Learning Enrichment and SupportScience Faculty 2012Dear ParentsThe Science department will run an enrichment programme again this year for junior and senior students. All members of the Science staff will assist with the programme throughout the year. Mrs Astrid Lepelaar isnow a full time teacher in Learning Support. She will continue to work with students and staff, developingindividual and class programmes to enhance Science literacy across all year groups.Junior Science Enrichment ProgrammeIt is anticipated that for the top class in each year, we will compact the curriculum and have selectedstudents working on extension projects and topics. There will be at least one extension activity persemester according to the grid below. Some of the programmes will be running in parallel and some will be“stand alone” topics.Year Semester 1 ActivitySemester 2 ActivityGroup7 Sleek Geek Video Competition (May) Murder Under the Microscope (August)8 Sleek Geek Video Competition (May) Murder Under the Microscope (August)First-hand investigation- BHP Billiton ScienceAwards9 Forensic Science incursion (February) Science and Engineering Challenge10 Brain Bee Challenge (March)First-hand investigation- BHP Billiton ScienceAwards(September)Science and Engineering Challenge(September) Genetics-Ethics in Science/Jeansfor GenesIdentification of students for ScienceOlympiadsIn addition to these programmes, students will participate in the National Chemistry Quiz ($5.06) (26 thJuly) and the UNSW Science competition ($7.70)(6 th June). There will also be an opportunity for a group of secondary students to make a short film to be enteredinto the Eureka Sleek Geeks Short film competition (entries close 6 th May). Sleek Geek video preparationtime will be various Monday/Wednesday afternoons 3.30-5.00 in room 64, to be arranged with the group.Music and cadet commitments are to be met as a priority.Senior Sciences Enrichment ProgrammeThe essential philosophy behind the senior Science enrichment is to empower the students to strive forexcellence in senior Science. Whilst in classroom Science the emphasis is on learning the curriculum, theenrichment sessions will focus on maximising HSC marks in exams. We want to encourage the students towork as a team and help each other to gain the best possible marks in the HSC exam. There is an extracurricularopportunity for senior Chemistry students to participate in the National Titration Competition.Preliminary programme (Year 11):Skills programme:A programme will be run to enhance senior Science students’ skills in Biology, Chemistry, EES and Physics.Emphasis will be in developing skills in first-hand and secondary-source investigations, such asunderstanding the scientific method and drawing and graphing.Science Olympiads:Students have the opportunity to study and sit for the Biology, Physics and Chemistry Olympiad exams tobe held in August. Students have access to the text books from the library and some have already madesome progress over the holiday period.HSC programme (Year 12):HSC “Reaching your Potential” seminars: There will be a series of enrichment seminars in Terms 1, 2 and 3for students undertaking the Senior Science courses. They will take place on weekday evenings. There willbe four sessions per subject. Specific dates and times are attached on the following page. These sessionswill involve revision of difficult knowledge and concepts in each topic. There will be an emphasis on how toanswer HSC questions and maximise marks in the longer-response questions. For best results, the studentsshould revise the specific topic before attending each seminar. Boarders should remember to arrange a latemeal on the specific dates.

In addition, there will be a STANSW “Meet the Markers’ HSC Study day in Term 3 (12 th August). Thissession will involve HSC markers visiting the school and spending a day with the senior Science studentsfrom KWS and other schools in the district to discuss the HSC exams, how to write answers, maximisemarks and how to avoid common problems. There will also be the opportunity for students to sit another trial paper in exam conditions in Term 3.In addition, during the study vacation in September, senior Science teachers will send out a “Question-ofthe-Day”to all HSC Chemistry and Biology students via email. Replies will be marked and feedback given. We ask that you encourage your son/daughter to participate in the enrichment seminars and question-ofthe-day.Evidence shows that students participating in the seminars and Question-of-the-day programmeperformed