On behalf of the College of the Canyons Board 

of Trustees, Chancellor, Dr. Dianne Van Hook, and 

Interim Assistant Superintendent of Instruction, 

Joseph Gerda, it is my pleasure to unveil the 

2012-13 season at the Santa Clarita Performing 

Arts Center at College of the Canyons. 

We have put together another great season of 

diverse programming and many new ways to 

Connect with the artists while they are performing 

at COC – either through a master class, meet and 

greet or school bus-in. This year, COC music 

students will also get to perform on stage with 

some of our stars! 

Our venue takes great strides to be the "cultural 

address of the Santa Clarita Valley" and whether you 

are coming to see a COC music, dance or theatre 

production; a COC Presents professional program; 

or one of the community groups such as the Master 

Chorale, Santa Clarita Ballet or the SC Regional 

Theatre that perform on our stage, the entire PAC 

team is committed to making your visit an 

experience you will remember.

Jim Jenkins, Wizard of Kinetic Sculpture 

Feb 5 – Mar 7, 2013 

Artist's Reception: TBA 

Jenkins will be showcasing several pieces 

from the past few years. These are technological 

masterpieces that move, make sound and are often 

humorous. Jenkins is currently the head of 

Cal State Fullerton’s sculpture department and 

is known as one of the best kinetic sculptors 

working today. 

Dinah Sargeant, Fabric Paintings 

Mar 26 – Apr 25, 2013 

Artist Reception: Tue, Mar 26, 5:00pm – 7:00pm 

Sargent is a Santa Clarita resident who could loosely 

described as a quilter, but that description is misleading. 

Her work begins as dyed and painted fabrics and is 

carefully sewn into mysterious and beautiful fabric paintings. 

This exhibition will also feature handmade doll sculpture.

THEATRE 

The College of the Canyons Theatre Department 

offers courses in both theory and practice. It is 

committed to teaching an immediately useful set 

of theatre skills, including acting, script-writing, 

design, technical production and directing while 

providing a wide spectrum of production experiences 

in which to practice them; and to place the 

art of theatre in its larger historical context. The 

theatre program presents theatrical productions 

for the college, community and students. 

DANCE 

The College of the Canyons Dance Department 

is designed to assist in the development of an 

appreciation of dance from both movement 

and non-movement perspectives. The program 

introduces and develops basic, intermediate and 

advanced dance techniques and focuses on 

providing students with exposure to a variety 

of dance styles, techniques and training. The 

program also provides on- and off-campus 

performance activities. Dance classes offered 

include fundamentals of dance, basic ballet, 

modern jazz, world, African, social, tap, 

performance, choreography and yoga. 

MUSIC 

The College of the Canyons Music Department 

offers a broad range of academics, ensembles 

and programs for both students and community 

members. The Symphony of the Canyons plays 

a wealth of classical and romantic music, as well 

as the most recent in contemporary literature. 

Through the Voices of the Canyons, Chamber 

Singers, Just Jazz, House Blend and Les 

Chanteuses ensembles, students learn relevant 

issues concerning performance, practice and 

rehearsal techniques. Voice development/studio 

singing classes emphasize the learning of vocal 

skills while expanding the singer's classical and 

pop repertoires. By becoming a member of the 

Jazz Ensemble, performers get an insight

into the jazz band tradition, as well as diverse contemporary 

popular currents. Other areas 

of study include music technology, music 

composition, an applied music program, as 

well as opportunities for one-on-one lessons. 

K-12 ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAM 

The program uses the college’s vast cultural and 

community resources to expose students to the 

visual and performing arts - while also collaborating 

with teachers and administrators in school 

districts throughout the area to develop an 

enhanced arts education curriculum and a 

variety of unique educational opportunities 

for all students. Among the many goals of the 

program is the promotion of arts education 

teaching and learning strategies, which could 

potentially be passed on from artist to teachers 

in a variety of different settings – including 

workshops, artist classroom visits, special 

presentations, mentor programs and various 

teaching/learning community partnerships – 

to help better communicate the arts to their

This night in September of 1934 is the biggest 

in the history of the Cleveland Grand Opera 

Company. World famous tenor Tito Morelli is to 

perform Otello, his greatest role, at the gala 

season opener. Saunders, the harried General 

Manager, hopes this will put Cleveland on the 

cultural map. Morelli is nowhere to be found; 

when he finally arrives drunk, it is too late for 

any rehearsal. Through a hilarious series of 

mishaps, 'Il Stupendo' is given a double dose of 

tranquilizers which mix with the booze he has 

consumed and he passes out. His pulse is so low 

that Saunders and his assistant Max believe he is 

dead. What to do? Saunders coaxes Max into 

Morelli's costume, intending to fool the audience 

with this fake 'Il Stupendo', blackface and all. 

