For those of you who were fortunate enough to see the ‘Wizard of Oz” I am sure you will agree that it was an out‐
standing producon.
I wish to congratulate the staff involved for their commitment and willingness to get the best out of the students in
the cast and crew. In parcular, my thanks to the Director Catherine Litchfield. Catherine informs me that this is
her 9 th Musical at KWS. Three of these she was involved in as a student and the other 6 in the role of Director.
In addion, my congratulaons to Musical Director Amy Coad, Producon and Stage Manager Dave Budden, Chore‐
ographer Marnie Grogan, Repeteur Dahl Innes, Set Design and Art Work Maddie Young and Sally Dent. There was
a large group of parents who helped with the running and producon of the musical and I am grateful for their will‐
ingness to assist in this demanding role.
At this week’s assembly we honoured the students who took part in this producon. I congratulate each and every
one of them for what was an exceponal musical in every sense. I thank you the parents for your support of the
musical by aending the various shows and ensuring that the cast and crew were available for the rigorous re‐
hearsal schedule.
Thanks and Goodluck to Jane
I am wring to advise that Jane Pringle, as the Secretary to the Registrar has resigned from her posion, effecve as
I take this opportunity to acknowledge Jane’s outstanding work in this role, since she first joined the school in 2004.
Over her me with us, Jane’s posion has evolved, mainly due to her outstanding skills and abilies, parcularly
with her knowledge and understanding of the Denbigh Database.
Jane has resigned for personal reasons and I take this opportunity to wish her all the best and thank her most sin‐
cerely for all her outstanding work here at Kinross Wolaroi School, during her me with us.
Withdrawal of Students
I would like to remind parents that, under the terms of enrolment a student can only be withdrawn from his/her
enrolment at the end of a School term. This includes withdrawal as a boarder or change in status from a boarder to
a day student.
Wrien noce of withdrawal of a student, or change of status as a boarder, must be provided to the Principal no
later than one term prior to the withdrawal or change of status of the student; ie to withdraw a student at the end
of term, noce must be given at the end of the previous term.
Thank you for your assistance with this.
Wizard of Oz
I was fortunate to see the very first performance on Thursday last week with Year 7 and 8. My head is sll spinning
from the visual feast that was this producon! The number of costume changes and the amazing sets were mind
blowing. The enre cast was outstanding, as was the musical orchestra. It was hard to believe it was not a profes‐
sional producon when hearing the likes of Olivia Fisher, Ben Wa, Luke Eberle and Angus Crutcher sing. Congratu‐
laons to all the staff involved, in parcular, Mrs Litchfield (Director), Mr Budden (Producer) and our three Music
Staff, Miss Coad (Musical Director), Miss Innes and Mrs Moxey.
HICES Forms due this Friday
All students aending the HICES Music Fesval must return their forms by this Friday 27 July. Please give your
forms to Mrs Chapman in the Music Centre Supervisor Office.
AOBO Young Performers
Three of our music students have been accepted into the Young Performers Program at the Australian Opera and
Ballet Orchestra: Leonie Pringle (Flute, Year 12), Annabelle Carter (Violin, Year 11) and Cecelia Carter (Clarinet, Year
9). They are three of very few students accepted into the program across the State and will have a chance to per‐
form in an Opera Australia producon at the Sydney Opera House. Congratulaons to you all.
Asan Dance Theatre
On Monday 23 July, the whole of Year 7 spent period 6 playing African Drums, clapping, singing and dancing to the
rhythms and songs of Asan Dance Theatre. It was a wonderful event, which focused on call and response, beat
and various rhythmic paerns. Year 7 students are studying “Music Around The World” this semester and the per‐
formance really solidified some of the concepts we have been teaching in class. The students parcularly loved the
aerial flips of the incredibly talented dancer and playing of the “African Playstaon” which is a hand held pair of
rales strung together to be spun and stuck together in an intricate paern. I think they also liked the part where
all the teachers stood up and danced a chicken dance!
Have a wonderful week!
