ADDING AXIS II PERSONALITY DISORDERS INTO THE<br />

MIX: DO THEY INCREASE TREATMENT-SEEKING<br />

BEHAVIORS IN MALES AND FEMALES WITH SUBSTANCE<br />

USE DISORDERS?<br />

Aims: <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> co-morbidity of substance use and Axis II disorders is well-established.<br />

Rates of pers<strong>on</strong>ality disorders (PD) in individuals with substance use disorders<br />

(SUD) are high. While the exact relati<strong>on</strong>ship between SUD and PD is still<br />

debated, the impact of PD <strong>on</strong> treatment outcomes is well-known. Less is known,<br />

however, about the extent to which Axis II disorders influence treatment seeking<br />

behavior and if these relati<strong>on</strong>ships vary by gender and type(s) of Axis II PD.<br />

Methods: Study participants were 12,707 current or past substance users who<br />

were part of the Nati<strong>on</strong>al Epidemiologic Survey of Alcohol and Related<br />

C<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s (NESARC). Of these, 3,201 also met criteria for Antisocial,<br />

Avoidant, Dependant, Obsessive-Compulsive, Paranoid, Schizoid, or Histri<strong>on</strong>ic<br />

pers<strong>on</strong>ality disorder (PD). Demographically, the participants were primarily<br />

Caucasian (67.6%), male (61.9%), and a mean age of 42.6 years. SUD and PD<br />

were identified using the NIAAA Alcohol Use Disorder and Associated<br />

Disabilities Interview Schedule–DSM-IV Versi<strong>on</strong> (AUDADIS-IV).<br />

Results: Preliminary analyses found am<strong>on</strong>g individuals with alcohol use disorders<br />

(AUD), (N=11,748), those with co-morbid Axis II PDs (N=2,943) were<br />

nearly twice as likely to seek treatment (22.6%) compared to those with AUDs<br />

al<strong>on</strong>e (13.3%) (p
