THE KING OF THE NORTH AT JERUSALEM
The book of Daniel commences with the historic reference to the invasion of Judea and the
overthrow of Jerusalem, the destruction of the temple of God, and the taking of the vessels from the house
of God to the house and service of the gods of Babylon. See Daniel 1: 1, 2. In harmony with the law of
“Repeat and Enlarge,” we see that throughout the book of Daniel, Jerusalem, the temple of God, and the
“perils, conflicts and deliverance” of the people of God are constantly the center and the circumference.
The mention of other powers is merely to point out their enmity to God, His truth, and His people
“The final deliverance of the people of God” (Great Controversy, Page 341), to which the
prophecies of Daniel and John point, is foreshadowed in the earlier deliverance recorded in the book of
Daniel. In his rage at being frustrated of complete dominion, Nebuchadnezzar with boasting said to the
three faithful Hebrews, who typify the people of the Third Angel’s Message “Who is that God that shall
deliver you out of my hands?” (Daniel 3: 15). The faithful three trusted in the God of Israel to deliver them,
and the covenant-keeping God walked with them in the fiery furnace, and “delivered” them. The double, or
repeated and enlarged, application of this experience refers to the last days, when the people of God-the
people of the Third Angel’s Message who refuse to bow down to the spiritual image of the beast
(Revelation 13, 14, etc.)-will be thrown into times of unparalleled peril; but Jesus, by His angels, will walk
with them in the world-wide, spiritual, fiery furnace and will “deliver” them from their spiritual Babylonian
enemies. Thus we see the connection between the deliverance of the three Hebrews, brought to view in
Daniel 3, and the deliverance of God’s world-wide, spiritual Hebrews, mentioned in Daniel 12: 1.
In the sixth chapter of Daniel is recorded another instance of deliverance pointing to “the final
deliverance of the people of God.” The plot of Daniel’s enemies to persuade the king to pass a law
necessitating a choice between obedience to God’s Law or the law of the State, will be repeated and
enlarged in its double application when the apostate churches seek government aid to enforce Sunday laws.
As the king did not see the subtlety behind the request of Daniel’s enemies, so many lawmakers will not
discern the cunning behind the appeal to the State to pass laws which will bring spiritual Israel into times of
extreme peril. After passing through a night of supreme trust in God, Daniel was “delivered” (see Daniel
6:14, 16, 20, 27) from his peril: similarly, spiritual, world-wide Israel, after being plunged into a period of
affliction and distress necessitating implicit trust in their God, will be “delivered” (Daniel 12: 1) at the time
of the 6th plague.
As the deliverance recorded in the earlier chapters of Daniel point forward to “the final
deliverance of the people of God,” so do the other recorded experiences concerning Jerusalem, its temple,
and its people point forward to their repetition and their “final” counterpart in the last days. The forces of
Babylon that brought peril and disaster to Jerusalem and its temple are repeatedly declared in the book of
Jeremiah (a book which Daniel studied in connection with his visions, see Daniel 9: 2) to come from “the
north.” See Jeremiah 1: 13, 14, 15; 4: 6; 6: 1; 25: 9, 26; etc. “The king of the north” refers to the king of
spiritual Babylon who, in the last days, will lead his forces in Satan’s “final” assault upon the city and
people of God.
13. WHO IS DELIVERED AT THE TIME THE END?
The answer to these questions vitally affects and determines our interpretation of the closing
verses of Daniel 11. Shall we follow the Futuristic system of interpretation? Or the teaching of the New
Testament? Concerning those “delivered” (Daniel 12: 1), those who follow the Futuristic system declare:
“Thy people-That is, Daniel’s people the Jews. Cf. Daniel 9: 15. 16, 20, 24; 10: 14” - Scofield’s Bible.
Now, it must be admitted that in the verses quoted by Scofield. the terms “thy people” and “my people”
undoubtedly refer to the literal Jews. How then, can we apply the same term in Daniel 12: 1 to spiritual
Israelites? There is not the slightest intimation in the verse itself of any change over from literal, Palestinian
Jews to world-wide, spiritual Jews. Surely some principle must operate to determine that a verse which
would naturally be understood in the same literal sense as previous verses, where the same term is
employed, be interpreted in connection with spiritual Jews? How do we explain this “spiritualizing” of the
Scriptures? By principles that are employed throughout the New Testament.
The New Testament plainly declares that the church is now “the Israel of God” (Galatians 6:16,
etc.), and is the inheritor of all the “things” of Israel. The servant of the Lord has declared: “We are
numbered with Israel all the promises of blessing through obedience, are for us” – “Ministry of Healing,” p.
405. “The Israel of to-day the true church.” “Spiritual Israel-His church on earth.” Prophets and Kings,
