Understanding exists in a far-‐off field – I’ll see you there. 17 rapt in awe All life is a fluid interaction of energy. Structure is static, a rigid grid that does not really resemble the lay of the land, but rather an interpretive tool dreamed up by Euclid. Our minds constantly quantify by judging and attaching value to our thoughts. Each of us has our own static beliefs about ourselves, and the world outside of our skin. Attachment to these beliefs is like standing on the banks of the river of life as it flows by. The primary challenge we face each moment is letting go of our mind’s judgments to be fluid with the wider environment. That goes to say that comprehension does not arrive by thought, but by intuitive acceptance. Once the mind sits back, open and not attached to any particular perceptual projections, understanding trickles and, filling the void. All religious traditions tend to blend in their mystical realms, the differences are merely a reflection of semantics. Words are truly crude tools towards a common understanding. What the sayers, sages, seers, and saints all say — in their own way— is that by transcending the limiting projections of mind we can intimately interact with the wider world and slip headlong into bliss. This hereby is the process of unwinding the mind.
apt in awe My mountain methodology When I was 16 I sat in my room trying to conceptualize practical applications of Einstein’s theory of general relativity. I thought all this traveling at the speed of light in deep space stuff was pretty cool but wondered how it influenced me down here on the ground? My two adventurous older brothers then came in, compassionately trying to keep me both well rounded and remotely grounded, and invited me to go rock climbing with them. After a barrage of excuses created from me only seeing the obstacles I finally agreed. I was the kind of kid who asked a lot of questions: Why? Why? Why? Why was I reading about Einstein’s theory of general relativity at 16 rather than building a hot-‐rod in the garage like many of my peers? That is perhaps the perennial question that this book explores. How do we, as individuals, either choose or simply follow a path of character, calling and discovery in our lives? Are we guided by internal aspects or by forces beyond our everyday selves? Is it merely free will? The persistence of the questions ‘Why are we here?’ ‘ What does this all mean?’ ‘What is my purpose in life?’ have echoed in my mind from my earliest recognition. I don’t believe that I am alone in this questioning. It was somewhere on the side of a cliff, that first time rock climbing, when I finally let go of fearing gravity’s grasp and focused fully on the possibilities inherent to the rock. Suddenly the warm wind of clear understanding washed over me. To go upward I had to let go of holds that felt solid and secure and simply trust those above which held uncertainty, and find a way to orient myself through funky movements on seemingly precarious perches. I found out, then and there, that the body has its own logic, often more true than that of the rational mind. Time slowed down under the cadence of my breath, as I focused intently on the intricate details of the rock in each movement. Everything merged in the moment. Still holding the ever-‐present questions in the back of my mind during the climb, I also started to see an everyday understanding of relativity. 18
