Stories of conservation<br />

1. The 1,300-acre East Sandusky Bay Nature<br />

Preserve in Huron, established by the Trust for<br />

Public <strong>Land</strong>, the Sandusky/Erie County Community<br />

Foundation, the Ohio Department of Natural<br />

Resources, Erie MetroParks and The Nature<br />

<strong>Conservancy</strong>, protects a three-mile stretch of<br />

sensitive wetlands.<br />

4. The 1,018-acre Babcock farm near Wellington,<br />

which was established in 1832, has been<br />

permanently preserved with a conservation easement<br />

held by <strong>Western</strong> <strong>Reserve</strong> <strong>Land</strong> <strong>Conservancy</strong>.<br />

6. More than 100 species of<br />

birds, including sand hill cranes,<br />

egrets and bald eagles, can be<br />

found at the Lorain County Metro<br />

Parks Sandy Ridge Reservation<br />

in North Ridgeville.<br />

7. More than 80% of the 101-mile Ohio & Erie Canal<br />

Towpath Trail between Cleveland and Dover has been<br />

completed. Partners include the Cuyahoga Valley National<br />

Park, four county park districts – Cleveland Metroparks,<br />

Metro Parks, Serving Summit County, Stark County Park<br />

District and Tuscarawas County Parks Department — and<br />

two founding organizations, the Ohio Canal Corridor and<br />

Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition.<br />

2. The 32-acre Erie Sand<br />

Barrens State Nature Preserve<br />

in Erie County is made up of the<br />

sandy beach ridges of glacial<br />

Lake Warren, a predecessor to<br />

modern Lake Erie.<br />

5. The Medina County Park District’s 248-acre<br />

Alderfer-Oenslager Wildlife Sanctuary and Wolf<br />

Creek Environmental Center was created by a<br />

family donation, one made with the stipulation that<br />

the land be used for environmental education with<br />

an emphasis on programming for children.<br />

8. MetroParks, Serving Summit County and the<br />

Trust for Public <strong>Land</strong> worked together to preserve<br />

Springfield Bog, a 256-acre property filled with<br />

fragile plants and kettle bogs, when the land was<br />

targeted for development.<br />

3. The 419-acre Cleveland<br />

Lakefront State Park, which<br />

includes Edgewater Park (shown),<br />

features sand beaches, picnic<br />

areas and panoramic views.<br />

9. Brothers Leo and Garry Summers of Stark<br />

County worked with <strong>Western</strong> <strong>Reserve</strong> <strong>Land</strong><br />

<strong>Conservancy</strong> to donate conservation easements<br />

totaling 245 acres. The land has been in the family<br />

for five generations, and the original homestead<br />

deed is signed by President James Madison.<br />
