August 2008 Topless at the Beach... The White Gloves Concours

May 17th was a nice warm day.
Members of the Orange Coast
Region (OCR) gathered at our usual
stop, Krispy Kremes, where sugar from
the donuts fueled our adrenaline. After
we had cleaned the sticky residue off our
fingers, we fired up the engines in our
Porsches and caravanned to Dynamic
Air on Dyer Road in Santa Ana. This was
the location that was selected by our tech
session host: Moe Mistry of Glistening
Perfection for his presentation; and it
was perfect. We had ample parking for
our cars and welcome shade over our
heads, provided by a wonderful large
rubber tree. The location couldn’t have
been better for the 48 people and 31 cars
that made it to the session.
The session started off with a
Continental-style (with a few additions)
breakfast. The bagels, lox, bacon,
sausage, coffee and other drinks were
consumed on top of the sugar filled
donuts that some had eaten at KK. After
our second breakfast, we all returned
to the shade of the tree and were well
schooled by Moe. This gentleman
knows what he is doing. Moe was the
detailer on the Best of Show winner at
the Pebble Beach Concours in 2005,
which is a pretty good pedigree.
Moe pointed out that there is no
standard for detailers and that some have
been known to destroy the paint on your
car by “burning” the paint using improper
methods or tools. Moe even stated that
in the past even he has “burned” the paint
twice, but he is bonded for a sufficient
amount to completely cover the repairs/
repaint. How many detailers are actually
bonded? I don’t think most detailers of
our vehicles can say that. They may be
okay for the grocery-getting car, but we
have investments in our Porsches.
Moe stated that he uses a technique
that he calls “Trinity” which he uses for
(a) Clay treatment (b) Polish and (c) Wax.
The clay treatment is used to prepare the
surface, the polish to smooth out, and the
wax to protect the surface. The clay is
always applied by hand and he uses two
of his senses to make sure the treatment
is performed correctly. Those senses
are feel and sound. Yes, he can actually
hear the clay going to work! The polish
is then applied with a powered polish
machine that must be selected and used
with care to avoid the “burning” of the
paint mentioned previously. He uses the
Flex XC3401 VRG rather than the Porter
Cable polisher some of you might own.
This is a new technology and provides
the best option between the Porter Cable
and a rotary polisher.
The final step of the process is the
application of the wax, which is done
by hand. The available waxes are each
unique in qualities, composition, and
also price; there is even a wax available
for $30,000! The wax should bring out
the color and reflect the smoothness
achieved in the previous two steps, and it
also protects the finish. The end product
of this type of detailing is a car that you

and others will see and appreciate for its
beauty.
Moe is an excellent speaker. He
answered all of the questions from the
audience readily, giving us very useful
information. He is also a supporter of
our club and he is an advertiser in the

do the detailing to a very high standard
