getting around BiKES & BiKinG DIRECTIONS: By car, take I-76 W to I-676 E to I-95 N towards Trenton. Exit at Cottman Ave/Rhawn Street and go north on Cottman, then turn right onto Torresdale Avenue. After Torresdale crosses the creek, park near the prison. miSCELLAnEoUS Connect with the folks at the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia (bikephilly.org) for more routes, safety tips, maps, and how the heck you take your bike on public transportation. Finally, please be advised that Philly is known for its annual Naked Bike Ride. Food tRUCKS FaST FOOD BURRitoS DINING alFRESCO CHEaP EaTS ChEESEStEAKS NEaR CaMPUS STEVEN STaRR FindinG Food KEEP ON (FOOD) TRUCKIN’ Philadelphia is renowned for its food. Traditionally, it’s been mostly about three items: cheesesteaks, hoagies, and soft pretzels. But ask a Philadelphia foodie what they’re favorite hometown dish is, and you’ll more likely hear responses such as banh mi, tacos al pastor, and tofu meatballs. In my opinion, the best restaurants aren’t the ones that have storefronts, tables, and waiters, but instead are the ones that live are on four wheels and travel the city. Philadelphia’s hundreds of food trucks and carts serve everything from General Tso’s chicken to pork buns, enchiladas verde to edamame tacos, and tiramisu macaroons to earl grey tea ice cream. In University City, where a salad from Houston Hall or Cosi cuts deep into your bank account, there are hordes of food trucks serving up all kinds of delicious, original, and fresh fare at reasonable prices. As a first year, you may find yourself willing to venture forth into this food scene and wonder which trucks are worth visit- PDPRIMER 2011 130
