Le Mot Juste
As the saying goes “We are
living in interesting times.”
For the pessimists, these times
confirm their beliefs that
things are dreadfully wrong
with society, our nation, and
international affairs. There is
no doubt that there are many
current events that we are
watching with utter dread and
disbelief. There is ongoing
conflict in various parts of the
world. The global economic
crisis impacts our daily lives.
Some technological advances
are influencing our daily private
lives negatively at a rate
that we never would have
imagined. But an optimist
would view the very same
situations as a way to unify us
even more as nation, a province,
a city, but most impor-
Message from the Administration
tantly as a school and a family.
We are living in times that
need to be questioned.
There are essential questions
that we need to ask ourselves
on an ongoing basis in order to
continue living a life of value:
• Are we informed on what
is currently occurring in our
nation, city and school to offer
support and critical opinions
are how to improve the lives
of others?
• Do we provide support for
others that might have different
cultural or religious views
than our own?
• Do our children know the
difference between a need and
a want?
• Do we value education as
Bolivian Night
means of creating equality
for all?
• Do we control our
money or does money control
us?
• Do we look and actively
listen to a child when they
are talking to us?
• Do we know what our
children are watching
through the media?
• Do we voice our displeasure
when others are
treated unjustly?
• Do we respect our environment
for the future generations?
Do we take time for family,
friends and ourselves?
We invite our community to
Come and hear, see, and taste a slice of Bolivian culture
questions that we need to
focus on in order to accomplish
the principle Henry
Brougham so eloquently
stated ‘Education makes
people easy to lead, but difficult
to drive; easy to govern,
Students wishing to make changes
in their second semester schedule
are asked to make an appointment
with Mme Konczak.
Please keep in mind that some requests
cannot be fulfilled, as classes
may be at maximum capacity.
What Is It?
Test anxiety is actually a type of performance
anxiety - a feeling someone
might have in a situation where performance
really counts or when the
pressure's on to do well. This is often
the case with tests and exams, which
may be considered “high-stakes testing”.
Test anxiety can bring on "butterflies,"
a stomachache, or a tension headache.
Other physical reactions include shaking,
sweating, or a racing pulse. A person
may even feel like throwing up.
Stress causes the body to release the
hormone adrenaline, which prepares it
for danger (adrenaline helps us with the
"fight or flight" reaction). That's what
causes the physical symptoms, such as
sweating, a pounding heart, and rapid
breathing. These sensations might be
mild or intense.
Second Semester Course Changes
Test Taking Anxiety
What Can You Do?
Use a little stress to your
advantage.
Stress is your body's warning mechanism
- it's a signal that helps you prepare
for something important that's
about to happen. So use it to your advantage.
Instead of reacting to the stress
by dreading, complaining, or fretting
about the test with friends, take an active
approach. Let stress remind you to
study well in advance of a test.
Ask for help.
Although a little test anxiety can be a
good thing, an overdose of it is another
story entirely. If sitting for a test gets
you so stressed out that your mind goes
blank and causes you to miss answers
that you know, then your level of test
anxiety probably needs some attention.
Your teacher, your school guidance
counsellor, or a tutor can be useful resources
to talk to if you always get extreme
test anxiety.
Be prepared.
Some students think that going to class
is all it should take to learn and do well
on tests. But there's much more to learning
than just hoping to soak everything
up in class. That's why good study habits
and skills are so important - and why
no amount of cramming or studying the
night before a test can take the place of
the deeper level of learning that happens
over time with regular study. It makes
sense - the more you know the material,
the more confident you'll feel. Having
The following courses are nearing
maximum capacity:
• Biology 30S block A & C
• English 40S Trans. block A & B
• Physics block E
• French 30S block A
• History 30S block C
confidence going into a test means you
expect to do well. When you expect to
do well, you'll be able to relax into a
test after the normal first-moment jitters
pass.
Watch what you're thinking.
If you find yourself thinking negative
thoughts ("I'm never any good at taking
tests," or "It's going to be terrible if I do
badly on this test"), replace them with
positive messages. Not unrealistic positive
messages, of course, but ones that
are practical and true, such as "I've studied
hard and I know the material, so I'm
ready to do the best
I can." (Of course, if you haven't studied,
this message won't help!)
Accept mistakes.
Another thing you can do is to learn to
keep mistakes in perspective - especially
if you're a perfectionist or you
tend to be hard on yourself. Everyone
makes mistakes. Learning to tolerate
small failures and mistakes is a valuable
skill.
Take care of yourself.
It can help to learn ways to calm yourself
down and get centred when you're
tense or anxious. For some people, this
might mean learning a simple breathing
exercise. Practicing breathing exercises
regularly (when you're not stressed out)
helps your body see these exercises as a
signal to relax.
And, of course, taking care of your
health - such as getting enough sleep,
exercise, and healthy eats before a test -
can help keep your mind working at its
best.
The 2010 France Trip planning committee
is busy working with Duvine Adventures
to develop a Spring French Cycling
Adventure for students who will
be in grades 12 and 11 for the 2009-10
school year.
The adventure includes 6 days of
(moderate ) cycling in the Provence
area, 3 days of sightseeing in Paris, and
2 travel days. Bikes, helmets and safety
gear are provided by Duvine.
This 11-day journey includes such activities
New Teacher Web sites, or portals,
can now be accessed via our new
Teaching mandate. Our Web site
can be viewed from any internet
user seeking overviews of our programming,
information pertaining
to calendar events, news, access to
pertinent documents including our
In fact, this edition of the Mot Juste
will be our final full-edition mailout.
Subsequent newsletters will be
available in electronic format directly
from our Web site. We believe
this is a logical progression as
we become increasingly comfortable
with the new technology, not to
mention the incurred decrease in
paper and mailing costs. Naturally,
we will have copies printed for
those parents who request them.
Now we are pleased to announce
that parents and students in our
school community will be granted
the usernames and passwords required
to access our teacher portals
which are currently in various states
of development. Our goal is to have
each teacher provide course information,
important due dates, links,
and relevant documents in time for
the 2 nd semester. Students and parents
will be able to email teachers
directly via the portal should they
wish. We believe these Web sites
will be useful in helping keep students
and their parents informed of
course developments. Some teachers
have really embraced this project
as you will discover sites that
are not only informative, but mildly
entertaining as well.
Web site, users can access the
Pandemic Preparedness Guidelines in Place
The guidelines were developed by a pandemic
planning committee that included
the assistant superintendent of student
services, division administrators, teachers,
support staff and a representative
from the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.
The committee, which worked for
almost two years to develop the guidelines,
also solicited input from the division’s
unions and professional associations.
Some of the issues that will face RETSD
in the event of a pandemic include student
and employee absenteeism, possible
school closures, interruption of services
and supplies, and the reassignment
of duties. The guidelines outline
plans to address these and other challenges.
The guidelines will also be shared
with the community during the Parent
Advisory Committee meeting on
February 11, 2009 at 7pm.

school-based account. The more we
order, the more profit the students
make. Cards can be purchased in
the following denominations $10,
$25, $50, $100, $200, $300, or
$400.
If we reach an order of $10 000 or
more, the percentage of profit is
8%, which on a $300 card would be
$24.00. The turn around time from
receive your card would be approxi-
Your involvement in your child’s
education is absolutely essential to
his/her eventual successes. Studies
have proven that parental involvement
significantly affects a child’s
success in school. So get involved,
it’ll have a positive impact on everyone.
