MEET THE NEW MATTHEW DULDIG 

There was no metaphoric line 

drawn in the sand, nor was 

there a barefaced ultimatum 

delivered, but Glenelg forward 

Matthew Duldig certainly saw 

the writing on the wall. 

Languishing in the Reserves 

for much of last season, 

Duldig knew he had to raise 

his fitness level if he wanted 

to taste further, consistent 

League action. 

“I knew that (fitness) was 

why I wasn’t getting a game,” 

Duldig recalled of his 

frustrating 2007 campaign, 

two-thirds of which he spent 

in the seconds. 

“I had to do a lot of fitness 

stuff. 

“There were a number of key 

areas (coach) Mark (Mickan) 

wanted me to work on and 

that’s what it came down to. 

“It wasn’t an ultimatum from 

him or anything like that, but I 

realised if I don’t get that right 

I won’t play senior footy. 

“It’s something I still need to 

keep working on.” 

After starting last year in the 

League side, a couple of quiet 

games saw Duldig quickly 

become a long-term casualty of 

the Tigers’ poor start to 2007. 

Relegated to the Reserves, 

where he spent 13 straight 

matches, Duldig finally cracked 

a recall to Mickan’s line-up at 

the business end as Glenelg 

made its late finals charge. 

“It was definitely frustrating,” 

Duldig said of his extended 

spell in the ‘Magoos’. 

“It’s especially frustrating 

when the boys were losing 

and I thought I had a bit to 

add to the side. 

“In the end I just had to be 

patient and do my time in 

the Reserves.” 

Duldig did the hard-yards on 

the track and has maintained 

his commitment this year after 

working hard in the pre-season. 

The rejuvenated forward has 

spent almost all of this season 

in the high-flying Tigers’ League 

outfit as a vital cog in arguably 

the SANFL’s most feared, multipronged 

forward line. 

“It’s fantastic,” is how Duldig 

described being part of such 

a deep, well-oiled attacking 

unit comprising himself, 

spearhead Justin McConnell, 

off-season recruit Todd Grima, 

crumbing veteran Matty Bode, 

improving Ruory Kirkby and 

promising Crows-listed 

teenager James Sellar. 

“It’s something Glenelg has 

lacked over the last few years. 

“We’ve always relied on one 

or two guys previously, but 

now we’ve got lots of options. 

“It’s very enjoyable. We’re 

like a team within a team. 

“It’s great to get amongst it 

and it’s great when other blokes 

are kicking goals as well. 

“Toddy (Grima) takes the 

key post which is good for us. 

He came over with a lot of 

good raps. 

“Ruory had a breakout year 

last year and I usually get the 

second or third string defender. 

“There’s a tagger every week 

for one of us which always 

frees someone up. 

“If I have a good game I 

might get tagged the next 

week, which gives someone 

else a chance to kick a few.” 

By the half-way point of this 

season, Duldig, who works as 

a Junior Development Officer 

for the Adelaide Football Club, 

had already overhauled his 

2007 League goals tally. 

Fitness aside, improved goalkicking 

accuracy has been an 

important factor. 

“That (kicking accurately for 

goal) is probably an area 

where I’ve let myself down in 

the past,” said Duldig, who 

went to school in his 

hometown Millicent with the 

likes of Glenelg team-mates 

Ty Allen, Luke Panozzo and 

skipper Ben Mules. 

“I’m sure it’s cost me a few 

games as well. 

“This year I’ve done a lot 

of work with my technique 

and routine. 

“I try to stick to the same 

routine every week. 

“If I get the five or six steps 

right, generally they go through. 

“I’ve done a fair bit of work 

with (former Glenelg champion 

Tigers’ forward Matthew Duldig. 

and ex-coach) Tony Symonds 

in getting all of that right. 

“I sought him out at the end 

of last year and it’s been 

working well.” 

Duldig clearly knows what it 

takes to improve himself and 

take his game to the next level.

TOUGH GUYS OF THE SANFL

The notion of ‘football 

toughness’ comes in 

many forms. 

If you look in a dictionary, 

among the general definitions 

of toughness you will find 

terms such as ‘not easily 

broken’, ‘durable’, ‘capable of 

great endurance’, ‘staunch’ 

and ‘steadfast’. 