Rugby Report
KWS 1st XV Vs St Patricks College 1st XV
With the ancipaon of a home game and the support of 4 ex‐student reunions on a day made for running rugby,
there was an air of excitment surrounding the Main Oval. St.Pats were riding high aer beang Stannies in their last
oung, and this encounter was sure to be an epic struggle. The first half saw the home team lead at the break 10‐5
aer sustained pressure, two well worked tries to Lucas Ferrari and Tom Harbison and a solid defensive line. The
second half started in a similar fashion, bruising defence and few opportunies but as the game wore on it
was apparent that the visitors had underesmated the influence of the home crowd as well as the fitness and te‐
nacity of their opponents. Six unanswered tries and four conversions was nothing short of remarkable. The backline
were firing all cylinders. The inclusion of Tom Bristow was a welcome return as he skillfully gained field posion and
used the width of the field. The forward pack once again wore down their opponents by dominang the breakdown
and pressuring the Pats lineouts. With 4 more ISA games to be played we connue to play for a top 3 finish and an
undefeated record at home.
Tries: J Yeomans 2, L Ferrari, T Harbison, B Freeman, A Hancock, M Dodds.
Conversions: T Bristow 4, Penalty: T Bristow
3 Points: Arthur Hancock, 2 Points: Jack Yeomans, 1 Point: Jack Marchinton, Tom Harbison, Angus Whitaker
KWS 2nd XV Vs St Patricks College 2nd XV
The 2 nd XV could not have started beer on Saturday Vs St Pats with a perfect kick‐off resulng in an opposion
player being bundled in to touch about 20m out from the line. A well‐executed driving lineout was then performed
and we had first points for the game. Sadly the game had 65mins remaining and our physical commitment aer
that point was not as great as was required. Poor defensive pressure and line speed gave St Pats the me and
space they needed to mount some sustained aack. Despite all giving our best to get back in to the game, we were
unable to cross their line again and had three converted tries put on us. I am confident that lessons learnt in this
game will stand us in good stead for the coming games. Watch this space!
Score: KWS 5 ‐ St Pats 21
KWS 3rd XV Vs St Patricks College 3rd XV
The KWS 3 rd XV began sluggishly on the weekend, allowing St Pats to score an early try aer a 5m scrum pass was
intercepted. KWS fought back with Kane Gardner running elusively, drawing two defenders before dummying in‐
side and then throwing an outside pass to a rampaging Connor Mendham who crashed over to open the scoring for
KWS. Tom Rolfe converted to put KWS in the lead. St Pats replied with another 2 unconverted tries and were look‐
ing dangerous on the KWS 5m line when the half me whistle blew. With Connor Mendham and Hamish Jamieson
coming off the field due to injury, Alex Robinson and Charles McIntosh stepped up. Alex had an immediate impact
on the game with a 15m charge through the defence before having the ball dislodged when on the try line but he
managed to regather, spin and score. The try was converted to see KWS trailing 14‐15. St Pats scored again to es‐
tablish an 8 point lead with 8 minutes to go. KWS then moved up a gear and Alex Robinson scored an amazing chip
and chase try from 40m out including some great soccer skills. The conversion hit the post to leave KWS 3 points
behind with me running out. Tom Rolfe beat a number of defenders and then got the ball to Lachlan Williams who
was brought down 2m short of the try line. KWS managed to maintain possession for 3 phases before Ben Kremer
crashed over to win the game. Tom Rolfe converted to see the final score 26‐22. This was an amazing fight back by
the 3rds who played brilliantly in the second half to take the win from a strong opponent.
3 points went to Ben Kremer for man of the match. 2 points to Tom Rolfe and 1 point each to Alex Robinson, Jock
Fuller, Jordan Williams and Kane Gardner.
KWS 16 Bs Vs St Patricks College
The KWS 16B’s played some inspired Rugby to record a 21 ‐12 win against St Pat’s on Saturday. This was the 16B’s
first win of the season and was well deserved considering the team’s dedicated approach to training.
The 16B’s began the game well with disciplined play pung us in good field posion but a dropped pass led to St
Pat’s scoring the first try. This was converted to give Pats a 7‐0 lead.
Despite this setback, the 16B’s did not panic and connued to put pressure on Pats through some commied ball
running from the likes of Beau Christopherson, Jack Conn, Robbie Blatch, Michael Brown and Jake Cooney and
some solid tackling from everyone in a two blue jumper but especially Robbie Blatch, Michael Brown, Tim Gillham
and James Pansini. The B’s forward pack also made its presence felt through some impressive work in the scrum.