better than students who did not participate. Indeed, over the last few years the senior Scienceresults have been very encouraging and among the best in the state. If you have any questions regarding the programme please contact me on 63920321 or emailclitchfield@kws.nsw.edu.auYours faithfully,Catherine LitchfieldDates for the diary:Mrs Litchfield is available Wednesday lunch times in room 61 for ‘drop in’ senior Biology andChemistry students. Music MattersHarmony Day – Performance on Sunday 18 MarchThe Orange City Council ran a Harmony Day Ceremony and Fair in the Orange Art GalleryForecourt on Sunday. Our Stage Band and Chamber Choir both performed during the ceremonyand were received very well. It is always challenging for a choir to sing outside as so much of thesound is lost. However, they sounded excellent and “La Paradisi” had particularly good energy. StageBand presented “Come Away With Me” by Nora Jones and “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” byThe Police. Jack Brand performed the vocal solo for the Norah Jones piece on Tenor Saxophone withwonderful musicality and a gorgeous sound. In fact, the saxophone section sounded particularly good ingeneral! Thank you to all the performers and their parents who were incredibly patient considering thedelays in performance times. Thank you very much to Mr Alloway for moving equipment to and fromschool for the day and his direction of Stage Band and to Ms Anthony for her direction of Chamber Choir andhelp on the day. It was really worthwhile to represent our school at an event focused on community.Anzac Day – Marching Band to participateAny student in Symphonic Wind Ensemble is in the KWS Marching Band. Rachelpitched in the last innings to contain the other team, and later scored the winning run to win the game 10-9.Rachel was awarded “junior Coach of The Year” a commendable achievement.BasketballKWS 1sts GirlsLast night, we played an awesome game ofbasketball. We were successful in the finalsagainst the Sliders who, at the commencementof the season, convincingly defeated us. Thisshows how far we have come as a team in thelast 6 months. We were able to outrun the oppositionwith our impressive fitness which proved to be a hugeadvantage for us throughout the entire game.Stand outs for the game were Little Sarah who wasnothing but consistent and fierce spirited which won hercountless rebounds, regardless of the fact that she wasfar from being the tallest player on the court.Pip had a strong game, especially defensively, clocking up4 well-earned fouls that displayed great dedication toboth the game and her team.Katie had good spacing during the game managing topost up in the centre of the key, despite the intimidatingsize of the older opposition.Big Sarah, as always, displayed great skill and flexibilityunder the basket when she went for numerous lay-upsand managed to get around the defences quick handsand wide diameters to score points.Megan, like Sarah, had a few good lay-ups where she puther head down and just went for it, even though therewas a high chance of her enduring much pain because ofit. Her enthusiasm last night was infectious.Nikki showed us all her agility and speed on defence asshe stepped up played smart and effectively. Hermovement on offence opened up the key andprovided opportunities for the whole team.Great job girls on a good game! Good luck nextweek as we head on into the grand finals againstthe Rugels. In addition, last Thursday, 5 of the girls including Pip,Big and Little Sarah, and Nikki travelled up toWollongong to play in the WAS team. We played 5challenging games throughout the day and managed toprogress into the grand finals, where we lost by only 3points. The competition was a lot more physical in thecity, but we all rose to the challenge and played beyondthe expectations of most. Special mention goes to NikkiCollins and Mikaela Cato for making the AICES team andSarah Burns who is listed as the shadow player.KWS 1 st BoysOn Monday night the first boys played what would betheir last game to the 2011-12 season against theRenegades. The boys played well and welcomed DylanPrince back to the team after a long break due to injury. From the start the boys were behind but were able tokeep the gap close not allowing victory to get out ofreach. However in the final quarter the Renegadesproved too good and shot ahead winning 67 to 51.Despite the unexpected loss all the boys gave their besteffort and should be proud of the excellent seasonbehind us. Thankyou to all the boys and Coach Curranfor an excellent season.

