am a 10-year-+ member of OCR who
I has participated in virtually all the
types of events and activities offered
by our club. However, I have avoided
serious Concours participation for a
series of reasons. Notwithstanding that, I
felt compelled to respond to Joe Nezda’s
call for volunteers to help with judging
this year. So, I drove up the coast to
Circle Porsche on May 24 to attend the
Zone 8 judging class led by Joe.
After sitting through the well
organized and stimulating class,
watching the seasoned judges conduct
a simulated judging session of Joe’s
immaculate 356 Coupe, asking some
questions, and reading through the
newly revised Zone 8 Concours judging
manual, I was declared ready to act as
a judge at the 2008 OCR White Glove
Concours.

A couple evenings before the June
31 event, I re-read the judging manual
and then went out into the garage and laid
down, with a flashlight, and peered under
the front of my 993 and “felt around”
to see where my hand could reach and
fit. [My hands came out covered with
dirt and grease. [Clearly my 993 is not
a full Concours candidate!] My guess,
that proved correct, was that Joe would
assign a long-armed rookie to the Full
Concours team as the non-engineunderside
judge because it is arguably
the least complicated area, and besides,
rookies should start at the bottom and
work their way up (My thought, not
his).
I was surprised and am delighted to
say, I really had fun during my judging
experience. There was a very nice feeling
of a team effort and the camaraderie

that goes with that. Also, it was a great
chance to get up close and personal with
some really wonderful cars and to meet
some folks I probably would not have
met otherwise.
Thinking back on this experience,
I wish I had volunteered to become a
judge years ago because I have missed
numerous opportunities to participate
and have even more fun than I have had.
I still don’t think I will become a serious
Concours contestant, but I hope to be
asked to judge in the future because it is
fun and very interesting.
It is amazing to me that after more
than 10 years of participation in OCR,
I just found a new and different way to
be involved, learn additional skills, and
have even more fun.
As someone smarter than me said,
“You get out of this what you put into it!”