However, Pats were able to soak up the pressure and maintain possession in our half and this led to them crossing
our line again to make it 12 ‐0 at half me.
At half me skipper Andrew Stanbrook summed it up nicely when he said that the scoreboard was not an accurate
reflecon of how the boys had played and that if everyone put in a big effort in the second half then the match
would be ours – or words to that effect.
The 16B’s determinaon was reflected in their uncompromising defence in the opening few minutes of the second
half and this was too much for St Pats. A spilt ball was swooped on by Andrew Stanbrook who went on a 40 metre
run before scoring under the posts. Tim Gillham sloed the conversion to make it 12 – 7.
Hard work at the breakdown helped the 16B’s string some phases together and Robbie Blatch crashed over out
wide for a well deserved 5 pointer. The ever reliable Tim Gillham stepped up to kick a difficult conversion under
pressure to give the KWS 16B’s a 14‐12 lead.
There is lile doubt that we had taken control of the game at this point but there was sll 5 minutes on the clock.
Good play from the forwards took us to the St Pats line and Andrew Stanbrook sealed the victory with his second
try of the game. This was converted by Cameron Robinson at full me to make the final score 21 ‐12 to the 16B’s.
Al Baxter was on hand to present an autographed ball to captain Andrew Stanbrook who secured the 3 points for
the day. 2 points went to Robbie Blatch. 1 point went to Beau Christopherson, Jack Conn, Michael Brown, Cameron
Robinson, Jake Cooney, James Pansini and Doug Bradley who had a good debut.
Thanks to all parents and supporters for their help and encouragement on the day. This is much appreciated by the
boys and the coach alike. We look forward to playing some good Rugby against St Andrews away on Saturday.
Score: KWS 21 ‐ St Pats 12
KWS 15 Bs Vs St Patricks College
This was a fantasc result for the boys. They showed huge improvement in basic skills around the ruck and in the
handling out wide. Lindsay Hartnig showed great strength and determinaon all aernoon as did Will Tierney. Joey
Thomas was doing a fine job of organising the play out wide and Cameron Williams was encouraging the forwards
in the ght stuff. One of the highlights of the day was Asher Dixon’s decepve ball running, well supported by Chris
Wa and Shaun Labuschagne. We very much look forward to St Andrews this weekend.
KWS 14A Vs St Patricks College 14A
On a fine and warm Orange aernoon, KWS hosted one of the strongest teams in this age group. Aer an agonising
single‐try loss to Stannies and a heart‐stopping draw with Knox, The boys had trained hard, and looked good going
into this must‐win encounter with a team who had defeated Augusnes by 43 points to nil, and gone down fighng
to Oakhill by ten. A special session pre‐match with former Wallaby Al Baxter really assisted the boys with their
warm up, and they ran on the field more focussed than in any game to date.
The game was tough from the outset, with Pats much larger forward pack dominang in the scrum, but our quick‐
er, sneakier lose forwards constantly pinching at the breakdown. Excellent work by Tom Cummins, Jack Lamph and
Toby Condon here, with standout defence from Toby Condon and Pete Alston. The first breakthrough came aer a
lapse in concentraon following a turnover, with a Pats forward running through the unguarded rear to score un‐
der the posts. Seven nil. Our boys dug in, and carried this score through to half‐me, where they were treated to a
well‐ appreciated pep talk from Al Baxter once more, which served to focus and resele some highly strung emo‐
ons.
The second half, like the first was a grind, with scrum aer scrum and very heavy work up the centre of the field.
Our backline saw much less of the ball than it would have liked, but very effecvely halted the Pats momentum in
defence. Special menon here to Louis Carr, whose phenomenal work around the Scrum and the back of the ruck
earned him a coaches point, despite his unfortunate injury halfway through the second. Also, tackle of the day
must go to Hamish Sheehan, whose try‐ stopping effort at the very last line was both thrilling and well‐ executed.
