Winnetka-Northfield Community Guide 

behalf of the newly formed Winnetka-Northfield Chamber of Commerce, we are proud to 

present the 2011 Community Guide. 

Over the last several months, we along with many others, have worked diligently and respectfully to merge 

our two Chambers together. Now with a larger and ever growing membership, we have more resources for 

events and programs which will benefit chamber members, residents and businesses in our communities. We 

look forward to continuing to promote our established events, business projects and networking functions, 

while expanding our horizons and planning for new opportunities. 

The 2011 Winnetka-Northfield Community Guide contains valuable resources in our villages. It is a 

comprehensive guide to shopping, dining and services within our communities. This resource contains

The Winnetka Police Department enjoys a complement of 27 sworn officers 

and 9 civilian employees. It provides law enforcement services to the community 

including crime prevention, parking enforcement, animal control, and variety 

of safety, public education and social service programs. A school resource 

officer is assigned to New Trier High School and a school visitation program 

officer monitors safety and security of the grade schools. 

Upon request, the department conducts home and business security surveys 

and provides a “vacation house watch” service; it monitors a burglar alarm panel 

for Winnetka residents and businesses. 

In order to provide a higher degree of safety and security to the community, 

the Winnetka Police Department participates as a member of various Inter- 

Governmental Mutual Aid Groups. These groups provide the additional 

resources necessary to address emergencies and major investigations, 

supplementing and complementing the Winnetka Police Department. 

Some of these groups are the North Suburban Major Crimes Task Force 

(NORTAF), Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS), Northeastern 

Illinois Regional Crime Lab (NIRCL), and the Illinois Law Enforcement 

Alarm System (ILEAS).

The Village Police Department consists of 19 sworn officers, one full-time 

public service officer and 9 civilian employees, 6 full-time and 3 part-time. The 

police department carries out all of the usual police functions of patrol, criminal 

investigation and traffic control. The police also provide special services, such 

as house watch patrol for vacationing residents, home security checks, Officer 

Friendly, Elderly Services Officer, School Resources Officer and respond to 

many varied requests for information and assistance. All sworn officers are 

certified medical technicians and initiate preliminary care in emergency cases 

until relieved by ambulance personnel. Officers pride themselves in providing

The Winnetka Fire Department consists of 24 career fire personnel which 

includes: 1 Fire Chief, 1 Deputy Chief, 3 Captain Paramedics, 4 Lieutenant 

Paramedics, 15 Firefighters/Paramedics, 1 Secretary and 1 part-time Fire 

Inspector. 

The department provides a variety of services to Winnetka residents. These 

include fire suppression, advanced life support ambulance and rescue service, 

certified underwater dive rescue and recovery, technical rescue (high rise, 

trench, etc.), fire origin and cause investigations, fire scene photography, fire 

prevention, and public education programs. 

The department is a member of the Regional Emergency Dispatch (RED 

Center) making it part of a centralized emergency dispatch center serving 

area fire departments. The system is capable of providing efficient fire and 

emergency medical dispatch. Emergency medical dispatch provides prearrival 

instructions such as CPR, prior to the arrival of the paramedics. 

The Public Education Division provides Winnetka citizens of all ages with 

preventative life safety information. The department conducts home safety 

surveys for residents on request and will also arrange, where possible, to 

have a fire engine visit your next block party. Educational tours of the fire 

station are conducted on Fridays for all organizations including the Scouts, 

pre-school groups, and other special interest groups. For Public Education

The Northfield Fire-Rescue Department was established in 1939 with 

twenty volunteer firefighters in the orgnization. Today, the Northfield 

Fire-Rescue Department operates with over fifty part-time fire and rescue 

staff who bring expertise from around the Chicagoland area. The Fire- 

Rescue Department operates out of one station located at 1800 Winnetka 

Road and covers a three square mile area within the Village in addition to 

participation in a mutal aid system with neighboring communities.

A Council-Manager form of government serves residents of Northfield. 

The council consists of a Village President and a six-member Board of 

Trustees elected for staggered terms of four years. The President and 

Board are responsible for establishing policies, enacting ordinances; 

approving expenses and appointing the Village Manager, the Village 

Treasurer and members of the various boards and commissions. 

The Manager is the chief administrative officer of the Village and is 

appointed for an indefinite period. The duties of the Manager include: 

appointing the Village Attorney, the Village Engineer, the Village 

Prosecutor, enforcement of ordinances, policies and rules established 

by the Board of Trustees; advising the Board on establishment of new 

policies; preparation of the annual budget; appointment of regular village 

employees; and review and supervision of departmental performances. 

The President and Board of Trustees appoint the Village Clerk and 

Deputy Village Clerk. The Clerk maintains a permanent record of 

Board actions, affixes the Village seal to official documents, attests to 

licenses and registers voters.

including: assistance with property tax questions, voters’ registration 

and passport services including passport photos, Dial-a-Ride (a 

subsidized taxi program), temporary disability parking cards and road 

and bridge maintenance in unincorporated areas. 

