Revelations of Awe 45 rapt in awe Each of us has profound capacities for the most ecstatic joy. As human beings we are wired for bliss. A harmonic symphony of brain waves will dish out a luminous sense of absolute awe, if we can only attune ourselves to the sympathetic vibration of cosmic elation. I am pretty interested in this, a curiousity that started with a random revelation of awe – the clear recognition that I can inter-‐ act with the universe at large. As I fire out labels and words to be associated with various experiences, I risk the skewed response of interpretation. Thus I invite you to participate in a reflective exer-‐ cise with the hope that you will have an experiential frame of reference for what I am going on about here. Think back on a time in your life where all things merged into a sense of utter per-‐ fection, where you were at complete ease and acceptance with yourself and the world around you. Perhaps it was in the midst of innocent childhood play, or in the calm presence of nature, maybe it was the luminous feeling of love and being loved. I believe that each of us has direct access to what I am calling awe, and that this experience may become easily overlooked due to rational refer-‐ encing and/or dogmatic devotional attachments. It is easy for us to overlook these experiences if they are not accounted for easily within our prevalent worldviews. These worldviews also shape the lens of interpretation of these personal experiences of awe. Ultimately each of us is either open or closed to the awe in each moment. This is the challenge brought by a self-‐reflexive consciousness in each instant. Being open to the awe makes us an agent of evolving cosmic consciousness. Whereas referencing fixed identity constructs such as rigid rational reductionist rules or dug in devotional dogma, inhibits the free-‐flow of cosmic energy to be in-‐formed by novelty. 22 Thus I believe the task of being human is the recognition and maintenance of this state of open-‐ 22 Novelty refers to innovative new structures of thought or form. I will craft this monologue as an invitation for dialogue, attempting to invoke broader conversations that will facilitate the emergence of novel structures, by looking at some diverse realms of inquiry. rapt in awe explores the cosmological implications of the premise that human consciousness interacts with physical reality. On a circular journey we follow both branches of cosmology – that of fundamental science and that of creation myths – bridging the perceived semantic divide between these modes of knowing. rapt in awe then delves into questions around evolution and creation, again blending and bridging the dualism of language. The collective global implications will be examined with poetic precision and other forms of oxymoronic expression, tracing how our collective perspectives on reality do indeed co-‐create our reality. Also rapt in awe will explore the individual ramifications of an evolving cosmic consciousness, presenting how you, and each of us, is impacted directly by an alternative foundational view of being. This text stretches into forecasts and projections of possible directions for an evolving cosmic consciousness. This fifth piece is where the premise of dialogue comes in. Throughout rapt in awe I present some perspectives that have come to me, but it is from dialogue with you that a broader truth can emerge. In my life I have been blessed by living in geographically inspiring places, largely in western and northern Canada. Vast wilderness has been a prevalent view that has helped shape me physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. It has been in such wild places that I have routinely accessed this intimate sense of awe, dissolving the sense of a separate-‐self and merging with the medium in the moment. It was philosophy by foot. After my accident I found it harder to escape like this, and I have been trying to better integrate into the world of others.