Player of the Match Jack Lamph scored the opening try for KWS, running through at least three defenders to score
out wide. Unfortunately Hamish Sheehan put the conversion slightly wide, leaving us two off the pace. Neither side
was able to capitalise, so the score remained at the ghtest of margins when the final whistle blew; Pats running
out victors and KWS 14A with their second ght loss for the season. There was nothing in this performance to be
ashamed of, and every player gave their all. With four matches remaining this team has shown it can take it up to
the best in the compeon: Watch out Oakhill!
P/P: Jack Lamph
3 Points: Jack Lamph, 2 Points: Hamish Ellis‐Peck, 1 Point: Toby Condon and Louis Carr.
Score: KWS 5 ‐ St Patricks College 7
KWS 13 Bs Vs St Patricks College
This was a courageous display against a much physically bigger side. The boys let in a so early try but quickly
fought back as new player Kyle Gibson ran from the back of a scrum to score a good try. The opposion were domi‐
nang, parcularly at the breakdown, and the weight of possession soon told as they scored three more tries to
make the score 20‐5. The half finished on a high note as Kyle once more caught the defence napping to score under
the post. Blake Andrews converted to make the score 20‐12. The second half saw St Pats once more dominate pos‐
session and skip out to a 40‐12 lead. Milton Smith provided the highlight by running almost 90 metres to score just
before full me. The boys can be pleased with their effort in this game. Our tackling improved as the game pro‐
gressed with greater emphasis on body height at the contact point. We will work this week to ensure that our body
height at the breakdown is beer so that we can win a beer percentage of the ball. Every game sees a further im‐
provement in the side as hard training and greater confidence produce more structured football.
Soccer Report
KWS 1st XI Vs Molong
The game started slow but when Diya Alsultani sloed a volley over the keeper we were hungry for some goals!
Through many great passes and some quick running from our strikers we managed to control the game. We ended
the first half six‐nil with Dave Sellwood on a hat‐trick. The team did well in the second half, finishing the game eight
‐nil. Well done to Diya, Dave, Alastair, Max and Sam for scoring. Well played by everyone, especially Tom Glaston‐
bury for saving every shot on goal to get us our first clean sheet of the season.
KWS 15 Vs Macquarie United
This was one of those games that just didn’t go our way. Even with superior possessions throughout the second
half the KWS team couldn’t cash in on the opportunies in front of goal. Our one goal was the result of quick, slick
passing and therein lies a lesson for future games.
Score: KWS 1 ‐ Macquarie United 2
KWS 13s Vs Waratah Raiders
For the first half we were well and truly in the game, playing a fluent, compeve brand of football. Our forwards
were finding space behind their backs and pung the their goalie under pressure. For the first part of the second
half we again played well but then in the final 15 minutes we started to look vulnerable and our lack of fitness (it
has been 5 weeks since our last match) and lapses on concentraon took their toll. Four of the goals scored by Wa‐
ratahs were ‘so’ and really should have been stopped. Overall the scoreline did not really reflect the game alt‐
hough Waratahs were deserving winners. Best on the ground were Morgan, Jack, Connor W, Callum and Sam J.
Next week we go up against the leading team so we will need to work hard to make it a viable contest.
KWS 2 Vs Blayney
KWS 2 started strongly with good aack through the centre, taking the ball wide and then using the Inners Kelly
O’Connor and Brocke Harvey ‐ Dale to drive into the circle. Leading 1‐0, the strong back combinaon of Annabelle
Muon and Emma Harbison defended well, using Sophie Mion down the right side to penetrate through the field.
In the second half, Blayney were at full strength and challenged our goal several mes. Julia Parker in goal, deflect‐
ed several aempts, however was le open when a through ball to their centre forward was trapped and smashed.
A quick second goal to Blayney occurred during a lapse in concentraon and unfortunately me ran out before KWS
2 could equalise.
Many thanks to the Megan, Bell and Mo who filled in beaufully and to the lads who supported vocally!
Score: KWS 1 ‐ Blayney 2
KWS 2 Vs City
It was great to have the Haigh sisters back for this match and Alice’s organisaon from the back had the team talk‐
ing and posioning themselves well. One of the best taccal matches played this season, KWS 2 trapped and
passed proficiently. This led to us outmanoeuvring the opposion on several occasions. By Ally Thurn and Annabelle
Tierney combined well in the forwards to take advantage of quick ball. Sarah Fraser made an impressive start to her
season in the Seconds, cemenng her posion with fierce defence in the first half.
