Being an international student in the US, particularly
in the post-September 11 climate, can
seem a bit a scary, given the stories you might
have heard. But rest assured, if you are a bona
fide student pursuing a degree at a reputable
university such as Penn and have no criminal
record, you have nothing to worry about.
In the eight years that I’ve been a foreign
resident in the States, the one thing I’ve learnt
is to be absolutely honest and never lie, even
if for the smallest thing. Stay on top of any
documents or papers that need to be updated
and make sure that you receive constant communication
from Penn’s Office of International
Programs (OIP). If you haven’t already attended
the International Student Orientation and registered
with OIP, you should do so immediately.
The majority of international students are in the
country on an F-1 (student) visa, though
some might be here on a J-1 visa (for exchange
scholars). If you are holding an F-1 visa, you
will also have a form I-20, issued by Penn, that
is as important as your visa. Don’t be fooled by
