THE KING OF THE NORTH AT JERUSALEM
12:1).
While the literal Babylonians were praising their gods, Cyrus and his army – “the kings of the
east” (Isaiah 41:2, 25; 46:11; Jeremiah 51:11, 28) with their allies of the north (Jeremiah 60:41; 51:27, 28) -
having “dried up” the waters of the Euphrates (Isaiah 44: 27; Jeremiah 50: 38; etc.) entered and over thew
the city of Babylon. Daniel’s last prophecy (10 to 12) commences with Cyrus (Daniel 10:1)-Israel’s
deliverer, and the destroyer of her Babylonian oppressors (see Jeremiah 50:33, 34; Isaiah 45:13; etc.).
Again we see the transition from the events associated with the downfall of literal Babylon to the worldwide
events associated with the downfall of modern Babylon (Daniel 11:45; 12:1). Cyrus, whose name
meant “the sun,” is brought to view in the Scriptures as a type of Jesus “the Sun of Righteousness”
(Malachi 4:2). The “double” application of the overthrow of Babylon by Cyrus refers to the coming of
Jesus, the Almighty “Cyrus,” the Shepherd-King (see regarding Cyrus in Isaiah 44:28). The Lord’s
Anointed (see also Isaiah 45:1), the Deliverer of Israel (Daniel 12: 1; Isaiah 45: 13), the One Who bids His
people go free (Luke 4: 18) to worship their God (Isaiah 44: 28; 2 Chronicles 36: 22-23; Ezra 1:1-8).
Daniel 11:44, 45; 12:1 points forward to the time when spiritual Babylon will oppress spiritual
Israel, and the waters of the Euphrates upon which Babylon, the great Whore, sits (Revelation 17:1, 15;
Jeremiah 51:13), will be “dried up” (Revelation 16:12). The 6th plague falls upon the “multitudes”
(Revelation 17:15)-the waters which support the great spiritual Babylonian Whore, and which are about to
slay the saints at the behest of Babylon. In the chapter (40), “God’s People Delivered,” the Lord’s servant
says: “The people of God . . . still plead for divine protection, while in every quarter companies of armed
men, urged on by hosts of evil angels, are preparing for the work of death. It is now, in the hour of utmost
extremity, that the God of Israel will interpose for the deliverance [i.e., Daniel 12:1] of His chosen. The
angry multitudes are suddenly arrested” (Great Controversy, Page 635). Thus God’s servant connects up
the deliverance (Daniel 12:1) of God’s people with the outpouring of the 6th plague. The 6th plague is
poured out upon the Babylonian “multitudes” who are seeking to slay the saints. When the mighty
demonstrations of God’s power are revealed on behalf of His people, the “multitudes” turn and rend their
spiritual advisers--thus the waters of the Babylonian Euphrates will no longer be Babylon’s bulwark and
glory, but serve to bring about her destruction.
The Lord will come to “deliver” His people from their Babylonian oppressors, and take them to
worship God in their native land-the eternal Canaan (Daniel 12: 13). It was to reveal these glorious truths
that God gave Daniel his last prophecy. There is not the slightest suggestion of a great battle to be fought
among the nations as the climax of Daniel’s prophecies. By this teaching Satan seeks to deflect God’s
people from the thrilling truths which are fully enlarged upon in the Spirit of Prophecy. The main burden of
the books of Daniel and Revelation concerns the “dangers, conflicts, and final deliverance of the people of
God.” It was to obtain light upon this important theme that caused! Daniel to fast and pray for three weeks.
This was the theme in the prophecies of chapters 7, 8, 9. There still remained some light to be given on “the
final deliverance” of God’s people. To make this clear, the Lord gave Daniel his last prophecy. The belief
in a military, or Palestinian, “Armageddon” is Satan’s smoke screen behind which he hides the light God
has given on the deliverance of God’s people from their Babylonian persecutors.
21. THE ENFORCEMENT OF SUNDAY LAWS
Daniel 11:45; 12:1 teach that the Papacy will employ all of its powers to destroy “the holy city,”
the church of the living God, but that the Lord will protect His people and destroy their enemies. This is the
teaching of the book of Daniel, the Lord in His Second Advent sermon, and also in the book of Revelation;
it is also the teaching of the Spirit of Prophecy. In Testimonies Volume 5, p. 451 we read:
“As the approach of the Roman armies was a sign to the disciples of the impending destruction of
Jerusalem, so may this apostasy [“the decree enforcing the institution of the Papacy in violation of the law
of God-previous paragraph] be a sign to us that the limit of God’s forbearance is reached and that the angel
of mercy is about to take her flight, never to return. The people of God are in affliction and distress and
trouble. The Judge of all the earth is soon to arise and vindicate His insulted authority. The mark of
deliverance [Daniel 12: 11 will be set upon the men who keep God’s Commandments, who revere His law,
and who refuse the mark of the beast.”
Notice the salient features: “The Roman armies” approach the city, Jerusalem. The Papal Sunday
is to be enforced, probation will close, God’s people will be in “trouble,” their “deliverance” is assured, for
