26-person delegation to the 50 th Charter<br />

Anniversary <strong>of</strong> our Sister <strong>Club</strong>, the <strong>Rotary</strong><br />

<strong>Club</strong> <strong>of</strong> Taoyuan on the 6 th <strong>of</strong> November.<br />

to DGN Robert, who has not missed a single<br />

RC Taoyuan affair since the revival <strong>of</strong> the two<br />

RC <strong>Makati</strong> delegation<br />

clubs’ ties in October 2002 during his term as<br />

club president.<br />

giving thanks for the week that was—All<br />

Souls Day and the long weekend—prayed for<br />

“strength <strong>of</strong> spirit to face new challenges with<br />

humility and focus, for the greater good,” as<br />

“our lives are made richer by such challenges<br />

and it is our choice to be dynamic in meeting<br />

these head-on with clarity <strong>of</strong> purpose.” He<br />

went on: “We are gathered in prayer today,<br />

that our choices may bring only peace and<br />

hope to those whose lives we touch; that we<br />

may be given the grace to conduct ourselves<br />

in the image and likeness <strong>of</strong> God; that our<br />

thoughts and actions may reflect wisdom and<br />

compassion, in accordance with the will <strong>of</strong><br />

God.”<br />

Dayal Nandwani came up to thank<br />

those who came to the Indian temple the<br />

week before for the prayers for his daughter<br />

Pamela’s first death anniversary. He also put<br />

out an invitation to a talk on the Mystery <strong>of</strong><br />

Life by a lady spiritual speaker from Hong<br />

Kong, in commemoration <strong>of</strong> Pam’s birthday<br />

on Sunday, 20th November, 4-6 PM, at the<br />

Garden Function Room <strong>of</strong> Marriott Hotel at<br />

Resorts World.<br />

Crisis Preparedness Seminar<br />

with Dr. Mike Vergara as resource<br />

speaker on the 29th <strong>of</strong> October; the<br />

trip to Taiwan, 4-7 November, for the<br />

50th charter anniversary <strong>of</strong> RC Taoyuan with<br />

The guest speaker, Ms. Jeannie<br />

Javelosa, wears many hats--founder and<br />

president <strong>of</strong> ECHOstore Sustainable Lifestyle;<br />

executive director <strong>of</strong> ECHO Sustainable<br />

Initiatives (ECHOSI) Foundation; co-founder<br />

and director for Creative Strategies, EON<br />

Stakeholder Relations Firm; and curator <strong>of</strong><br />

the Yuchengco Museum. In all <strong>of</strong> these, she<br />

has a passion for sustainability, for making<br />

sure that we do good things for people and<br />

for the planet, and that these good things will<br />

last.<br />

Mr. Ramoncito S. Fernandez, 55 years old, married with six (6)<br />

children, is the President & Chief Executive Officer <strong>of</strong> Metro Pacific<br />

Tollways Corp. (MPTC) and Tollways Management Corporation (TMC).<br />

He holds directorships in Metro Pacific Investments Corporation (MPIC),<br />

Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC), Manila North Tollways<br />

Corporation (MNTC), Tollways Management Corporation (TMC), Smart<br />

Communications, Inc. and some subsidiaries <strong>of</strong> PLDT including PLDT<br />

Subic Telecom, Inc., PLDT Clark Telecom, Inc., PLDT Global Corporation<br />

and TAHANAN.<br />

He is the 2009 PISM GAWAD SINOP Awardee, an award conferred<br />

by the Foundation <strong>of</strong> the Society <strong>of</strong> Fellows in Supply Management and<br />

the Philippine Institute for Supply Management to outstanding achievers<br />

in the field <strong>of</strong> supply management.<br />

Mr. Fernandez has varied experience in international carrier<br />

business, administration and materials management, industrial<br />

marketing and sales. He was the Head <strong>of</strong> International and Carrier<br />