The Township also offers general and emergency assistance to residents 

in financial need and operates a food pantry. Special pantry projects 

include holiday distributions and new school supplies. 

Community Services 

The Pantry is open during regular Township office hours. The Pantry 

is also open the first and second Saturdays of the month (September- 

May) from 9 am – noon. The Pantry provides both perishable and 

non-perishable food items, paper goods, school supplies and holiday 

programs for township residents experiencing financial difficulties.

History of Winnetka 


Legend tells us that in 1674 Father Marquette and an Indian guide 

voyaged up the shores of Lake Michigan. They paused to admire the 

lush and lovely scene which the guide described in his own language: 

“Winnetka!” It meant Beautiful Land. It still does. 

In 1836, covered wagons from Vermont were traveling northward on the 

Green Bay Trail when they stopped in Winnetka. Erastus Patterson, his wife, 

Zernah, and their five children stayed behind to settle here. Within a year 

of building their two-room cabin, stagecoach service began between Chicago 

and Milwaukee. 

The Patterson’s built a tavern across the Trail from their cabin and named it 

The Wayside Inn. By the 1850’s it was renamed, the Pattern Tavern, and was 

a regular stop for the twice-weekly scheduled stagecoaches that traveled the 

Green Bay Trail. 

Charles and Sara Peck, who are considered the founders of Winnetka, moved 

to Winnetka in 1853. Charles and his friend, Walter S. Gurnee, president of 

the newly formed Chicago & Milwaukee Railroad, platted 300 acres in New 

Trier Township. Sara organized the first school by hiring a fifteen year old 

teacher from Chicago who came to live with the Pecks. The Pecks donated 

the land in Winnetka now known as the Village Green. 

When John Garland, a Methodist minister from England, arrived in 1869, 

he purchased both the Patterson home and tavern. On the steep hill home 

site of the Patterson’s log cabin, Garland built a union meeting hall for all 

religious denominations in Winnetka. Gravestones of the Erastus Patterson 

family remain on this original site. One hundred years later, in 1969 Winnetka 

incorporated as a Village. 

Winnetka is 18 miles north of Chicago on the shores of Lake Michigan. The 

four Shopping Districts of Winnetka - Hubbard Woods, West Elm, East 

Elm, and Indian Hill - are easy to get to from anywhere in the Northern 

Chicagoland area.

Northfield was a remote swamp when settlers first arrived in the 1850s to 

farm. Residents of neighboring communities often called Northfielders the 

“river folks” because they struggled to get to church or the beach in their 

wagons while crossing the Skokie Lagoons and the Middlefork of the north 

branch of the Chicago River. 

Early pioneer families included the Brachtendorf family, for whom Bracken 

Lane is named. They arrived in 1857, and their family home still stands at 

2264 Willow Rd. Dennis Donovan, who lived just east of the Brachtendorfs, 

arriving with his family in a coal wagon in 1855. Charles Metz came in 1861 

and settled where Somerset Lane is today. His family farmed on that land 

until the 1950s. John Happ, for whom Happ Road is named, was a blacksmith 

who came with his nine sons and daughter in the late 1850s. The arrival of the 

railroad in Winnetka in 1854 prompted him to close his blacksmith shop and 

move to Northfield to farm. Happ’s grandson John became Northfield’s first 

village president in 1926. 

During the last half of the nineteenth century, farm products included hay and 

grain, packing straw from the Skokie Swamps, mushrooms and horseradish. 

History of Northfield 


In the early 1920s, the community changed dramatically when Samuel Insull, 

a powerful Chicago entrepreneur who headed the electric firm later named 

Commonwealth Edison, built the Skokie Valley Line of the North Shore 

Railway. He held a contest to name the village, which was incorporated in 

1926. The name Wau-Bun was chosen. Wau-Bun is an Indian word meaning 

dawn, which was also the name of a Wisconsin Indian Chief who camped 

in the area as part of the Pottawatomie tribe in the late 1700s. Locals always 

disliked the name. In 1927, Wau-Bun was formally dropped in favor of 

Northfield, which referred to the community’s location from Chicago. 

From this small beginning, the Village began to attract other north shore 

families who liked its small size and remote country atmosphere. Its population 

surged from 320 residents in 1930 to 4,887 in 1980, and today has grown to 

5,726 per a special census in 2006. A village hall was built at the intersection 

of Happ and Willow Roads in 1936 and was used for 31 years. A much larger 

facility is now located on the same site.

service club in Northfield. Its fund raising activities

organizations as well as those dedicated to aiding 

sight and hearing impaired. The club also supports

aid in the acquisition, beautification, development 

and preservation of public park lands and

$1 million renovation of Clarkson Park…The 

Heart of Northfield. The current project is the 

$4 million renovation of Willow Park…Where

The society promotes awareness of Winnetka’s 

heritage through artifact collection and 

preservation, public access to its research center 

and programs, exhibits and publications. The 

headquarters and museum at 411 Linden St. 

is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 

1 to 4 p.m. and by appointment. Admission to 

the museum is free. The house is open to the public 

for docent-led tours once a month, from May to 

October on Sunday afternoon, 1-4p.m. Admission 

is $5 for adults, $3 for children age 6-17, free to 

children under 6 and Historical Society members.

