APPENDIX 4 - Patient conditions unsuitable for day surgery<br />
Anaesthetic<br />
Difficult airway – i.e. large goitre / tumour causing deviation or compression of airway,<br />
restricted neck movement or mouth opening.<br />
Personal or family history of malignant hyperpyrexia.<br />
Previous personal history of previous reaction to anaesthesia – type of reaction should<br />
be assessed and flagged with anaesthetist.<br />
Details of any unexplained, significant morbidity during or after anaesthesia in the patient<br />
or his/her relatives should be noted and discussed with anaesthetist.<br />
Cardiovascular<br />
Poorly controlled blood pressure (BP>170/100)<br />
Congestive cardiac failure<br />
Unstable angina<br />
MI within previous 6 months<br />
Symptomatic valvular heart disease<br />
Patients who have a pacemaker or automotive implantable cardiac defibrillator<br />
Poor exercise tolerance<br />
Respiratory<br />
Poorly controlled asthma needing oral steroids, frequently or within last 3 months,<br />
frequent hospital admission or home oxygen<br />
Poorly controlled COPD<br />
Sleep apnoea<br />
Neurological<br />
Poorly controlled epilepsy<br />
CVA/TIA within the last 1 year<br />
Endocrine<br />
Poorly controlled thyroid disease<br />
Poorly controlled diabetes<br />
Haematological<br />
Coagulopathies, INR>1.5, Platelets
