Introducing awe rapt in awe rapt in awe is a collection of anecdotes, inspired insights, poems, and philosophical ramblings. It traces between certain de-‐ finitive experiences in my life, connecting the dots between me-‐ being-‐me as a living breathing body and me-‐being-‐me as a complex energetic field of awareness. Anyone’s life can be retrospectively sketched by drawing together similar definitive moments, experiences that have taken us outside of a conven-‐ tional understanding of who, and what, we are. The stories that I share within these pages chart the course of my personal interior exploration. The philosophy leans heavily on poetic metaphor, not following much of a linear logical progression. Paradox and free-‐ association are employed quite liberally within the lines and pages that follow. With this in mind, when my tangents seem too abstract, I encourage you to simply let go of trying to understand. It has been a consistent experience for me that understanding comes when we simply make space for personal insight and interpretation. Paradoxically, this involves letting go of grasping for understanding. The random connections that I draw between very diverse fields came to me by means of spontaneous insight. This happened by making space in mind for comprehension to follow. Holding a question in mind can very simply pierce the rigid confines of reason to better access intuitive insight. This book is built upon the types of questions that we all ask about the nature of life and our personal purpose for being alive. There is a place where we can all access these answers and I like to refer to this state as a unified field where our minds merge. This book has emerged from a definitive instant in my life, an experience that punctured the membrane of my material sense of self as a series of cells forming tissues contained within my skin. It was an opportunity for me to see beyond the confines of my mind, the bricks of materialistic outlooks that I constructed to reduce and define the world around me. There was a time where I 9
apt in awe ardently believed that there was nothing more to life than our biological selves taking a few spins around the sun before our molecules moved on to some other mechanical process. That has changed. The story about how follows. I share a series of personal anecdotes with the intention of tracing my personal evolution and development, as I have matured with experience and reflection. With this I maintain that each path remains very unique and distinct, and any common threads are for you to draw, not for me to push or project. The catalytic experience that lead to this book did not make me abandon my scientific toolbox and embrace evangelical born again-‐ness. Rather putting the pieces of me back together again taught me to integrate both into a more rich and complete relationship with the world around me. This is what I mean by personal transformation. At a time in my life when I felt on top of the world a string of incidents shook me to my core and wore down my stubborn resistance. A near drowning while whitewater kayaking on a burly river set me into a reflexive place. Being held down in a powerful vortex of water to the point of letting go of any hope of resurfacing scared me deeply. This fear translated in a lot of personal exploration. A little more than a month later while driving on a windy road following a river canyon a sudden intuition guided me to pullover before entering train overpass. This hunch turned a potential high speed, head-‐on collision into a minor accident instead. This precognition thankfully saved me from a nasty incident, and deepened the reflection. Having spent a lot of time in the mountains I had developed a frame of reference for such intuition in the context of climbing, learning to heed a sense or feeling and make decisions based on such a hunch. But I had not integrated this level of trust in intuition into my every day awareness. I will go deeper into this pivotal point later on. After the near drowning and near nasty accident, I had a lingering feeling that something was going to happen, until finally it did.