Nervous amateur Max succeeds admirably, but 

Morelli revives and dresses for his second act. 

With two Otellos now in costume and two 

women en dishabille, each thinking she is 

with 'Il Stupendo', the farce spins out of control 

onstage and off.

About the 

SANTA CLARITA 

PERFORMING ARTS CENTER 

The Venue: 

The $18.3-million facility boasts a spectacular proscenium 

theater with a state-of-the-art sound system and 886 seats, as 

well as an experimental Black Box theatre. Funded by the 

State of California ($15.9 million) and the City of Santa Clarita 

($2.4 million), the center features instructional, community 

and professional entertainment and informational programs. 

Designed with a green room, scene shops, costume and 

property storage, orchestra pit, make-up/dressing room areas, 

lockers, showers, ticket booth and snack bar, the Performing 

Arts Center is a one-of-a-kind performance destination for 

community members in the Santa Clarita Valley. 

Box Office & Patron Services Information: 

The PAC Box Office is located at the venue (north end of Lobby) 

and is accessed from the outside through ticket windows. Hours 

of operation: Monday-Friday 11:30 am-5:30 pm. The PAC Box 

Office will also open two hours prior to show time, except for 

Black Box events which are one hour prior to show time.

Group Sales: 

• 10 to 24 people receive a 10% discount off regular ticket price. 

• 25 to 49 people receive a 15% discount off regular ticket price.

RUSH Tickets: 

A limited number of discounted RUSH tickets for students, 

educators, military personnel, emergency services, and seniors 

(age 60 and above) will be available the evening of specified

additional RUSH ticket information. 

Gift Certificates: 

Gift certificates may be purchased through the Box Office in a 

variety of denominations and are redeemable for COC Presents 

and Arts on Campus (college productions) performances, 

depending on seating available at time of redemption. 

Accessibility: 

The Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center has been constructed 

to accommodate attendance for people with accessibility 

requirements. Accessible seating is available on the main 

floor in the Orchestra seating section of Rows E or P and is 

accessible by an elevator. Please contact the Box Office for 

additional information and to purchase accessible seating.

The Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center is located on the 

College of the Canyons Valencia campus at: 

26455 Rockwell Canyon Road, Santa Clarita, CA 91355 

Directions: 

From the south, take Interstate 5 north to Valencia Boulevard. 

Turn right onto Valencia Boulevard. At the third light (counting the 

off-ramp light) turn right onto Rockwell Canyon Road. Enter the 

college at the electronic marquee situated opposite the Performing 

Arts Center (the fourth parking lot entrance on the right). 

From the north, take Interstate 5 south to Valencia Boulevard 

(just past Magic Mountain). Turn left onto Valencia Boulevard. At 

the fourth light (counting the off-ramp light) turn right onto 

Rockwell Canyon Road. Enter the college at the electronic 

marquee situated opposite the Performing Arts Center (the 

fourth parking lot entrance on the right). 

Parking: 

College of the Canyons has ample parking for all events held on 

its campus. For performances on Monday through Friday 

evenings, parking is not available in Lots 1, 2 or 3 until after 7 

p.m. However, for evening performances Monday through Friday, 

parking is available in Lots 4, 5, 6 or 7 one hour prior to the 

scheduled event time. For performances on Saturday or Sunday, 

parking is available in Lots 1 through 7 starting two hours prior 

to event time and until two hours after the event ends. Please 

keep in mind that Campus Safety personnel will enforce parking 

rules when any car is parked at red curbs, in accessible spaces 

without the proper permit, outside of a designated space, in 

front of a doorway or in a construction site. Please visit the

Black Box Theatre: 

(Theatre located on the northwest end of the PAC). 

The Black Box is a unique “flexible seating” venue featuring new 

and experimental productions. Due to the nature of the venue, 

the exact number of seats available for performances is often not 

known until closer to opening night. Therefore, a limited number 

of seats will be placed on sale at the beginning of the season until 

the exact seating count has been confirmed by the technical staff. 

All seating in the Black Box Theatre is General Admission – on a 

first-come first-served basis. Please contact the Box Office for 

additional information. 

Suitable for Youth: 

Performances throughout the season represent a wide range of 

artistic expression and audience appeal. While many performances 

may be appropriate for younger children, it is always best to read 

the event description and content notes of every performance so 

you can make the best decision for your family and children. 

Children ages 2 and older will require a ticket for entrance. 

Volunteer Ushers: 

We continue to have opportunities for volunteers to serve on 

our Front of House team. As a volunteer, you get to see the 

performance you are ushering and earn credits toward free tickets 

to see upcoming productions! To volunteer, please visit our website
