THE KING OF THE NORTH AT JERUSALEM
portrayed in the Revelator’s graphic depiction of the final conflict.
God’s people are urged to study “to understand the progress of events in the marshalling of the
nations for the final conflict of Me great controversy” (8 Testimonies, Page 307). God’s people should
know that “already the inhabitants of the earth are marshalling under the leading of the prince of darkness
The Law of God is made void!” (8 Testimonies, Page 49).
In the “Great Controversy,” pp. 561, 562, we are given the correct interpretation of the work of
evil spirits in “gathering” “the kings of the earth and of the whole world to the battle of that great day of
God Almighty”:
“Satan has long been preparing for his final effort to deceive the world ... He has not yet reached
the full accomplishment of his designs; but it [Satan deceiving the world to join him in his rebellion against
God’s Law] will be reached in the last remnant of time. Says the prophet: “I saw three unclean spirits like
frogs . . . they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of
the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty’ (Revelation 16: 13, 14).
Except those who are kept by the power of God, through faith in His Word, the whole world will be swept
into the ranks of this delusion. The people are fast being lulled into a fatal security, to be awakened only by
the outpouring of the wrath of God.”
Thus we see that the Lord interprets the “gathering” of the nations to Armageddon and “the whole
world” being deceived into joining the “ranks” of the forces of evil; they “unite with Satan in his last
struggle against the government of Heaven.” Satan has been deceiving mankind for a “long” time; he wants
“to deceive the world. He has not yet reached the full accomplishment of his designs; but it will be
reached” by the time of the battle of Armageddon. As by the 6th plague “the whole world” is said to be
“gathered” by miracle-working spirits who have deceived earth’s multitudes, and that is “the full
accomplishment of his designs,” and as that work of deception is said to be the gathering or uniting of “the
kings of the earth and of the whole world,” the “gathering” must already be in progress; “already the
inhabitants of the earth are marshalling under the leading of the prince of darkness.” The “gathering”
pictured in Revelation 16: 13 does not refer to some sudden military maneuver by nations to Megiddo, but
refers to the culmination of the work of deception carried on through the years by Satan as he prepares to
“unite” the world to “join” him “in his last struggle” against God. By the time of the sixth plague “the
wicked have fully united with Satan in his warfare against God” (Great Controversy, Page 656).
The spirits of evil are “already marshalling” the nations to fight “against the government of.
Heaven”-soon those who make “war” against their Maker and His church will come to their end’, and none
shall help them. “Already” in progress is the gathering of God’s people to be with Christ on Mt. Zion. Right
in the midst of the picture of the gathering of the forces of evil against the Lord and His people, the Savior
proclaims a solemn warning to His people to, watch and keep their garments -see Revelation 16: 15. But
the watching and. the keeping of garments apply now-it will be too late after probation closes to get ready.
It is now before probation closes and: while the evil spirits are gathering the nations to make war against
God and His people that God’s people, too, are to make their preparations. They must now heed the call of
Christ to stand “with Him” on Mt. Zion in the garments of righteousness which He provides, and to be
“chosen” before mercy’s door closes, and, by loyalty to His commands, be proved “faithful” (Revelation
14:1; 17:14). Thus when the gates of “the holy city” are shut for ever and no more sinners will be permitted
to enter into it, the saved “they that do His Commandments” (Revelation 22:14)-will be “within
Jerusalem,” whilst the unsaved will be outside “in the valley of God’s Judgment” (Joel 2:32; chap. 3;
Revelation 22: 15; etc.).
During the Dark Ages, the king of the north, the man of sin, the son of perdition, not only planted
the tabernacles of his palace “in the glorious holy mountain” (2 Thessalonians 2: 3-5), but at that time he
also trod “the holy city” under foot for 1260 years (see Revelation 11: 1, 2). Through His loyal servants in
the work of the Reformation, the Lord caused the king of the north to receive “a deadly wound”
(Revelation 13:3), and thus he withdrew from God’s “holy city.” But the beast has revived; the power of
the king of the north returns, and Satan is waiting the day when he will again hurl all his forces against “the
holy city,” the church. In the Dark Ages “it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to
overcome them” (Revelation 13:7). As this “war” was said to be that of treading under foot “the holy city”
(Revelation 11:2), so the “war” against the remnant (Revelation 12:17) in connection with the enforcement
of Sunday laws is also likened to an attack upon “the holy city” (Daniel 11:44, 45). Then, the king of the
north will again plant his tabernacle outside Jerusalem and prepare “to destroy” it “utterly.” But this time
the Lord will not permit the king of the north, the man of sin, to harm His church. Instead, His unmingled
wrath will be poured out upon the assembled hosts who will be gathered “in the valley of Jehoshaphat”
