change of major, is likely to delay graduation beyond the normal four years. Students are urged to seek the<br />

advice of the department chair in the discipline of interest early in the first year of enrollment.<br />

To declare a major, each student must obtain approval from the chairperson of the program of studies and<br />

file a completed, signed copy of the Degree Audit with the Office of the Registrar. At that point, the major<br />

chairperson, or an appointed representative, becomes the student‘s advisor for the remainder of the course of<br />

study. After this formal declaration, any change requires the approval of the major chairperson.<br />

DECLARING A MINOR<br />

To declare a minor, each student must obtain approval from the chairperson of the program of studies<br />

and file a ―Minor Form‖ with the Registrar.<br />

PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS<br />

To be eligible for promotion, a student must have earned the following minimum number of hours for<br />

each class:<br />

Sophomore — Twenty-four (24) semester hours<br />

Junior — Fifty-six (56) semester hours<br />

Senior — Ninety-two (92) semester hours<br />

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS<br />

To qualify for graduation from <strong>Newberry</strong> <strong>College</strong>, a student must do the following:<br />

1. Successfully complete a minimum of 126 semester hours with at least a minimum grade-point average<br />

of 2.0 on degree credit hours attempted at <strong>Newberry</strong> <strong>College</strong>;<br />

2. Complete the Core Curriculum, pages 73-74;<br />

3. Complete all requirements for a major;<br />

4. Attend the required number of Fine Arts and Lectures (FAL) events, page 51;<br />

5. Complete all Communication Across the Curriculum Program (CACP) requirements before being<br />

certified for graduation.<br />

A minimum grade point average of 2.0 must also be maintained on work performed in the major<br />

field and in the minor field.<br />

A minimum of twenty-one (21) semester hours for junior college transfer students and twelve hours for<br />

senior college transfer students in the major and eight hours in the minor must be completed at <strong>Newberry</strong><br />

<strong>College</strong>. Students must complete the last thirty-two (32) hours at <strong>Newberry</strong> <strong>College</strong>. Any and all academic<br />

appeals related to these requirements must be directed to Faculty Council via correspondence with the<br />

<strong>College</strong> Registrar or to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs.<br />

Some programs require certification through a state or national board. These programs may require<br />

additional course work and/or other scholastic achievement for certification. These programs include teacher<br />

certification.<br />

If Core or general requirements for graduation are changed during a student’s continuous<br />

enrollment at <strong>Newberry</strong> <strong>College</strong>, the student has the option of following either the requirements listed<br />

in the catalog that was in effect at the time of that student’s original enrollment, or those requirements<br />

in effect in the revised catalog.<br />

If requirements in the student’s major field are changed after a Degree Audit has been filed in the<br />

Office of the Registrar, the student has the option of following either the requirements in effect at the<br />

time of declaring the major or the requirements in effect in the revised catalog. In the latter event, a<br />

new Degree Audit form will have to be filed.<br />

RESIDENCE REQUIREMENTS FOR A DEGREE<br />

To receive a degree from <strong>Newberry</strong> <strong>College</strong>, students must take the last 32 semester hours and at least 12<br />

semester hours in the major at <strong>Newberry</strong>, except as outlined in approved joint degree programs with other<br />

institutions.<br />

Transfer students from a senior level (four-year) college or university must earn a minimum of 12<br />

semester hours in the major and twenty-five percent (32 semester hours) of their total credit hours at<br />

<strong>Newberry</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />
