Then came some fantastic games of netball. Our very first KWS Netball Presentation Dinner capped off a great day andwas a fitting culmination for the 2009 season. The girls dressed up, the buffetdinner was delicious, parents continued great friendships formed on thesideline and well-deserved awards were presented. Some great suggestionswere put forward to make next year’s dinner even bigger and better.Netball –Grand FinalsA great day for KWS Netball! Four great wins with three hard fought battles. All girls played with determination and a competitive but fair spirit – you haveall done yourselves, your team and your school proud. Well done!!!A big thank you to the coaches and supporters – your support and guidancewere awesome – both on the day and throughout the season!Senior CompetitionDivision 2 Blue Premiers - KWS 2nds defeatedSheehan Woodies - 40 to 24On Saturday afternoon the KWS 2ndstook on the Sheehan Woodies in theDivision 2 Blue Grand Final. With previousmatches going 2 to 1 in our favour wewere hopeful of a victory, but knew itwould be a close fight. The first quartersaw some of the best Netball we hadplayed all year and we took and eight goallead into the first break. The Woodies foughtback in the second quarter and the game wasevenly poised at the big break. However, thegirls fought back and played together as a team, relying on each other, to take a lead into thefinal quarter. With everything on the line thegirls gave it everything they had to pulloff a 16 goal victory in the end. It waseasily the best game of Netball weplayed all season, with the highlightbeing the great team work and thewonderful support we had on thesideline. Congratulations especially to ourteam captain and only Year 12, BrionyCampbell. GIrls, it has been a great pleasure tocoach you this year - what a wonderful season.KWS Tiggers v JS Skittles Won

Junior CompetitionKWS 13As v Sheahan 13s – Lost 19-25A nervous start allowed the unbeaten Sheahan 13sto take an early lead, but the 13As kept their headsand produced solid play to get back in the game bythe end of the first quarter. The second quarter saw the team more settled.Olivia Rowlands was always in the right place at theright time, taking a spectacular intercept andproviding excellent support through the centrecourt. Sophie Hardie worked the goal circle to ouradvantage and followed through with accurateshooting. In the third quarter we controlled play veryeffectively to outscore the opposition for the firsttime in the game. Prue Eccleston moved into GSand combined brilliantly with Nikki Collins in ourKWS 14As v Sheahan 14s LostThe girls all had awesome games. Sheahanwere always going to be hard to topple butthe 14As definitely gave it their best shot.Torrid defence by Lucy Taylor and AnnabelleCarter made Sheahan work very hard forpossession and points. Ellie Fisher and KarliMaloney were great links between ourdefence and attack, always defending tightlyand looking for opportunities to turnpossession around. Our attacking end wascrisp and solid with Alanna Condon andMandy Colless working hard to bring the ballthrough the centre third into our shooters. ArabellaJorgensen-Hull and Rachel Gentles both had goodgames at the ring. Rebekah Kwa, supporting fromthe sideline helped the girls end their season on ahigh. Many thanks to the parents who encouragedand supported the girls throughout the season.KWS 14Bs v Sheahan Phaemis LostKWS 15A v James Sheahan15A WON 33 - 18The 15A girls were on fire from the moment they hitthe court. The first goals went to KWS and set thetone for the match. Tegan Selmes and Lilian Simsplayed the circle well, taking both long and closeshots at goal with their usual accuracy. JesArchibald fed the ball into the circle with speed andbroke fast on the centre passes. Throughout thematch Annelise Corey maintained an open centreand tight defence, intercepting many opposingpasses. Emma Johnson in Centre for the secondhalf played a thinking game and looked for theopenings, passing with control and defending withaggression. Bridget Bennett was fantastic both asWing Defence and Goal Keeper and maintainedcontact with the opposition, intercepting manypasses and holding back the opposition from theirgoal circle. At the other end of the court MaddyHawthorne and Ellie Haege worked tirelessly indefence to limit Sheahan’s opportunities.Consistent smart play and good use of the court byEmma Rutherford, Taylor Green and Emma Rogerssaw us close the gap and go into the final quarter 3down.In the fourth quarter the pressure started to show. With both teams making unforced errors the ballsee-sawed from one end of the court to the other. The final whistle saw Sheahan take out the game25-19.The 13As can all be proud of their contribution, team spirit and sportsmanship throughout theentire 2009 season.Congratulations to the still unbeaten Sheahan 13s,who were too good on the day. Look out next year.circle. Alice Collins-Gallagher and Mikaela Catoworked well together in defence making itnearly impossible for the opposition to get aclear shot. Their ballet-like jumps andlong reach meant we had many turnoversin the second half of the game. Themiddle and last quarters with AllyDavidson shooting and Lilian Sims as GAshowed the team at its best. Centrepasses from Emma to Tegan or Jes andover to Ally and Lilian and straight into thegoal from amazing distances werespectacular. Alice, Mikeaela, Bridget and Annelisewere able to send many of the opposition centrepasses to our girls and this meant that the terrificscore reflected the talent of the team. Many thanksto the cheer squad of parents and friends we saweach week.KWS 15Bs v Oriels Grand Final Win 25-24In the most exciting and heart wrenching game ofthe season KWS 15B’s just ‘got over the line’ to winby 1 point in the final seconds. The score was tightthe whole match, with both sides leading by onlyone or two points at various times. All KWS 15Bplayers had run hard. By the end of the thirdquarter a 2 goal margin had been established, withKWS working very hard for this lead. The team wasexcited at ¾ time but were told that they still hadmuch to do. This proved correct with OHS Orielscoming out at the start of the final quarter and puton 5 unanswered goals. KWS 15B’s had beaten thisteam all year but were ‘looking down the barrel’when it counted most. To the girls credit they liftedand managed to score several goals, eventuallytaking the match in the final seconds. Well done toall the girls – a great season.