What is recognised in a 

footballer to achieve this 

substantial accolade is a 

player’s ability to run in 

straight lines, not shirk a 

contested situation, or be 

pushed off the ball. 

Players also need to 

demonstrate they have a 

strong presence around the 

contest and the ability to win 

the hard ball, along with an 

uncompromising and fearless 

attack, and a willingness to 

remain focused on the football 

no matter what is coming at you. 

Another sign of toughness 

is the ability to play through 

injuries. 

During a famous South 

Australian win over Western 


Australia in the 1960s, Glenelg 

legend Harry Kernahan was 

reported to have been moved 

up to a forward pocket to 

help the Croweaters to an 

inspiring win, despite having 

a broken collarbone. 

Port’s Ivan Eckermann, 

playing with heavy strapping 

around his leg in the 1977 

Grand Final, returned to the 

ground and kicked three 

goals to help his side to 

victory in another case of 

intestinal fortitude etched 

in the annals of SANFL 

football history. 

While the history of South 

Australian football is rich in 

players who have displayed 

great physical courage with a 

fierce desire for the ball, we 

now take a club by club look 

at today’s SANFL players who 

are regarded as having the 

unique qualities of football 

toughness. 

Sturt 

Nicknamed ‘Madness’ and 

always punching above his 

height and weight range is Sturt 

defender Andrew Whiteman. 

Whiteman is relentless in his 

attack on the ball and body, 

but remains scrupulously fair. 

He is a highly respected, if a 

little unheralded, member of 

the SANFL football community. 

Co-captains Ben Nelson and 

2002 Magarey Medallist Jade 

Sheedy are also among the 

Double Blues’ personnel noted 

for their courage, commitment 

and determination. 

Recruit of the year in 2007, 

Luke Crane, is also highly 

credentialed in this area, as is 

veteran Simon Feast who has 

often demonstrated the ability 

to play through the pain 

barrier. Despite a myriad of 

ailments, Feast, now 33, 

continues to be a stoic 

performer for Sturt in ruck. 

Port 

A footballer who gets more 

attention than most in the 

SANFL is Magarey Medallist 

Jeremy Clayton. Diminutive in 

stature, (175cm and 76 kgs), 

Clayton persistently has a 

tagger alongside him, trying to 

curb his influence on the game. 

Despite the constant 

attention, Clayton is always 

putting his body over the ball 

and taking physical 

punishment, while still being 

among the competition’s top 

possession winners. 

Kristian De Pasquale also 

espouses all the requirements 

of a tough footballer in the 

SANFL, true to the tradition of 

the prison bar jumper. 

South 

From the West via Alberton, 

Craig Parry is currently one 

of the leading big men in 

the competition. At 194 

centimetres and 98 kilograms, 

Parry has the size for a 

physical presence on the 

ground and he’s as tough as 

nails, either in ruck or up 

forward for the Panthers. 

Josh Thewlis is another 

Panther considered amongst 

the toughest players in the 

competition.

Central 

Since they arrived from 

Victoria at the start of the 

decade, the Gowans brothers 

have been the epitome of 

hardness in their on-ball roles 

with the Bulldogs. 

Chris has collected two Jack 

Oatey medals for his 

performances on the ultimate 

day of the year, the SANFL 

Grand Finals in 2003 and 

2007, being the first person to 

achieve this honour twice. 

His twin, James, won the same 

award in Central District’s first 

victory back in 2000. 

The Gowans are noted for 

not taking a backward step, 

putting their bodies on the 

line and their fierce tackling, 

attributes which have played 

a key role in the Bulldog’s 

recent success. 

The heir-apparent at Central 

to take over from the Gowans 

as they head into the twilight 

of their careers is 21-year-old 

kamikaze kid, Scott Dutschke, 

who hails from Tanunda. 

Glenelg 

The first name that comes 

to mind when asking about 

the player who portrays the 

qualities of a tough man at 

the Bays is Vice Captain 

Adam Fisher. Coming across 

from the Melbourne Demons, 

Fisher is highly respected 

in local circles for his attack 

on the ball and his pluck 

in a contest. 

