The Potomac Edison Company – Your Provider of Reliable
Electric Service in the Eastern Panhandle
Electricity is the lifeblood of modern day living and
commerce. The Potomac Edison Company takes very
seriously its mission to provide safe, reliable electric
service to our 132,000 customers in West Virginia’s
Eastern Panhandle, including 51,000 customers in
Berkeley County. Whether it is connecting a new resident
or business, upgrading and maintaining the region’s
electrical infrastructure, or restoring power after damaging
storms such as the June 29 Derecho, the men and women
of Potomac Edison stand squarely in your corner. Potomac
Edison employs more than 500 people to serve its West
Virginia and Maryland customers, with about 60
employees based at the Martinsburg Service Center.
Some people may remember us as Allegheny Power. But that name changed after Allegheny Energy merged with
FirstEnergy Corp. of Akron, Ohio in 2011, and FirstEnergy promptly restored the traditional utility name of
Potomac Edison. Our local utility management team is focused on making decisions that benefit our customers and
communities, and we operate by a philosophy that “the greater good is better business.” This testament underlies
our contributions to community organizations and investments in the local economy. Potomac Edison’s
Martinsburg-based employees contributed more than $2,500 and 500 pounds of food to Harvest for Hunger in 2011
and 2012, benefitting the Loaves & Fishes food bank of the Cooperative Community Action Project. Similarly,
employees and the FirstEnergy Foundation donated more than $10,000 to the United Way of the Eastern
Panhandle in 2011.
We take an active role in promoting the communities we serve to new and existing businesses. Businesses seeking
sites can use FirstProspector, a program that finds and analyzes potential sites for new commercial and industrial
construction, including existing available space. Potomac
Edison worked closely with Macy’s and the Berkeley
County Development Authority to extend electric service to
Macy’s new distribution center. We also support regional
efforts to attract data center operators to the Eastern
Panhandle to take advantage of an ample supply of lowcost,
reliable electricity.