Business <strong>of</strong> PLDT and Smart and Global Access Group <strong>of</strong> Smart from<br />

2007 until December 31, 2008. He was the Administration and Materials<br />

Management Head <strong>of</strong> Smart from 2000, and <strong>of</strong> PLDT from 2004 until<br />

December 31, 2007. He was the Executive Vice President in charge <strong>of</strong><br />

marketing, sales and logistics <strong>of</strong> Starpack Philippines, Inc. until June<br />

2000.<br />

Mr. Fernandez obtained his Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science Degree in<br />

Industrial Management Engineering from the De La Salle University and<br />

Master’s Degree in Business Management from the Asian Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

Management.<br />

friends are making it happen. It started with ECHO—Environment and<br />

Community Hope Organization which basically aims to help small<br />

and marginalized communities and groups by selling their products<br />

and help move them towards the direction <strong>of</strong> sustainability. IN their<br />

bid to push the program, they have done interventions such as the<br />

ECHO Design Lab, which teaches people the rudiments <strong>of</strong> design<br />

so that they can marry beauty and functionality in the design <strong>of</strong><br />

their products and <strong>of</strong> the packaging as well; and the ECHO Teach<br />

Program which teaches corporations and academic institutions the<br />

hows and wherefors <strong>of</strong> the reduce-reuse-recycle campaign. ECHO<br />

