FOCUS ON
THE UK
This chapter covers the
prices paid in the UK by
all travellers. It shows that
hotel guests in 2012 paid
an average 4% less for
their hotel rooms across
the country to a national
rate of £100 a night with
prices flat or falling in 32
of the 41 destinations
covered by the report. 2012
was officially declared the
wettest on record for the
UK and this would have
discouraged visitors from
visiting many seaside
locations.
St Andrews retained its
position at the top of the
price chart on £135, in spite
of a 12% drop, the highest
of all UK towns and cities
included. Jersey shared
the same percentage fall
with its rates dropping to
an average £98. The cost
of air travel to the island
went up this year which
deterred some visitors and
hotels dropped their rates
at the start of the summer
season to compensate.
Another Scottish city
had the second highest
drop rate with rates
in Perth falling 11% to
£65. The average cost
paid for a room in the
Yorkshire seaside town
of Scarborough fell 9% to
£57, the second lowest
level in the chart, and the
cathedral city of Durham
slid 8% to £71. Two cities
tied on a 6% fall with
Cambridge at £97 and
Newcastle-upon-Tyne
at £74. In this latter case,
the fact that Newcastle
football team were playing
in Europe for much of the
