Animal Studies<br />

This short course is delivered by Gilles Plains TafeSA and offered in<br />

the Adelaide Hills in partnership with Cleland Wildlife Park and in<br />

the Murraylands in partnership with Monarto Zoological Park. The<br />

course provides students with an entry level qualification to the<br />

Animal Care Industry. The course content is a mixture of theory and<br />

practical application including; preparing for work in the animal<br />

industry, basic animal behaviour, basic animal health and nutrition,<br />

occupational health and safety in the animal industry and workplace<br />

communication.<br />

Practical activities include observing animal behaviour, grooming,<br />

animal handling, cleaning and feeding. The course includes 2<br />

field trips. Employment opportunities include working in veterinary<br />

clinics, pet shops, boarding kennels, animal welfare organisations,<br />

biomedical research and production facilities, horse stables and<br />

wildlife parks.<br />

Horse Management<br />

This short course has been specifically designed to cater for students<br />

seeking an introduction to the Horse Industry as a career option<br />

which may include general horse husbandry, racing, breeding and<br />

various horse related industries such as feed, saddlery and veterinary.<br />

Students do not need to be able to ride horses but can gain extra<br />

SACE credits if they fulfil specified riding criteria.<br />

Students will complete competencies from the Racing<br />

(Stablehand) qualifications and will be required to<br />

complete work placement.<br />

and learn new knowledge about how to grow vegetables and<br />

plants at the correct time of the year, using the correct soils and<br />

equipment? Then Amenity Horticulture is the course that you are<br />

looking for.<br />

Students are up skilled with the appropriate skills to meet the needs of<br />

the various sectors within the horticultural industry. The competencies<br />

are designed to develop the student’s generic workplace skills which<br />

are highly valued by employers.<br />

This full year course is practically based with many opportunities in<br />

the College and the local area to utilise the skills and knowledge<br />

gained. The course provides students with pathways that can lead<br />

into a variety of career areas.<br />

Rural Operations<br />

The Rural Operations course has been developed to allow students<br />

to gain skills in animal handling, soil management as well as in<br />

production horticultural and viticultural enterprises.<br />

This course will include competencies from Certificate 2 in Rural<br />

Operations with the aim of improving student’s knowledge and<br />

employment opportunities in rural and primary industries. Students<br />

will cover topics including, safe work practices, managing livestock,<br />

chemical safety, horticulture, harvesting, soil/growing media and<br />

basic machinery and equipment.<br />

Practical application involves students in the operation of the<br />

school’s 10 hectare farm with sheep, cattle, goats and poultry in<br />

addition to an apple orchard and a vineyard. Students have access<br />

to facilities and equipment including sheep and cattle handling<br />

facilities, a newly constructed winery/apple processing building and<br />

an agricultural laboratory as well as industry standard tractors.<br />
