getting around PEnn tRAnSit elementary school-style bus with no lighting, so forget about reading your history assignment on the ride home. Drivers usually don’t check IDs when you use the bus. Both bus and shuttle systems are free and run year-round, except major holidays. PEnnShUttLE White vans with shazam logos run east, west, and north, indicated by a lighted E, W or N on top. The west route picks up regularly at transit stops from 6pm to 3am; all other service is on-call. You will usually have to meet the shuttle at the closest transit stop on campus, but they’ll bring you right to your apartment, as long as you live within the boundaries of the shuttle service. You can also be picked up at your apartment and brought back to campus, but not between two offcampus locations. The disadvantage is long wait times (officially five to 20 minutes, but many times it’s longer). getting around nEW YoRK & WAShinGton, dC RAiL/RoAd RULES nEW YoRK Commuter Rail Two transit bureaucracies grudgingly join hands in Trenton, NJ, with connecting trains running about once an hour from early morning until around midnight. It can be a hassle switching at Trenton, especially if you’re weighted down with baggage. But by virtue of their predictability, they don’t typically waste your time if you’re prompt. Though they’ll fill up entirely at times (like holiday weekends), you can often get a pair of seats to yourself, preferable for getting things done on route, whether that’s reading or napping. At 30th Street Station, go up the ramp from the main room to reach SEPTA. Opt for the NJ Transit machine instead of the SEPTA ticket window: it gives you the choice of cash or plastic, and you can buy your roundtrip tickets all the way to New York. Otherwise, you’ll nEW YoRK & WAShinGton, dC need to get additional tickets at Trenton where there may be precious few minutes to spare. Leaving Philadelphia, don’t get yourself confused with the R7 to Chestnut Hill East or the R3 to West Trenton—they’re not what you want. If you cut your timing too close, know that you can purchase tickets on either train, but the conductor will charge you extra for it. At Trenton, you can pretty well follow the crowds. Conductors will give directions if they know where you’ll get the next train. If the incoming train ran late, be prepared to hustle to get the connecting train. Don’t try to make a run to the bathroom—use NJ Transit’s on-board ones (no facilities on SEPTA). On the NJ Transit train, don’t be confused by Penn Station, Newark. If you want New York City, stay on through the tunnels until the last stop. nEW YoRK/dC Buses Looking to get out of Dodge? Just a few years ago, the Chinatown buses were the only affordable option, and usually came bundled with a somewhat sketchy encounter. Fortunately, more competition in recent years has made a quick weekend trip to a trip to NY, DC, and elsewhere a lot easier. Power outlets and wi-fi services offered on Bolt Bus and Megabus are fairly reliable so you can even get some writing done during your journey and somewhat justify your escape. PDPRIMER 2011 110
