WHAT IS
A VET
COURSE?
Vocational
Education and Training
(also known as VET) is education
and training that gives students skills
and knowledge for work.
IN A VET COURSE
STUDENTS UNDERTAKE:
Off the job learning at a school or
another training provider. Students
complete Units of Competency
from their chosen industry Training
Package. The training may be one
day a week or in blocks
On the job learning which occurs
at one or more workplaces and is
referred to as Structured Workplace
Learning (SWL).
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF VET COURSES?
Opportunities to explore areas of interest which assist
students in making decisions about further study and
work
VET Qualifications are nationally recognised
Students will credit towards traineeships and
apprenticeships
Students can complete SA Certificate of Education
(SACE) whilst completing their VET qualification
Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) increases
opportunities for employment. The skills and knowledge
gained whilst completing the work placement are what
employers want.
WHAT IS ADELAIDE HILLS AND
MURRAYLANDS PATHWAYS (AHMPS)?
AHMPs is the name given to a group of member
schools in the Adelaide Hills and Murraylands who work
together to provide Vocational Education and Training
(VET) and Industry Pathway Program (IPP) opportunities
for their students incorporating the Adelaide Hills Trade
Training Centre and the Lower Murray Trade
Training Centre.
CAN DOING VET HELP ME GET MY
SOUTH AUSTRALIAN CERTIFICATE OF
EDUCATION (SACE)?
Yes! Successful completion of a VET course will count
towards your SACE. The value of each course, including
whether it counts as Stage1 or 2, and the number of SACE
Credits, is determined by the SACE Board. Completed
VET Certificate 3 qualifications can contribute towards an
Australian Tertiary Admission Rank.
Check out the SACE Board website
(www.sace.sa.edu.au) for further information.
Discuss your SACE and future study requirements with
your school.
Go to the website www.ahmps.com.au to find out further
information about the course you have selected including:
Step 2:
• Cost • Contact Person • When it is being offered • Where it is being offered • What you need to wear • What you will be studying
• How it counts towards your SACE • If it is on the Adelaide Hills Trade Training Centre Bus run

WILL DOING A VET COURSE AFFECT OTHER SUBJECTS?
Time out of school to complete your course or on a structured work
placement means you will need to work closely with your subject teachers
to ensure your other studies are not disadvantaged.
WHAT IS AN INDUSTRY PATHWAYS PROGRAM?
Industry Pathways Programs (IPPs) have been developed in partnership with
industry. This has ensured that VET competencies being offered in a course
provide pathways to a range of occupations within an industry area. This
can be via traineeships and apprenticeships or further study at Certificate
3 level or higher.
IPPs can also provide credit towards the compulsory elements of SACE.
This includes Literacy and Numeracy, Personal Learning Plan (PLP) and
Research Project. For further information in this area speak with your VET or
SACE Coordinator.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STRUCTURED
WORKPLACE LEARNING (SWL) AND WORK EXPERIENCE?
Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) enables students to gain specific skills
on-the-job. The school and participating employer agree on these skills or
competencies beforehand. The skills reflect nationally-recognised, industry
defined competency standards, which have been developed by Industry
training bodies. A student’s time in SWL as part of their VET course can
contribute to their SACE.
Work Experience offers student a general taste of the world of work.
Students observe different aspects of the work carried out and assist with
tasks nominated by their supervisor or employer.
HOW WILL I APPLY TO BE IN A VET COURSE?
Selecting a VET course will be done through your school’s course counselling
process. Your school will assist you in selecting a course that will fit your SACE
pattern. The school will then collect information from you to enable it to
complete your VET application online through the AHMPs website. You will
then be advised as to whether you will be required to attend an interview
or complete an additional course specific application.
Applications are finalised by the middle of Term 4 and you will be notified of
the outcome. If you are unsuccessful your school will assist you in identifying
alternative. Priority will be given to students from AHMPs member schools.
For information on applying for AHMPs course from a non member school
go to www.ahmps.com.au
WHAT ARE SCHOOL-BASED APPRENTICESHIPS?
Australian School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships allow you to train
and do paid work in an industry area while you are still at school studying
for your SACE.
For more information on ASbAs speak with your VET Coordinator or
Apprenticeship Broker or go to
www.tradeschoolsforthefuture.sa.edu.au
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST ME?
The cost of the course varies. The cost includes training and any associated
consumables. In most cases, the training cost will be met by your school
but the cost of consumables, site visits and uniform will be met by families.
Students who withdraw before completion of a VET course may be charged
the full cost of the course. Check with your school for more detail.
WHAT IF I CHANGE SCHOOLS BEFORE OR DURING MY
VET COURSE?
If you change schools before your VET course starts, then the school you
are leaving is not obliged to pay for your VET course. You may lose your
place unless you can negotiate for your new school to pay or you can
pay yourself.
If you change schools in the middle of the course then the school you are
leaving may seek reimbursement for the cost they have incurred. This may
be from you or your new school.
The cost of the course varies. The cost includes training and any
