action art, with artists of the highest
quality from around the world. But at
the same time it should be a showcase
that pushes the limits, a model for a different
way of presenting contemporary
art, a model for art’s accessibility and
cultural democracy.
The festival promotes action art’s experimental,
mobile, global, intercultural
and profoundly human character
towards a professional and an uninitiated
audience. However, Guangzhou Live
will continue to be an event produced
on a human scale.
We want to remove as many obstacles
as possible so that all members of society,
regardless of income, social class, place
of residence, age, gender, or ethnic
origin, can participate in the experience
of the artwork presented. That’s why the
entrance to Guangzhou Live’s different
parts are free, that’s the reason why we
present the works of art in public space
as well as in the art institution.
By eliminating the possible barriers to
participation, we want to bridge the
invisible societal walls that can exist.
The project’s accessibility is its starting
point with a tailor made international
program based on the idea of cultural
democracy and everybody’s right to b
given access to contemporary art and
culture. But it also proposes a natural
approach to an international pespective
through the invited artists’ different cultural
origin.
The internationalization of the art scene
in Guangzhou and the Pearl River Delta
is not only necessary but inevitable.
Guangzhou Live responds to this by
offering an artistic program that includes
artists from most of the world’s continents
and through networking with
other major festivals in North America,
Europe and Asia. But also to promote an

educational integration through a training
program that is part of the festival
and addressed to art students in Guangzhou
and the Guangdong province.
External Strategy
Guangzhou Live’s strategy as a festival in
the international competition is based
on artistic quality and credibility, organizational
stability and active international
networking. In other words, on its
organization and international outlook.
This is one of the reasons that we for
the 2012 edition will continue to invite
artists with an influience in their own regions
and countries. As to be able to initiate
an exchange between other international
producers and chinese artists.
New Format
Guangzhou Live 2012 will be further
developed through a new program for
art critics, “writing action”, how to write
about action art. The festival will commission
the texts of two Chinese art critics
that are to be invited to write about
one of the featured artists’ work.
