SWK 200. Human Behavior in the Social Environment. (3)<br />

Prerequisite: SWK 101<br />

The study of human development and change over the life span using a multidimensional theoretical framework:<br />

biophysical, psychological, and sociological. The students will learn how to use this framework to assess social<br />

functioning.<br />

Offered spring semester, odd-numbered years.<br />

SWK 495. Social Work Internship. (3)<br />

Prerequisites: SWK 101 and SWK 200.<br />

Supervised field experience in a social work agency or under the supervision of social workers.<br />

Intended for seniors in the Social Work Minor.<br />

Subject to regulations and restrictions on page 64.<br />

Sociology is the scientific study of human society, social forces, and social interaction. The curriculum and<br />

major requirements are designed so that students will:<br />

1) acquire an understanding of the field of sociology, including the sociological perspective,<br />

sociological concepts and theories, sociological research methods;<br />

(2) become informed citizens, with a critical understanding of social institutions, social and economic<br />

power and inequality, major social issues, the world around them;<br />

(3) develop critical and analytical skills and skills for effective communication;<br />

(4) acquire the basic preparation for careers in research, teaching, community service, social services,<br />

criminal justice, management, government, the law, and the ministry.<br />

The Sociology major prepares students for graduate work in sociology, social work, criminal justice or for<br />

graduate degrees in law or theology.<br />

Sociology Major (B.A. degree) Requirements (36-42 hours)<br />

Majors in Sociology are required to complete 33 hours in sociology plus Social Sciences 230 for a total of 36<br />

hours as follows:<br />

• 12 hours: Sociology 101, 208, 301, 302;<br />

• 6 hours: Two other Sociology courses at the 300-400 level;<br />

• 15 hours: Five other courses in Sociology;<br />

• 3 hours: Social Sciences 230.<br />

• 6 hours or the equivalent proficiency of a foreign language<br />

The sociology major also requires at least two semesters (6 hours) of a foreign language. This<br />

requirement can be met by demonstrating competency through placement tests or AP credit.<br />

Sociology Minor Requirements (18 hours)<br />

The Sociology minor requires 18 hours in Sociology: SOC 101, 208, and four Sociology electives.<br />
