With the future of <strong>Amiga</strong> in doubt, its original<br />

creator, Jay Miner, passed away on June 20<br />

in California. His litelong kidney problems<br />

finally took his Ide.<br />

Seen as the Father of the <strong>Amiga</strong>. Jay had<br />

a long and accomplished career - he helped<br />

design the Atari VCS games console and<br />

was an integral member of the team that created<br />

the original <strong>Amiga</strong> chipset<br />

His later achievements included the<br />

Atari Lynx. an under-rated handheld that<br />

today, in terms of technological excellence,<br />

outshines its portable counterparts in the<br />

market.<br />

tommunicator II<br />

Only a few months after the release of the<br />

Communicator, the Netherland-based<br />

company Eureka have announced the<br />

imminent arrival of its sequel - the<br />

Communicator II.<br />

The original hardware allowed the connection<br />

of the CD32 to any <strong>Amiga</strong> and PC. By<br />

using the CD32 as a serial 2-way CD-ROM<br />

drive, multimedia presentations including<br />

WV (through the use of the FMV cartridge),<br />

Photo CO's and audio can be controlled and<br />

created.<br />

The Mark II version improvements include<br />

an extra keyboard plug for A2000/3000, a<br />

serial cable that is now a DB25 serial to<br />

RJ10 plug and a new casing design.<br />

Extra software has also been introduced<br />

from Mediapoint that aids audio and video<br />

control to a variety of PD titles.<br />

The Communicator II costs approximately<br />

E99 and will be reviewed in next months<br />

FleHidump upgraded<br />

and improued<br />

Care Electronics, makers of Flexidump 3,<br />

have released an enhanced veision of the<br />

program which the company claims can<br />

remove banding and white lines from all dot<br />

matrix and bubble jet printers. The company<br />

says that ribbon life is extended and print<br />

quality is very consistent.<br />

The new system, called "shingling,* adds<br />

to the recent additions of dithering and<br />

anti-abasing in the latest version. Anyone<br />

with Flexidump 3 that doesn't include the<br />

"shingling" option can upgrade free of<br />

charge.<br />

To combat the tedium of BBS login screens, a group of<br />

Sysops (system operators] have decided to create<br />

MAXIink. a networking bulletin board, The idea behind<br />

the scheme is once a user has joined and all their<br />

details have been taken, the data is passed on to all the<br />

other MAXIM BBS.<br />

This in turn provides instant membership to all the<br />

bulletin boards under the MAXiink banner and saves<br />

extended warranty on its products,<br />

including games consoles, with the<br />

launch of "SilicaCare".<br />

The scheme provides repair and<br />

replacement of parts, including major<br />

hardware such as hard drives and monitor<br />

The Digital Gallery is a new concept being put forward<br />

by PLINECO which allows magazine readers to send<br />

their computer generated artwork in for inclusion on a<br />

four hour video.<br />

Presented as a slideshow. artists - part-time or otherwise<br />

- can submit their work with a E20 fee and have the<br />

opportunity to show off the fruits of their labour to the<br />

public.<br />

With the continual enlarging of CompuServe's facilities,<br />

this month sees the introduction of the on-line service<br />

UK Professionals Forum, which focuses on the needs of<br />

key professional groups in Britain.<br />

legal, medical, engineering, linancial, marketing and<br />

media professions. The various fields are catered<br />

for via the use of message sections and libraries<br />