Pocket dynamo Ty Allen 

also displays attributes such 

as bravery, an unwavering 

commitment to attack the 

ball, and cavalier approach 

when putting his body on 

the line. 

West 

A true leader of men, 

Pinnaroo lad Nathan Brown 

inspires through his actions. 

Brown has all the desire and 

courage required of a 

footballer who wants to put 

his body on the line for his 

team. Starting his SANFL 

career with the Bloods, these 

characteristics have shined 

through his football, both 

when he was a defender at 

the Demons and now he is 

back at Broadspectrum Oval. 

North 

Although dogged with 

injuries for the last season 

and a half, North Adelaide 

captain Daryl Wintle shows 

tremendous leadership in this 

area. Wintle’s commitment for 

the contested ball and ability 

to put his body on the line is 

exactly what coaches ask for. 

Luke Ivens, running the lines 

from half-back, is another 

North player who never 

shirks a physical issue. 

Norwood 

Unflinching and courageous, 

football journeyman and 

Redlegs’ defender Brett Zorzi is 

a name which always comes to 

people’s lips when discussing 

the tough men of SANFL 

football. This key defender never 

gives in, is always ferocious 

when trying to win the 

contested ball, and is forever 

prepared to place his body on 

the line to either win the ball or 

find a path for a team-mate. 

Power-listed player Nick 

Lower is another Redleg who 

fits into this category, while 

veteran Heath Culpitt has 

always been prepared to 

make the physical 

commitment to the cause. 

Eagles 

Ever since Luke Powell 

arrived at the Eagles from 

Geelong, this Port Arlington 

lad has been at the bottom of 

the packs, winning the hard 

ball and dispatching it to his 

team-mates. Powell is 

frequently on the receiving 

end of opponent’s physical 

advances, but is only focused 

on the football and creating 

opportunities around him. 

Woodville–West Torrens’ 

best and fairest in 2007 and 

one of the form players this 

year, Leigh Treeby, is also 

one of the tough nuts of 

SANFL football.

CAPTAIN BLOOD AIDING WEST’S CAUSE 

They say you’re only as 

good as your last game. 

In the case of Nathan Brown, 

that adage could be extended 

to his last six games as an 

AFL footballer, all of which 

were of the highest calibre. 

Brown closed 2007 with 148 

disposals in his final halfdozen 

matches (average 24.7) 

as a Demon, amassing 20 or 

more on each occasion to cap 

off a superb individual season. 

Brown achieved a top 10 

finish in Melbourne’s bestand-fairest 

count. 

So it comes as no surprise 

to see Brown’s name listed 

prominently and regularly in 

the list of best players each 

week once again this year. 

But few would have expected 

him to be doing so in a West 

Adelaide jumper. 

Brown’s decision to retire 

from the AFL at the end of last 

season and return to the 

SANFL with the Bloods came 

as a shock to many, but the 

man himself has no regrets. 

“A new coach had come on 

board and I seriously thought 

my opportunities, turning 32 

this year, would be more 

limited,” Brown said when 

surmising the reasons for 

ending his AFL association 

after 146 games with the 

Demons (1998-2007). 

“I felt there was a changing 

of the guard scenario. 

“I could see it was going to 

be a rebuilding process and I 

was tossing up whether to 

retire for most of the last half 

of the year. 

“Mark Riley (Melbourne’s 

caretaker coach for the latter 

stages of 2007) wanted me 

(to stay). 

“When he didn’t get the (2008) 

job, I thought that’ll do me. 

“I still thought I could play, I 

just wanted to go out while I 

was still going alright. 

CAPTAIN BLOOD AIDING 

WEST’S CAUSE

“I thought it was a good 

time to go.” 

Born in Hastings, Victoria, 

Brown and his two older 

brothers played their junior 

footy wherever their father, 

who was in the Navy, was 

posted. 

That took the Browns to 

Pinaroo for a while before 

coming back to Adelaide 

where Brown joined West. 

The skilful, attacking 

defender won best-and-fairest 

awards for the Bloods at 

Under-19s (1995) and 

Reserves (1996) level, and 

finished third in the League 

best-and-fairest in 1997, 

which led to him being 

drafted by Melbourne. 

Returning to West this year 

after the best part of a decade 

away, Brown was handed the 

captaincy, albeit reluctantly. 

