Core Curriculum<br />

The following Theatre and Speech courses meet Core Curriculum requirements:<br />

SPE 110, Public Speaking, satisfies Core requirements for Communications Skills, Area B-1.<br />

SPE 204, Oral Interpretation, satisfies Core requirements for Humanities, Area C-2.<br />

THE 101, Acting I; 110, Theatre Appreciation; 301, History of the Theatre; and<br />

481, Topics in Theatre, satisfy Core requirements for Fine Arts, Area C-3.<br />

Laboratory/Materials Fees<br />

Fees are charged each semester for each of the following courses:<br />

A $50 fee is charged for each of these courses: THE 104, 204, 232.<br />

A $75 fee is charged for THE 212, 231, 302.<br />

A $50 fee is charged for THE 303.<br />

Course Descriptions-Speech<br />

SPE 110. Public Speaking. (3)<br />

Prerequisite: ENG 111.<br />

An exploration and practice of the fundamental principles of oral communication in regards to public<br />

speaking. Interpersonal skills, organizing ideas into messages, and speaking dynamically and with purpose<br />

are major components of the class. Students apply and practice the art of public speaking as an active,<br />

dynamic process and the relationship between a positive attitude and effective oral communication is<br />

established. Informative, impromptu, extemporaneous and persuasive speaking are included.<br />

Required in the Core Curriculum. Speech 110 satisfies Core Curriculum requirements in Communication<br />

Skills, Area B-1.<br />

Offered every semester.<br />

SPE 202. Voice and Diction. (3)<br />

Study, description, and development of breathing techniques, vocal production, articulation, expressiveness,<br />

and Standard American Speech through the use of the International Phonetic Alphabet. Oral readings from<br />

literature are prepared and presented as part of class.<br />

Recommended for non-majors, especially for Communications majors.<br />

Offered fall semester, odd-numbered years.<br />

SPE 203. Argumentation. (3)<br />

Prerequisite: SPE 110.<br />

Critical analysis of and response to reasoning used in oral and written arguments. Students engage in<br />

debates and examine logical strengths and weaknesses of claims appearing in a variety of media.<br />

Offered at departmental discretion.<br />

SPE 204. Oral Interpretation: The Study of Literature through Performance. (3)<br />

A study of significant religious and secular literature as expressions of human culture. After thorough<br />

analysis, the student performs prose, poetry and/or dramatic literature, creating his or her own<br />

expression of human culture. Emphasis will be placed on the understanding and appreciation of<br />

literature and how that understanding can be communicated to an audience. Attendance at on-campus<br />

and off-campus performance events may be required.<br />

Speech 204 satisfies Core Curriculum requirements in Humanities and Fine Arts, Area C-2.<br />

Offered spring semester, even-numbered years.<br />
