Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of <strong>Iasi</strong><br />
The Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of <strong>Iasi</strong> (TU IASI) has the oldest<br />
tradition in the engineering field of education in Romania. In 1813 the scholar<br />
Gheorghe Asachi established the first school for surveyors and civil engineers<br />
considered to be the nucleus of the technical higher education in <strong>Iasi</strong>. Currently, the<br />
Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of <strong>Iasi</strong> has 11 faculties and 4 departments that<br />
offer educational and doctoral programmes for more than 17000 students in 61<br />
engineering specializations, 73 Master of Science programs and 10 doctoral schools.<br />
Besides its educational mission, the Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of<br />
<strong>Iasi</strong> has an important research dimension, having 21 accredited centers and<br />
laboratories for scientific research. These centers activate in different fields, within<br />
national and international research grants, research contracts with industry or<br />
governmental organizations, their activities placing our university in the Romanian<br />
top of scientific research.<br />
The constant focus on interdisciplinary research, on innovation and<br />
knowledge transfer, as well the quality of the research staff and their commitment<br />
for excellence provided a constant dynamics of research activities and the<br />
recognition and visibility of our university. The increased trend observed in the<br />
number of research contracts, published papers in peer reviewed international<br />
journals and conference proceedings, books, international co‐operation grants, as<br />
well as joint Ph.D. supervision with well‐known <strong>Europe</strong>an universities contribute to<br />
the continuous appreciation of our university as a successful research and innovation<br />
institution able to provide proactive relationships with industry and public services<br />
and a contributor to local and regional development. Only in the last academic year,<br />
our university has participated in more than 350 national and international projects as<br />
well as research contracts .<br />
Our research profile is directed towards high‐tech engineering areas, which<br />
enable our research staff to have a very innovative approach towards research<br />
problems. Innovation in our university comes as sum of experience provided by our<br />
172 of senior researchers, PhD supervisors and the enthusiasm brought by our 1512<br />
PhD. students. This focus on scientific research in high‐tech areas and cutting‐edge<br />
technologies is proven by the outstanding innovation capabilities of our staff<br />
members that have produced nearly 65% of the Romanian patents in the last 10 years,<br />
which enabled our institution to win the Creativity Trophy issued by the National<br />
Register of Inventions and Trademarks in 2006.