KWS 1 v Canobolas won 2-1A very physical match from the start. Despite thephysical presence of the opposition KWS mmangedto hold their own and play a controlling style ofhockey. Excellent hassle up front from SarahCrombie, Rosie McClymont and MareeGrimmett was rewarded when SarahDwyer found herself in front of an opengoal. This had KWS leading 1-0. Numerousopportunities were created fromdetermined play and excellent tackling by LizMeys, Kayla Orrock, Nyssa Iffland and OliviaHordynsky, unfortunately KWS was unable tocapitalize on this. After half-time KWS started alittle slow and had themselves under pressure.Cabnobolas took advantage of this and leveledthe score at 1-1. This match was like a boxingmatch that was going with neither opponent willngto back down and every playing putting their bodyon the line. KWS worked a fantastic short cornerthat resulted in a penalty stroke. Kayla Orrock hadno trouble converting this and landing what wasthe killer blow on our Canobolas’s season. Welldone and congratulations on qualifying for theGrand Final this weekend. All supporters welcome.Final: KWS 2 v Cyms lost 6-1A disappointing end to an otherwise positiveseason. Despite some good scoring chances, wewere unable to convert our opportunities and wewere beaten by a more determined and aggressiveteam. Some good passages of team play wereevident, but inconsistency and poor teamwork letus down in the end. Georgia Sloane was the goalscorer, and was well supported by Claire Alexanderand Georgia Andrews in attack. Georgie Quigleyshowed positional versatility by playing in the halfline when needed. Mel Thomas marked the Cymsattacking players very well, but at times she wasoutnumbered. Kate Mortimer showed strength, particularly in the second half, making somedetermined tackles under pressure. Jessica Davistried hard in goal but poor marking by teammatesleft her stranded too many times. Kate Wilsonworked hard and ran all over the field while EmilyWilson tried her best to attack from left half. SallyMildner again made some great saves, particularlyin the defensive circle. Michelle Crayford showedsome good vision in attack and she both attackedthe circle and distributed the ball well. Both Sallyand Michelle Crayford were under-utilized in attackand starved of opportunities with the ball. LucyHarris again showed speed in attack and wasHockeyunlucky not to score a couple of goals. The futurelooks bright for KWS in 2010 if these players canbuild on what they have achieved this season.KWS U15 Green (2) v Cyms (0)This game was what Grand Final Hockey is all about- two determined teams showing all their skilland ability with the added pressure of being aGrand Final watched by a large and vocalcrowd. Both KWS and Cyms suffered from someGrand Final nerves but they settleddown after the first few minutes ofthe game commencing play. Wewitnessed some great hockey which keptthe crowd enthralled. KWS played a verystrong marking game which saw somefrustration creep into the Cyms camp, the girlsmarking was a credit to them and they brokeCyms rhythm by not allowing them to carry the ballor finish set moves. KWS kept the pressure on andwhere justly rewarded by a Lucy Harris goal to putthem in front 1-0 at half time. The forward linewhere extremely hungry in the circle and cameclose several times. Our forward line never let upand our rolling substitutions saw all the girls have awell deserved breather and drink before continuingtheir hard work. Our forward line of Steph Dwyer,Alice Haigh, Ash Thompson, Lucy Harris, Leisl Gray,Georgie Hazelton, Holly Gavin and RosieMcClymont played some great team hockey, trusting and supporting one another the wholegame and helping our defense with breaking downthe play. Ellen Smart played goalie in the first halfand saved some great shots on goal and wasstrongly supported by her defensive teammates ofRiana Finn, Skye Haigh, Georgie Mutton, EbonyPress and Kate Wilson. Our defensive short cornerswhere calm and controlled and frustrated the Cymsattack by not giving them the opportunity topenetrate our goal. The second half saw KWS continue to dominate indefence with Alice Haigh taking on the goalieposition and showing no mercy in clearing the ballback to her forwards.
