<strong>Audi</strong> ultra<br />

<strong>Audi</strong> ultra:<br />

Every gram less extends the lead.<br />

<strong>Audi</strong> ultra, the pioneering lightweight technology<br />

from <strong>Audi</strong>, is more than just the sum of its individual<br />

components. It combines innovative materials,<br />

intelligent design principles and production processes<br />

that use resources sparingly into an overall concept.<br />

Many <strong>Audi</strong> ultra lightweight measures have already<br />

been implemented in the <strong>A3</strong> models.<br />

That starts with the body. The steel shell design<br />

of the vehicle combines low weight with high<br />

rigidity. Which type of material is used in which<br />

place on the vehicle is determined by the desired<br />

<strong>Audi</strong> ultra on the podium: the <strong>Audi</strong> R18 ultra<br />

characteristics. The resulting material mix of<br />

hot- and cold-formed metal panels and profiles<br />

in the vehicle body create an ultra-modern<br />

lightweight structure. But not only ultra highstrength<br />

steels are employed, light aluminium<br />

is also used to reduce the weight of attachment<br />

parts such as the bonnet and wings. The<br />

aluminium components on the front axle and<br />

the aluminium alloy wheels not only reduce the<br />

overall weight but also the unsprung masses,<br />

which in turn leads to a further increase in agility<br />

and driving comfort.<br />

The fuel consumption and CO₂ emission figures can be found from page 118 onwards.<br />

Drive technologies such as direct fuel injection<br />

and turbocharging have always made <strong>Audi</strong><br />

engines more powerful. Modern TDI and TFSI<br />

engines produce more power with a smaller engine<br />

size, making them lighter than the corresponding<br />

engines used in earlier model series.<br />

Each lightweight component has an effect on<br />

other components, allowing their dimensions to<br />

be reduced as well. Here, the lightweight body<br />

and lighter engines lead to secondary effects<br />

throughout the vehicle. The weight of many parts<br />

of the exhaust system, suspension and interior<br />

has been able to be reduced. This complete<br />

package of measures for the <strong>A3</strong> models saved up<br />

to 90 kg compared with the predecessor models.<br />

The result of the <strong>Audi</strong> ultra measures is a<br />

continuous development process towards less<br />

and less weight and more and more efficiency.