Annabelle Quigley’s tenaciousness was rewarded with a goal aer the full me siren of a short corner, even though
our girls sprinted back to half way ready to have one more chance. Our appreciaon to Lauren Coates, who did a
splendid job filling in on the wing.
Score: KWS 1 ‐ City 2
KWS U15 Aqua Vs Ex‐services
The girls played Ex‐services and got off to a great start will a goal to Olivia Kennedy. Ex services then went on the
aack; even with the efforts of Josie Bloomfield in the goal we conceded two goals. Trailing 2‐1 we then scored
through Kelsey Gray and Ally Thurn to make it 3‐2!
Ex services then scored again to level it at 3 all! We then woke up and with more goals to Ally Thurn, Kelsey Gray
and Belle Hazelton we had the game at 6‐3!
This was a stellar effort by all the girls and we keep our season without loss on track!
Score: KWS 6 ‐ Ex Services 3
U18 KWS Green Vs Cyms
The KWS Greens played a spirit filled game against a superior Cyms team on Friday night. Most of the game was
heavily defensive. We are grateful to Megan Hunt and our newest team member, Emma Cheape, for their part in
both challenging the Cyms players and clearing the ball from our circle. Gretel Bailey‐Preston performed admirably
as goalie, ensuring that the Cyms players had to work hard for each goal. By the conclusion of the game she had
certainly saved more goals than had been allowed to pass her defensive line.
KWS 2nds vs KWS Junior As
On Thursday aernoon at KWS, the girls played against a very strong Junior A's. Bridget Benne, Lucy Alward and
Sarah McIntyre all played great in defence with their strong rebounds and quick defence. Jordan Brodie, Carmen
Date and Bridget Cooper produced lots of turnovers and good strong passes bringing the ball back down the court
quickly. Sophia Cassimas, Brooke Hamilton and Rachel Gentles, had a great game, with a very high shoong per‐
centage. The 2nds won 34‐11, a great birthday present for Mrs Bylsma. Player of the week was Rachel Gentles.
KWS 3rds vs RH Perfeconists
The game was going to be a hard one with RH perfeconists on the top of the ladder. We would like to welcome
Mandy to our team replacing Emma Rutherford who has le for exchange. All of the girls played well given that it
was the first game back aer a long break. Special menon to the girls in Defence Olivia Rowlands, Kae Mckenzie,
Ashley Thompson and Annabelle Carter who turned the ball over a number of mes. This game gave us a taste of
what to expect in finals and hopefully will inspire the girls to play hard in the second half of the season.
KWS Y12 1s Vs Robin Hood CWWD
Trailing Robin Hood CWWD by 2 goals at half me, the Y12#1s played exceponally well to come back and take the
game with a final score of 27‐23. Emma Johnson had an outstanding game, predicng play and direcng the ball to
our shooters. Her intercepts allowed the game to slow and enabled KWS to mount a come back in the second half.
Charloe Murdoch and Ali Marn were instrumental in defending the circle and their teamwork allowed KWS to
gain much of the ball possession in the game. Annie Wa, Ally Davidson and Lucy Knaggs all contributed to the final
goal score, with parcularly strong shoong performances in the second half of the game. Excellent on court com‐
municaon from Jenny Cashmere, Jess Inder, and Aimee Plant added to a strong team dynamic and the girls used
their speed and skill to outplay their opposion.
Score: KWS 27 ‐ Robin Hood 23
KWS 4ths Vs HNC Lady Hawks
The beauful Winter's day had become quite chilly by 3:45 but the 4ths were commied to beginning strongly and
keeping the pressure on early. They did this with a 17‐2 opening quarter (that lasted for 23 minutes because the
buzzer didn't go off). A compensatory short quarter saw this lead go out to 25‐5. This week's training with the 3rds
helped the 4ths to play a high standard with controlled aacking play and a solid defensive effort across the whole
court. The final score was 44‐10, our third win for the season. Well done girls. Players' player was a three‐way e
shared by Millie Inder (GD), Georgia Opie (WD) and Sophie Bannister‐Tyrrell (GS).
