Information Package on the degree programmes of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Maribor Part TWO Page 2 Over the next ten years the Faculty of Technical Sciences grew so much that it was split into four respective faculties (Mechanical and Textile Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Electrical Engineering) in 1995. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering continues its work as an already established Institution of Higher Education with intensive research and development activities, well linked to related institutions both domestically and abroad. Today (in study year 2004/2005) faculty of Mechanical Engineering has more than 1500 undergraduate students and more than 350 postgraduate students. Curses perform 123 academic staff with 110 research and administration employed staff. Organisation The Faculty has eight Chairs, seven Institutes and a separate Textile Department, see Figure 1. The Institutes are further divided into several well-equipped laboratories or working groups. Each Chair and Institute is chaired by a full professor, who is responsible for its operation and the required high level of academic and professional conduct of its members. 1 UNIVERSITY STUDY PROGRAMME 1.1 QUALIFICATION AWARDED The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering according to Slovenian law (ZSZN-1; Ur.l. Št. 61, 13.6.2006) offers the Mechanical Engineering diploma. The students who completed study programme and successful diploma defence obtain professional B.Sc. degree titled: 1.2 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Diploma Engineer of Mechanic (Dipl. Ing. Mech.) The professional-level study programmes are open to students: a) graduate with the so-called Matura final examination b) graduate with Matura final examination at any secondary school c) graduate with professional final examination at any secondary school d) graduated before June 1st 1995 at any secondary school programme If decision about limit of student's number is accepted, than the candidates would be selected by follow criteria: - general success at professional final examination or Matura final examination 60% points - general success at 3rd and 4th year of secondary school 40% points 1.3 EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL GOALS Basic goals of study programme The professional study program 1 st degree of Mechanical Engineering is aimed to develop specialistengineer for different work and tasks in companies, where the engineers are able to solved practical problems based on theoretical and practical solutions, procedures and methods. It is more stressed practical knowledge of engineer then analytical and theoretical solutions. However, the engineer get excellent over-view on Mechanical Engineering studies. Students have choice via credit points system to select own study program in order to continue his study in second level of high education to M. Sc. master study program. Information Package on the degree programmes of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Maribor Part TWO Page 3 General compentence of mechanical engineers of professional study programme Students of professional study program will be able to complete given task according to engineer's working standards. The B.Sc. engineers will obtain high knowledge, skillfulness and positive approach to engineer’s problems in industry. The mechanical engineers with broad professional knowledge can find employment in almost all branches of industry, R&D institutes, independent companies, design departments, as managers and members of administration, project engineers, experts in the army or government consultants, etc. The mechanical engineering graduates should have a sound practical application of engineering disciplines and are given an opportunity to specialize in one or more of these disciplines. The Faculty expects the graduates of the professional -level study programs of mechanical engineering to be creative, responsible and free individuals of our society, and supporters of progress in the profession. They must be capable of independently following the development of the profession from the available information sources and be able to transfer the gained knowledge to the engineering practice by development of new products, technologies and procedures related to their design, production and exploitation. A common objective is to produce an adaptable graduate who can solve any engineering problem with a systematic, organized, technically creative and innovative approach. Specific competence of professional mechanical engineers study program Many of the more specific competence lead out below are common to all study programs offered by the Faculty and they are: − to develop knowledge and understanding of engineering science, − to develop an understanding of engineering design and manufacturing, − to develop ability to apply practical knowledge to the solution of a wide range of engineering problems, − to develop analytical and computational skills, − to develop synthesis and evaluation skills, − to develop communication skills based on engineering drawing, visual representation, specification and report writing, − to develop a specialized knowledge in one of the six mechanical engineering disciplines offered, − to develop an understanding of engineering practice, − to develop an understanding of management and structure of the engineering and product manufacturing industry, − to develop an ability for both individual and team project work − to develop project leadership skills. The faculty staff are fully qualified and prepared to equip their students with all the necessary knowledge, training and modern aspects of engineering, during their studies. The staffs are open to new ideas and strive to provide their students with an insight into the latest research findings from at home and abroad.