Tom Harbison 62 then came to the creaseand played a real captains innings to see the scoremove to 166. Tom was well supported by MaxDodds 15 and Damian Hill 12. When KWS weredismissed in the 48 over the score stood at 202 andcoach Mark Gardner was pretty happy. After lunch JackRogers 2-15 took the new ball and in his first over behad broken the stumps of two of the top order fromMacquarie College. After one good partnership thattook the score to 48 Gus Griffiths leg spin got the vitalbreakthrough and opposition batting collapsed withaccurate KWS bowling. Damian Hill 2-6 and TomBristow 3-7 both had hat-trick opportunites. TomHarbison also bowled well to have2-3 off his single over.KWS will now play the winner of Riverina AnglicanCollege and William Clarke College semi-final. The dateof the final is yet to be fixed.KWS 1 st XI v Orange City KWS was playing for aplace in the semi-final after washouts had robbed theside of a potential chance at taking top spot in the RoyalHotel Day night final. The washout against CYMS meantthey stayed in touch with KWS in the race for 4 TH spotin the finals. To be sure of retaining 4 th place KWS hadto defeat City in rain shortened 40 over match atRiawena. City batted on a good wicket and posted a bigtotal of 5-238 off 40 overs. Some big hitting put the boysunder pressure and the a couple of missed chances sawthe runs flow freely. KWS set about the chase. KaneGardner 38 and Charles Litchfield 47 really batted wellbefore a run-out brought the partnership to an end.Louis Kostaglou 49 who batted beautifully joined Charlesand the boys continued to score freely. With thedismissal of Charles KWS lost three quick wicketsbefore Andrew Litchfield 48 took the attack to City. Alast wicket partnership between Andrew and ChrisGavin saw KWS fall only 11 runs short of the City total. This was an excellent chase and the boys battingsuggests KWS has bright future. Unfortunately the othergame where CYMS were playing Cavaliers resulted in anunexpected upset which meant CYMS leapfrogged KWSand moved into the semi-finals. Coach Mark Gardnerand he boys were disappointed with the outcome butthey should be very pleased with their season in ODCAMen’s competition. The team now turns its attention tothe schoolboy arena with the semi-final againstMacquarie College the next hurdle in the teams bid toretain the Douglas Shield.15’s Semi Final – KWS v Molong The KWS 15’splayed some good cricket to account for Molong in thesecond Semi Final of the 15’s competition on Saturday.Molong needed 176 to win on first innings but weredismissed for 100. This was thanks to a disciplinedbowling and fielding performance from the KWS team.Leading performer with the ball was the captain, PeterCrisp (4 for 16 from 7 overs) but he was well supportedby John Atkins (2 for 10 from 5 overs), Angus Gilmore(1 for 13 from 6 overs) and Cameron Williams (1 for 11from 3 overs).

Thanks again to all the parents for theirassistance and support on Saturday - it wasmuch appreciated. This win sets up a showdown in the final ofthe ODJCA 15’s competition between thetwo KWS 15’s teams. I know that everyone involved in15’s cricket at KWS is looking forward to what promisesto be an exciting game.Clarkes v Orange City The Clarkes once againsteamrolled another helpless team who could not haveimagined the onslaught coming there way. RowanWilson opened the batting with a superb 38. Otherimpressive scores came from Sam Nicholls (21) andCharles Litchfield (81). A good all round battingperformance brought us up to a very respectable total of217 after the first day. On the second day the brillianceof the Clarkes showed through, after Tommy Rogerssensationally took two wickets in the first over of theday and ended up on 2/8. This was a good sign of thingsto come. City could not handle the swing andunpredictability that came from the stunning Sam Green(2/3) and a sensational spell from spinner supremeRowan Wilson who took 3/18. Individual wickets camefrom Charles Litchfield and Sam Nicholls. Specialmention must go to Steven Dodd who fielded likea lion and let nothing go past him. Another verypromising moment was Clarry Pratten whoremoved there big scored with a very good catchand made his return from injury even better whenhe scored 19 in our very brief second innings. Overall asensational team performance. I must finally thank all theparents who have helped us out up to this point in theseason, especially to Mr Dodds and Mr Olson withoutwhom this season would not have gone as smoothly. The whole team is now looking forward to facing theother Kinross team in the final next Saturday in whatshould be a scintillating affair.KWS U14 def Cavaliers On the second day of thisSemi Final the KWS boys completed their time battingand easily accounted for Cavaliers. The teams then went on to enjoy a modified short game, each having one hour’s batting and one hour in the field. It was a good opportunity for everyone to have a bowlwhile Alec Patfield showed his fielding skills to take thecatch of the season.Good luck for the Final.Rugby ClubInvites you to attend the2012 Rugby Season LaunchFriday 23 th March 20125:00 pm – 10’s Rugby match on Ex-Students Field between the senior boys6:00 pm – KWS Rugby Club AGM in The Anderson Centre.6:30 pm – BBQ dinner at the DPA - $20 per person7:00 pm – Launch of the 2012 KWS Rugby Season andPresentation to the 2012 KWS Open’s Squad in the DPA.8:00 pm – Parkview Hotel for Parents who wish to continue the eveningDress: Smart CasualAll boys to wear School UniformRSVP: Friday 16 th March, 2012 to Mrs Sally Rattray-WoodPhone: 6392 0325 Fax: 6392 0381Email: srattray@kws.nsw.edu.auOr return the following to the schoolI would like to attend the 2012 Rugby Season Launch @ $20 per personPlayer’s Name(s)……………………………………………….....................................................Parents Name(s)…………………………………………………………………………….No. of persons attending:………………Payment by: Credit Card / Cheque / Cash on bookingThe launch is a great opportunity for you to meet the coaches of your son’s team andother parents of players.