The Winnetka Historical Society educates people on the stories of 

our past, in an effort to enrich our present and inspire our future. We 

promote awareness of Winnetka’s heritage through artifact collection 

and preservation, public access to our research center, and enlightening

had several homes over the decades. Its headquarters and museum, is 

the Civil-war era house at 411 Linden Street. 

It is one of the few remaining examples of Gothic Revival architecture 

in the Village. Our new home provides exhibit, research and 

programming spaces, and also houses the Society’s extensive collection. 

The Winnetka Historical Society owns another historic treasure in 

Winnetka, the Schmidt-Burnham Log House, circa 1837. 

Distinguished as the longest continually inhabited house in northern 

Illinois, the log house was gifted to the Society in 2001 by the family of 

Ann Hibbard Burnham Smith and was moved to Crow Island Woods 

two years later. The Society has restored this fine example of pioneer 

architecture as a “house museum.” It is open to the public from May- 

October and is open to groups throughout the year. Visit our website

The A.C. Nielsen Tennis Center is complete with eight indoor and 

12 outdoor courts (five that are lighted.) A nursery, pro shop, shower 

and locker rooms are just a few of the amenities that the facility has 

to offer. Group lessons are available for all ages and abilities. Our 

professional tennis staff is available for private lessons during the week 

and on weekends. 

Winnetka Ice Arena 



The Winnetka Ice Arena offers a variety of skating activities to area 

residents. Whether your preference is hockey or recreational skating, 

the Ice Arena has something to offer. Programs are conducted by both 

Ice Arena staff professionals and affiliate organizations to provide a 

comprehensive program to the community. 

Platform Tennis 



Platform Tennis is easy and quick to learn. Enjoy the exhilaration of 

active, outdoor recreation during the crisp fall and winter months. 

There are six top quality lighted courts, with heated decks to melt 

snow and permit play all winter long. 

Winnetka Golf Club 



The Winnetka Golf Club provides golfing opportunities and enjoyment 

for players of all skill levels and interests. The 18-hole course is an 

excellent 6,517 yard layout with watered tees, fairways and greens. 

The Par-3 course is fun and challenging to players of all ages.

Three park districts serve the Village of Northfield. The Northfield 

Park District boundaries coincide in general with those of Sunset 

Ridge School District #29 and include much of the unincorporated 

area north and west of the Village. The southeast part of Northfield 

is in the Winnetka Park District and a small area in the southwest 

section corresponding to Glenview District #34 is located in the 

Glenview Park District. Bordered on the east by the Skokie Lagoons 

Forest Preserve and Erickson Woods on the south, the Village offers 

miles of scenic parks and recreational areas for outdoor activities.

The District was established in 1957 and includes 3 parks: Willow 

Park, Clarkson Park, Fox Meadow Park and one community center. 

Park District Rental 

Are you looking for a place for your next business meeting, luncheon, 

training or company picnic? Look no further than the Northfield 

Park District facilities, the Community Center and Clarkson 

Lodge. The Community Center can accommodate approximately 

30-40 people for primarily meetings and training. The Clarkson 

Lodge can accommodate or hold up to 75 indoors and could hold 

up to 150 if using the Lodge and outside patio as well as outdoor 

shelter. Large gas grills are also available for an additional cost. 

Reservations are currently being taken for the 2010/2011 season 

and are accepted on a first come, first serve basis. If you would like 

a tour of either facility or to reserve a date, please contact Lara Piner

NSSRA 

The North Suburban Special Recreation Association (NSSRA), a 

partnership of ten park districts and two cities, connects recreation, 

leisure skills and sports to Northfield residents with a wide range of 

disabilities. Together, NSSRA and the Northfield Park District make 

high-quality, fun-filled recreation programs available to everyone. 

NSSRA conducts more than 200 programs each year. For more

The North Shore Senior Center (NSSC) 

is headquartered in Northfield and serves 

older adults and their families throughout 

Chicago’s northern suburbs with a wide 

range of social services, fitness and health 

programs, lifelong learning classes and 

programs, volunteer opportunities, and adult 

day services and other programs for persons 

with memory loss. Individuals and family 

members are encouraged to call NSSC with 

any questions related to growing older. 

Primarily a social service agency, NSSC

subjects, keep healthy, and give back to our
