THE KING OF THE NORTH AT JERUSALEM
the Jewish economy. It is called Jerusalem, or Zion. Isaiah 62:1, 6, 7; 60:15-20; Galatians 4:26-28;
Hebrews 12: 22. See also Isaiah 60: 6, 7; 66: 23.
“In the same way, the enemies of the kingdom of the Messiah are not only called by the name
given to the enemies of the ancient theocracy, viz., the nations of the Gentiles, but they often bear the name
of some one people, who, at the time, were peculiarly inimical or powerful. In Isaiah 25, they are called by
the name of Moab. In Isaiah 63 and Amos 9:12, by the name of Edom; and in Ezekiel 38, by the name of
Gog ... Nor need this peculiarity of prophetic language excite surprise. It is found pervading the whole
ancient dispensation.”
Seventh-day Adventist students of Scripture will agree that these statements are a clear summary
of the teachings of the whole of the Bible. And by heeding the principle thus expressed there exists among
us a unanimity of opinion respecting the interpretation of Daniel’s prophecies-until we reach the last verses
of Daniel 11. The reason the unity is not maintained in respect to these verses is because those who apply
them in relation to Turkey and Palestine inconsistently omit the application of the principle of type and anti
type which they have maintained throughout the book of Daniel until the last few verses of Daniel 11 are
reached! This appears all the more marked when the same principle of the anti type is again applied in the
very next verse (Daniel 12:1) regarding the term “thy people”-the anti typical, spiritual Israelites! It should
not be forgotten that because Israel and their land are anti typically applied here, so must the other nations
mentioned in connection with them also have their anti typical characteristics-the king of the north, Egypt,
Edom, Moab, the children of Ammon Ethiopia, Libya.
SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTISTS SHOULD NOT FOLLOW
THE FUTURISTIC SYSTEM WHEN INTERPRETING DANIEL 11:45.
The Futuristic system, which is Satan’s counterfeit of the Third Angel’s Message, teaches the
strictly literal interpretation of the prophecies concerning “Israel and the Holy Land.” Scofield’s Bible, p.
918 (notes on Daniel 11), says: “Prophecy does not concern itself with history as such, but only with
history as it affects Israel and the Holy Land.” Accordingly, Futurism interprets Daniel 11 and other
prophecies in relation to Palestine. This is the basic difference between Futurism and our Message. By
reading the notes in Scofield’s Bible, it will be seen that all the prophecies which we as a people apply
spiritually or anti typically, in connection with spiritual Israel in all the world, are applied literally in
relation to Palestine and the Jews. This fact alone should help Seventh-day Adventists to shun the Futuristic
system when interpreting Daniel 11:40-45; Joel 3; Zechariah 14; Ezekiel 38; 39; Revelation 16: 12-16; etc.
THE SPIRIT OF PROPHECY GUIDES IN OUR INTERPRETATION
We are given guidance by the Spirit of Prophecy respecting the interpretation of prophecies
involving Palestine. In Ezekiel 34, under the picture of the flock of God with “one Shepherd over them,”
Israel feeds “upon the high mountains of Israel.” Commenting upon this chapter, the Lord’s servant says:
“Christ applied these prophecies to Himself.” Desire of Ages, Page 477. Referring to Ezekiel’s prophecies
concerning “the mountains of Israel,” the Spirit of Prophecy again declares: “Many and wonderful are the
promises recorded in Scripture regarding the church,” Acts of the Apostles, Page 479. “An earthly shepherd
knows his sheep, so does the divine Shepherd know His flock, that are scattered throughout the world.”
Desire of Ages, Page 479.
Thus the designations, “the land of Israel,” “His land,” “their land,” “the mountains of Israel,” etc.,
now refer to the world-wide kingdom of our Lord, Jesus Christ. In this light we must interpret Daniel
11:45.
16. “THE GLORIOUS HOLY MOUNTAIN.”
It would seem incredible if it were necessary to prove to enlightened Seventh-day Adventists that
Jerusalem, today, could not possibly be designated by the Lord “the glorious holy mountain”: “the sacred
hill so fair” (Moffatt’s Translation). The prophecy does” not state that Jerusalem which was anciently
“holy” will be where the king of the north comes to his end. The prophecy refers to that which will be
glorious and holy at the time the king of the north comes to his end. In the prophecy of Daniel 8 and 9, 70
