Top overseas
destinations for UK
travellers
Paris ousted New York
from its No 1 slot as the
most popular overseas
destination for the first
time as more UK travellers
chose to stay closer to
home in 2012.
There was one newcomer
with Budapest entered
the chart at No 20 as
Singapore dropped out of
the running.
Dublin was the fastest
riser, climbing five places to
No 3, with Madrid at No 10
and Istanbul at No 16, both
up four.
Hong Kong lost popularity,
sliding five places to
No 18, with Venice and
Prague both down four
places to No 12 and No 19
respectively.
All five US destinations
in the chart lost ground,
perhaps as a result of
rising prices in the country.
As well as New York, San
Francisco at No 11 and
Orlando at No 13 both
dropped one slot each, Las
Vegas fell two to No 5 and
Los Angeles three to No 14.
Apart from Bangkok which
was up two slots to No 15,
it was primarily European
destinations with their
falling prices, such as
Barcelona and Brussels
that rose to fill the gaps.
Top UK destinations
for overseas travellers
There was virtually no
change in the table of
top UK destinations for
overseas travellers with
the first nine holding onto
their 2011 places. The only
newcomer was Aberdeen
taking over from Oxford at
No 10.
It is hardly surprising that
London held onto its No 1
position as 2012 was such
a momentous year for the
capital as it celebrated the
Diamond Jubilee and the
Olympic Games.
