For the 2nd edition of Guangzhou Live we
decided to change the venue of the festival
to the artist village of Xiaozhou and
the YouYou Contemporary Art Center. This
was mainly because of its proximity to
the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art and
its 8000 art students, another reason was
Xiaozhou’s beautiful environment and scenery
with around 6000 preparatory art students
and 1500 artists living there. Being a
preserved village from the Ming dyanasty,
with a strong attraction to artists as well as
tourists, and more important with a normal
village life, Xiaozhou turned out to be an
ideal choice for Guangzhou Live.
In this 2nd edition we were able to feature
a program of 30 international and chinese
artists with some of the very best like Huang
Rui and Shu Yang from Beijing, Liu Wei from
Chengdu and Du Liang and Ou Zhihang
from Guangzhou. But also of course a strong
international line-up with Zygmunt Piotrowski
from Poland, Tomas Ruller from the
Czech Republic, Valentin Torrens from Spain,
Stein Henningsen from Norway, Monali Meher
from the Netherlands, Mideo M. Cruz
from the Philippines or for that matter Roddy
Hunter from the United Kingdom, amongst
others.
Although, keeping the same high level as
in the 1st edition the great difference from
the preceding year was the impressive media
attention that we received. As you can
see below in the media list of GL 2, we accomplished
to attract 7 television channels
who all reported about the event. But also 3
of the major newspapers in Guangzhou like
the Yangcheng Evening News, Information
Times and Guangzhou Daily all with an edition
of more than. 1,5 million copies. Besides
these we did also get the attention from numerous
web based magazines and journals.
The 2nd edition also saw an audience in
the thousands, on the one hand to the exhibition
(12000) which was inaugurated a
week before the live festival and ending
two weeks after the event. But also to the
live action event itself. This proved us right
to have changed the location to be closer to
the audience of interested art students and
tourists as well as to the 200 000 students at
the University Island. Although most of the
art works were presented on the city sqaure
and the adjacent YouYou Contemporary Art
Centre, GL 2 also took place in other outdoor
places in the Xiaozhou village to the artists
and audiences great pleasure.
