CAST assembles, interprets, <strong>and</strong> communicates credible<br />

science-based information regionally, nationally, <strong>and</strong><br />

internationally to legislators, regulators, policymakers,<br />

the media, the private sector, <strong>and</strong> the public. CAST is a<br />

nonpr<strong>of</strong>it organization composed <strong>of</strong> scientific societies<br />

<strong>and</strong> many individual, student, company, nonpr<strong>of</strong>it, <strong>and</strong><br />

associate society members. CAST’s Board <strong>of</strong> Directors is<br />

composed <strong>of</strong> representatives <strong>of</strong> the scientific societies <strong>and</strong><br />

an Executive Committee. CAST was established in 1972<br />

as a result <strong>of</strong> a meeting sponsored in 1970 by the National<br />

Academy <strong>of</strong> Sciences, National Research Council.<br />

<strong>The</strong> authors named in each publication are responsible<br />

for the contents. <strong>The</strong> CAST Board <strong>of</strong> Directors is<br />

responsible for the policies <strong>and</strong> procedures followed<br />

in developing, processing, <strong>and</strong> disseminating the<br />

documents produced.<br />

<strong>The</strong> National <strong>Pork</strong> Board has responsibility for<br />

Check<strong>of</strong>f-funded research, promotion <strong>and</strong> consumer<br />

information projects <strong>and</strong> for communicating with<br />

pork producers <strong>and</strong> the public. Through a legislative<br />

national <strong>Pork</strong> Check<strong>of</strong>f, pork producers invest $0.40<br />

for each $100 value <strong>of</strong> hogs sold. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Pork</strong> Check<strong>of</strong>f<br />

funds national <strong>and</strong> state programs in advertising,<br />

consumer information, retail <strong>and</strong> foodservice<br />

marketing, export market promotion, production<br />

improvement, technology, swine health, pork safety<br />

<strong>and</strong> environmental management. For information on<br />
