Business Matters
The Summer of 2012 is officially coming to an end, and we will soon be entering the final quarter of the
year. Even though the year will be over before we know it, the Chamber still has many outstanding
programs and events planned. These programs are designed to provide you with networking and
educational opportunities that will strengthen your business. I encourage you to take a look at the
calendar of events and plan to participate in these great activities.
The 22nd year of the Leadership Berkeley program will begin on September 18, 2012. This year’s class is
listed on page 15. We appreciate the hard work of the Leadership Berkeley Committee, under the
leadership of Rick Manning (United Bank), for their great work in making this a top-notch program.

One of my favorite events, the Tailgating Under the Stars Auction, is almost here and will be held on Friday, September 21,
2012. We’ve already received some really fabulous auction items – WVU football game tickets, Washington Wizards tickets,
Chick-fil-A for a year, a vacation in the Outer Banks, bicycles, jewelry, just to name a few, but we need more items. Please
consider donating an item for the silent auction. Tickets are now on sale for $50 each or $450 for 10 tickets. A portion of the
proceeds from the Auction goes to the United Way of the Eastern Panhandle. The Tailgating Under the Stars Auction wouldn’t
be possible without the generosity of our sponsors--My Bank! First United Bank & Trust, Bowles Rice McDavid

The Women’s Network program continues to be a success. We thank Mary Hayward for her leadership of the Women’s
Network Committee and look forward to the future as Mary turns over the committee to Pam Neely (State Farm Insurance).
Both of these ladies, along with the other Committee members and staff, have been instrumental in building this great
program sponsored by WVU Hospitals-East, Blue Ridge Community and Technical College, Diehl Law, and Platinum PR.
It’s not too early to start planning for the 86 th Annual Dinner, which will be held on Wednesday, November 7, at the Holiday
Inn. This is our opportunity to celebrate the many successes of the year and to recognize outstanding businesses and
exceptional people in the community. Nominations are currently being accepted for Small and Large Business of the Year
awards. Criteria for nominating a business can be found here. Invitations will be in your mailboxes soon. Mark your
calendars now and reserve your tickets. This event sells out every year.