“I didn’t expect the captaincy 

and originally I didn’t want to 

be captain,” he said.

“I just wanted to play and 

contribute and get the last bit of 

footy out of my system before 

getting into the workforce. 

“The coach (Andrew Collins) 

was pretty adamant that he 

wanted me to lead the boys 

for at least a year until he got 

a good hold of the group. 

“It (captaincy) wasn’t laid out 

on the table as part of the deal 

or anything like that, but it is a 

great honour and I’m proud to 

be a part of developing our 

young list.” 

The chance to reunite with 

fellow leadership group 

member and long-time teammate 

Peter Walsh was another 

factor in Brown’s return. 

“That was a reason, to have 

a kick with an old mate,” said 

Brown, who with his wife 

Tamara has two children, 

Kynan, three, and Jake, one. 

“Walshy and I started at 

Westies together, we played 

together in Melbourne for a 

lot of years and we’ll get to 

finish together.” 

Brown, who works as a 

Development Officer with the 

SANFL, played most of his 

career under two of the AFL’s 

great contemporary captains 

in Garry Lyon and David Neitz. 

He feels uncomfortable 

being compared to them. 

“They’re at another level to 

me,” he laughs. 

“I’m a pretty cruisy bloke 

and I just try to help blokes as 

much as I can. 

“But they were a really big 

presence at the club. 

“I had a ball under the two of 

them and it was a great honour 

to play alongside them.” 

Just like his old AFL club, 

Brown’s Bloods are deep in 

rebuilding mode. 

If Brown’s team-mates can 

follow their skipper’s example, 

more prosperous times may 

be just around the corner at 

Broadspectrum Oval.

Adelaide Football Club 

has been named the Round 

14 Coca-Cola Star Search 

Award nominee. 

At just 19 and playing his 

12th League match, Fielke 

was a standout for West 

Adelaide in their weekend 

clash against Central District. 

Playing as a half forward 

and on the ball, Fielke chalked 

up 25 possessions and kicked 

Judged by members of the 

SANFL’s 200 Club on a 5-4-3- 

2-1 basis for every minor 

round match, the award carries 

with it a $3000 first prize. 

P.S. Three ‘Mystery Rounds’ 

have been allocated during 

the course of the year in 

which voting results will be 

kept secret until the end of 

the season. 

STAR SEARCH AWARD 

1.1 in West Adelaide’s defeat 

by the Bulldogs. Fielke’s 

consistent game, debilitating 

pressure on his opponents 

and ability to gain possession 

of the ball in West Adelaide’s 

forward line contributed to his

Making his League debut in 

Round 17 last year against

SAB COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS 

The 2008 SA Brewing and State Country 

Championships were held last weekend in the 

Riverland Towns of Berri and Barmera. Local Zone Team Murray 

Mallee Barrier Barossa (MMBB) won the event for the first time, 

defeating Central in the final by 50 points. 

The MMBB Zone comprises players from the Riverland, Mallee, 

Mid Murray, Broken Hill and Barossa Football Leagues. Mobile 

utility Todd Miles from Central won the player of the carnival award 

and the best U21 was won by strong MMBB forward Ryan Bennett. 

A squad of players was selected from the weekend to compete 

in the Australian Country Football Carnival in Shepparton 

Victoria, from the 24th to 27th July.

Jimmy or Jimbo from Jim’s Mowing. I think Mark Dragicevic 

came up with that a couple of years ago. 

As a boy I supported: 

The Cats (Geelong). 

My most memorable football moment is: 

Winning back-to-back flags with Calder Cannons in Under 

18s. We played at the MCG. 

I’d rather forget when: 

We have a big loss. 

I’m praised for: 

My Jimbo walk. 

I’m not so good at: 

Riding motorbikes. I think I’ve just stuffed my brother’s. 

The SANFL’s most exciting player is: 

Daniel Caire, when he’s on the go because of his pace and 

his rugby background. No one can catch him. 

The best thing about playing football is: 

Friendships with team-mates and winning. 

I play in the SANFL because: 

It’s the highest level I can play at the moment. 

The best advice given: 

It’s only a game. That’s what my old man always says. 

My perfect Saturday night is:
