Of the places lucky enough to see their rates climb, Belfast was up 10% to £73. This made the city the fastest riser in the report as it benefitted from the Titanic centenary and the opening of the iconic Belfast Titanic museum, located on the slipways where the liner was built. Rates in Aberdeen were up 9% to £93, driven by midweek demand from the buoyant energy sector. Companies have seen tax breaks resulting in more offshore activity which led to more training and conferences coming to the area. Southampton saw its rates grow, partly as a result of the high number of visitors to the P&O Cruises 175th anniversary Grand Event in July which helped to increase the city’s average by 7% to £73. As the City of Derry prepares for its place as the first UK City of Culture in 2013, it has already seen its hotel prices rise by 2% to £68.