They had prepared a program<br />

for their guests from far and near.<br />

There was golf on the 4 th though<br />

only PDG Sid was able to squeeze<br />

in time for a round on the fairway,<br />

and a concert at the Chung Li<br />

Art Center’s concert hall in the<br />

afternoon <strong>of</strong> the 5 th , attended by<br />

From the concert they moved<br />

to the Monarch Plaza Hotel for the<br />

welcome dinner for their Sister <strong>Club</strong><br />

guests. This was the occasion for<br />

the traditional exchange <strong>of</strong> gifts<br />

between the clubs, presidents<br />

and international service directors.<br />

Here, Pres. Rene exchanged gifts<br />

with RC Taoyuan Pres. Case,<br />

DGN Robert, who stood in for<br />

International Service Dir. Rodrigo<br />

Segura, delivered an impromptu<br />

message, and the RC Taoyuan<br />

<strong>Rotary</strong> Anns performed a dance<br />

number.<br />

Activities started a midafternoon<br />

on the 6 th at the lobby <strong>of</strong><br />

the Chuto Hotel with an exhibition<br />

<strong>of</strong> the winners and other entries <strong>of</strong><br />

a photography contest held earlier.<br />

This was followed by the exquisite<br />

tea ceremony, an elaborate ritual<br />

<strong>of</strong> tea and exquisite rice cakes<br />

presided over by RC Taoyuan<br />

<strong>Rotary</strong> Anns who had been trained<br />

in the art by <strong>Rotary</strong> Ann Betty,<br />

spouse <strong>of</strong> PDG Archi, a member<br />

<strong>of</strong> RC Taoyuan. The room was set<br />

up with reeds <strong>of</strong> bamboo, transforming it into<br />

a veritable bamboo garden.<br />

Everyone moved to the ballroom <strong>of</strong><br />

Chuto Hotel for the main program, which<br />

began at 5 PM, and the formal banquet that<br />

followed. The <strong>Club</strong> delegation had agreed to<br />

go Filipiniana, so they stood out, the ladies<br />

in their ternos and kimonos, the men in their<br />

formal Barong Tagalog. PP Cesar Campos<br />

drew applause when he did a belly dance<br />

with a lady dancer. Pres Rene and other club<br />

presidents delivered short messages. In his<br />

message, Pres. Rene traced the history <strong>of</strong> the<br />

relations between the two clubs, and thanked<br />

RC Taoyuan for their assistance in many RCM<br />

projects, their annual visits to Manila, and their<br />

warm hospitality. He also greeted Pres Case<br />

‘happy birthday,’ a happenstance that caught<br />

Pres. Case, and noticed the birthday entry.<br />

He called the attention <strong>of</strong> DGN Robert who<br />

lost no time in sending a note to Pres. Rene<br />

about it.<br />

Entertainment came via a pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

performer who sang and danced while doing<br />

magic tricks. The banquet was a sumptuous<br />

12-course lauriat that was enjoyed by all, hosts<br />

and guests alike.<br />

City Government<br />

The City Government <strong>of</strong> <strong>Makati</strong><br />

gave recognition to RC <strong>Makati</strong><br />

and Frank Chavez in ceremonies<br />

marking Children’s Assembly 2011<br />

on the 26 th <strong>of</strong> October 2011 at the<br />

University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Makati</strong>. The Children’s<br />

Assembly was the culmination<br />

<strong>of</strong> the celebration <strong>of</strong> National<br />

Children’s Month (October) by the<br />

City Government and the <strong>Makati</strong><br />

City Council for the Protection <strong>of</strong><br />

Children (MCCPC).<br />

The award conferred on the <strong>Club</strong> was<br />

in recognition <strong>of</strong> its “unwavering support and<br />

funding <strong>of</strong> various programs and activities <strong>of</strong><br />

the City Government <strong>of</strong> <strong>Makati</strong> through the<br />

<strong>Makati</strong> Social Welfare Department (MSWD)<br />

for the welfare, development and protection<br />

<strong>of</strong> the children <strong>of</strong> <strong>Makati</strong>.” It was received by<br />

Pres. Rene Limjoco.<br />

Another plaque was given to Frank<br />

Chavez in appreciation and recognition <strong>of</strong><br />

Pres. Rene Limjoco Dir. Fred Menzel<br />

his staunch advocacy <strong>of</strong> the protection <strong>of</strong><br />

children’s rights which led to his involvement<br />

in and contributions to Bantay Bata, which he<br />

has chaired since its inception in 1996. The<br />

Bantay Bata program is a joint undertaking <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>Club</strong> and the <strong>Makati</strong> SWD. Fred Menzel<br />

received the plaque for Frank.<br />

The highlight <strong>of</strong> the program was the<br />

2 nd State <strong>of</strong> the Children Address by Mayor<br />

Jejomar Erwin “Jun Jun” Binay, Jr., who is<br />

concurrently chair <strong>of</strong> the MCCPC. Ms. Marjorie<br />

de Veyra, MSWD head and MCCPC co-chair,<br />

also delivered a special message. PP Cesar<br />

Campos was also present at the event.<br />

The event also coincided with the<br />

awarding <strong>of</strong> prizes to the winners <strong>of</strong> the 2011<br />

Search for the Most Friendly Barangay in<br />

<strong>Makati</strong>, an activity for National Children’s<br />

Month.<br />

Sponsorships for Christmas Bazaar now<br />

at P235,000 . . . more needed<br />

The Christmas Bazaar has been a great help for the <strong>Club</strong> for the<br />

past twenty-three years. It has generated upwards <strong>of</strong> P<strong>15</strong> million since<br />

its first run in November 1988, an amount that’s nothing to sneeze at.<br />

This year, more than most years in the past, the <strong>Club</strong> needs<br />

funds to keep it running smoothly and ensure that the projects get done<br />

on schedule. The bazaar raises funds from the rental <strong>of</strong> space by the<br />

vendors, the sale <strong>of</strong> tickets, and proceeds from the White Elephant<br />

table. One <strong>of</strong> the main means to raise money is through sponsorships,<br />

a job that this year falls on the shoulders <strong>of</strong> Pres. Rene Limjoco. Pres.<br />

Rene has been making calls, tapping shoulders and pushing buttons<br />

to get the cash registers ringing, so to speak. His efforts have so far<br />

yielded P235,000, and counting, we hope.<br />

He would like to give due recognition and thanks to the following<br />
