survival guide hiStoRiC PRESERVAtion hiStoRiC PRESERVAtion PEoPLE What you learn depends on you, but you’ve got a brilliant group of faculty to help: • Randy Mason, preservation planner and program chair • Frank Matero, world-traveling preservationist extraordinaire • Aaron Wunsch, architecture historian par excellence • David Hollenberg, gregarious architect and policymaker • John Hinchman, invaluable digital design master • Lindsay Falck, fount of knowledge • Donovan Rypkema, energetic economic guru • John Milner, hands-on architectural archaeologist • Michael Henry, amazingly dedicated preservation engineer All the professors are exceptional. Get to know them after class, during office hours, and over coffee, especially when you start thinking about thesis ideas. You also have Suzanne Hyndman and Karen Gomez in your corner. Be really, really nice to them. They’re the first line of HSPV defense, and they can (and will) save you in your hour of need. BonUS You’re already on your way to a Master’s of Science in Historic Preservation, which sounds great and works 75 PDPRIMER 2011 even better at opening interesting doors. If you still want more, you can get a certificate or dual degree from/with a number of other programs at Penn and within the School of Design. It’s a great opportunity for additional specialization, though you trade many of your electives for the privilege. Remember that applications for dual degrees are due before the beginning of your second semester, and watch certificate deadlines as well. WhAt YoU ShoULd SPEnd monEY on in Addition to tUition Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office, at least one memory stick, a laptop and a security cable, and a digital camera. Maybe a bike (and definitely a helmet and bike lights!). Chocolate, beer, or whatever you need to stay sane. AdVEntURE Close to home, there’s Happy Hour. The best place to meet other PennDesign people and socialize with other HSPVers, you can’t beat free beer and soda, pretzels, and loud music at the end of a long week. Go early and often. Also go to the Art Museum, the Mütter Museum, and Eastern State Penitentiary—we like the Terror Behind the Walls tours at Halloween. When the weather’s nice, run or cycle along the Schuylkill Banks trail and go hiking in the Wissahickon. Sled PDPRIMER 2011 76

There are a number of groups within PennDesign, but you can get involved in any Penn student group. Salsa dancing, rugby, and theater can be great ways to remind yourself that there is life outside the studio! • To regularly back up all your data to an external hard drive, as your laptop can be stolen or crash at the most inconvenient time. You have your own folder on the school server too. • To apply for travel and conference scholarships. The HSPV department has some, the National Trust for Historic Preservation has some, the Keepers Preservation Education Fund has some, and the World Monument Fund has been known to fund travel related to its projects. Take advantage of those resources, and make some professional connections while you’re at it! • Do the assigned readings as much as possible for every class, but don’t kill yourself. Make a study schedule, prioritize your interests, be disciplined. Figure out what works for you, and know that (almost) no one reads everything. • Have fun! Stay sane!
