When I speak of old and young, you must 1
ooderstand tboee saints that are found alive at
Christ's eoieiiig, which are changed; for all the
deceased saints are raised to an equal perfeii^
even as the other are changed into the same I
exactness, thcngh at Christ's appearing differ-
EXPOSITIOS OF ISAIAH Ixt. 20.
»T DK. K. HOJIIS, 1653.
Seeing a call ia tiie Herald from Eld. Longb-
borougb, for light on the meaning of Isaiah
XV. 20, reminds me of what-I have thought of
doing for some months past, bat till now bave
neglected—viz: to copy and send for publica-
tios in year paper I^. Hoas' view of the
passage, written more than 200 years ago,
which, though old, will, I think, be new to
most of your readers, and in my opinion clearly
solve a hitherto difficult text. I extract all
he fays upon tbe chapter, which, though
lengthy, is worth tbe reading. Dr. H. was a
millenarian, and I tbink you will find by ex-
amination that his criticisms on the Hebrew
word K*t, Tendered "for" in the verse; also
his change of the conjnctive " but" into " or,
etc., is sustained by tbe lexicc^rapbers, see
Frey; also Boy, pp. 355; Pick, pp. 160; Gese-
oius, pages -157—461.
In answering the inquiry, " Wbat that glo-
rious state on earth shall be at the restitution
of all things," Homes says that as to its qual
ities it win be " Negatively; sinless, sorrowless,
deathless, superiorless, temptationless ' and
timeless ; and positively; it will be the res-
toration of tbe creation, perfection of all qual-
ities;, confidcnee of all ccmforti^ and preface to
eternity." And it is while proving the death-
leaness cf tbe millennial age tbat he gives us
the following: " To deal faithfully with von,
there is only one sonsiderable place that
know of relatiog to tbe time I speak of, that
hath something of an intimation of mortality
to be in those times, and that is Isa. Ixv. 20.
It clearly relates to the time we s^ak of, verse
7: 'Bdfco!d I create new heavens and new
rarth,' etc., which Peter refers to this time
Pet iiL 13, in relation to the promise in
Isa. Ixr. Now the 20tb verse, our Vsnslators
bave rendered thus: There shall be no more
tbsize an in&nt of days, nor an old man that
hath not filled his days: for the child shall die
an hundred years old; bot tbe sinner being an
hondred years old »hall be accursed." Now
as &r aa I ean see into languages and the con-
text, these words,' for the ohild shall dk' etc.
may be more fitly trasslated ' that Uio child
should die,' etc., ' For tbe word Kee, in the
Hebrew, is exceeding often used—yea and so
rendered by translators—to signify that as
we have here rendered it As for turning
into should, it is not worth the mentioning
before a gramariaa, wbo know, that tbe word
so rendered, will infer that tbe verb speak sub-
unctiTely. Now read tbe words so easily
altered in the EogUab, and without the least
violence to tbe Hebrew, and tBe meaning vrill
be qoiie contrary to any intimation of tbe
mortality of the s^ts in tiiis glorious time of
tbe thousand years. For according as we have
translated, tbe sense will run clearly thus—
' There diall be no more thence (or from that
time, via, tbe beginning of tbe thousand years
of tbe new creation,) an in&nt of days, or an
old nutn tbat bath not filled bis days, that tbe
child (or you^g man) should die at an busdred
years,* ete. So tbat here is no meation of &e
mortality of the saints, but of their immor-
talitj. Wbieb for farther clearing of tbe
text, may be made out two ways.
" I. ^na: He tbat is an hundred years old
it 'lad, young man,'yeatb,' T.] a youtb or