KWS 5ths Vs OHS Rambuncous Yahoos
The KWS 5 th had a spectacular game on the weekend against OHS Rambuncous Yahoos winning 32 ‐ 27. The girls
started off the game on fine form; this was due to their great team work. Sophie Hardie and Nicola Harvey’s
shoong was exceponal throughout the enre game, as was Karli Maloney and Erin Smiths defence. The nerves
kicked in at ¾ me when we were only up by one point, but they all managed to calm their nerves and they finally
came out on top, well done to all on a nail bing game.
KWS X Factor vs HNC Hawkees
Aer a horrendous first quarter in which we conceded 11 goals to one, the team clawed back to match the
Hawkees’ scoring in the last three quarters. Nevertheless, we lost the game 17‐32.
The team, aer their 15 minutes’ “warm‐up”, played really entertaining, fast netball and this bodes well for the end
of the season. Always fighters, the team should be proud of their efforts to get back into the game.
KWS 14AS vs Cyms Zanussi
On Saturday, the first game for the start of the term the girls of the 14A's were very fired up for a game! Everyone
played outstanding well with enthusiasm every quarter, pass and drive. Special menons to Emily Shields, Annabel
Sheehan and Georgia Booth, who worked hard to keep the team movated at all mes. Although a loss, we were all
very happy with the ending result. Can't wait for next games. Good luck iguanas, keep up the great work.
Score: KWS 8 ‐ Cyms 34
KWS 14Bs vs Hawkes
The game was the best the girls have played all season. We were 6 all at quarter me. Anna Price and Caitlin Bell
worked the goal area well, driving to the post and shoong accurately. Myra Lim‐Hurt, Eliza Gilbank‐Heim , Emma
Haege and Molly Plant worked well as a group in the centre third. The girls channelled the ball superbly and used
the court space carefully. Pesi Faiva, Olivia Wass and Rhoslyn Carney took many intercepts in the opposing goal ar‐
ea and were able to feed the ball back down the court to gain a large number of turnovers. This must be considered
the Team of the week for showing such improvement in game play over the season so far.
Rowing Preparaons for Next Season
Sunday morning rowing
Regular Sunday morning rowing available for all members of the rowing team will commence on Sunday 29 th July.
Buses for these sessions will normally depart at 7 am from the Wolaroi site. Those who wish to row on the follow‐
ing Sunday must nofy the rowing master by e‐mail no later than 8 pm the preceding Wednesday evening, at
rholmes@kws.nsw.edu.au . Noficaon of the arrangements for the Sunday will be replied to by e‐mail by the fol‐
lowing Thursday evening. There may be more than one session depending upon numbers and boat allocaons. It is
important that this process is followed carefully as the allocaon of equipment can be quite inflexible if numbers
are high. Failure to nofy in advance will mean you will not be able to row on the morning, and failure to nofy of
inability to aend aer booking may have the same consequences. Dress for all sessions is proper rowing uniform.
Rowing Room
The rowing room will be open at lunch mes beginning Monday 6 August mainly for new rowers to learn technique
but also for connuing rowers to start preparing for the season. Other pre‐season sessions for connuing rowers
will be provided by arrangement with the coaches.
Rowing Selecon Trials
On Saturday 1 st September, the selecon trials for all beginning rowers (those who have not rowed before irrespec‐
ve of age) will be conducted in the morning between 9 am and 1 pm at the school gymnasium. All prospecve
rowers need to aend. The trials will take approximately one hour to complete.
Selecons will then be finalised for the team for this season which will commence with a 3 day rowing camp at Pen‐
rith from the 29 th September to the 1 st October during the coming holidays.
Those who wish to connue rowing need to have completed an ergometer test at the qualifying standard for their
age group on or before Saturday 15 September in order to qualify for one of the holiday camps. The rowing room
will be staffed from 9 am to 12 noon for tesng on Saturday 15 September. Any who do not complete such tests
will not be selected for the rowing team! Those at beginner standard, needing intensive skill development, will be
aending the camp from the 29 th September to the 1 st October, the remainder will aend a three‐day camp in Or‐
ange from the 2 nd to the 4 th of October.
All rowers must aend a camp during the holidays as designated by the staff. A note with detailed organisaon will
be distributed once selecons are finalised.
