LeCroy Introduces Powerful and Intuitive I2C and SPI Serial Data Trigger &
Decode Options for WaveRunner Xi and WaveSurfer Xs
Chestnut Ridge, NY, October 2 nd , 2006
LeCroy ® Corporation introduces two new serial trigger and decode options that significantly enhance the
power and capability of the WaveRunner Xi and WaveSurfer Xs oscilloscopes in the embedded test market.
The I2Cbus TD and SPIbus TD Trigger & Decode options provide:
• Flexible trigger capability on an Inter IC (I 2 C) or Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) message, including
powerful I 2 C conditional DATA triggering
• Fast and intuitive protocol decode information overlayed on the DATA waveform
• Search and zoom capability
• Tabular display of protocol data that can be easily customized and exported to Excel ®
Most Advanced and Powerful I 2 C and SPI Trigger Capability
Conditional I 2 C Data Triggering Significantly Enhances Basic Triggering Capability
Most I 2 C serial data triggers restrict the DATA condition to an “equal” condition only. In many common
situations, this is all that is needed. However, to completely isolate specific events for better understanding
and debug, a developer would like to trigger on DATA conditionally, using a condition other than “equal”.
LeCroy’s I2Cbus TD provides this capability. For instance:
• I 2 C often utilizes DATA bytes to specify memory locations in EEPROMs. I2Cbus TD’s conditional
DATA trigger allows a developer to trigger on a range of DATA bytes that correspond to writes to
specific memory blocks in the EEPROM.
• When I 2 C-based sensors, such as analog to digital converters, are used in a design, the
oscilloscope with I2Cbus TD can be used to monitor DATA outputs and trigger when DATA is

outside a safe operating range. This makes verification of proper operation a quick and simple
task.
Binary, Hex, or ASCII Trigger Setup – Trigger and Decode information can be viewed in the same format,
aiding understanding.
DATA positioning in a 2048 byte message – A developer could select the exact location of DATA to trigger
on in a very long message. This is especially helpful for triggering on EEPROM programming sequences.
Support for Simplified SPI – Simplified SPI does not use a Slave Select, and is supported in SPIbus TD.
External Input Usable for Clock Signals – A developer is usually only concerned with the DATA waveform.
By inputting the CLOCK waveform to the EXT input, an extra oscilloscope Channel is usable to view other,
more important signals.
Fast and Intuitive Protocol Decode Makes Understanding Quick and Easy
Using advanced software algorithms developed for LeCroy’s CANbus TD Trigger & Decode, LeCroy has
made it quick and easy for both the novice and expert to see and understand the protocol-decoded
information. Decoded information is color coded and overlayed on top of the DATA waveform, with detail
about the frame structure. Decode information intelligently condenses or expands as the timebase or zoom
ratio setting changes, so it is easy to view the protocol data in a short or a long acquisition of messages. The
decode operation is fast, even for long acquisitions, and the user can choose whether to display decoded
data in Binary, Hex, or ASCII formats.
Search/Zoom and Tabular Display Complete the Solution
In addition to the Trigger & Decode capability, LeCroy also incorporates a Search/Zoom feature that is
completely integrated with a user-definable Tabular display of protocol data. This is especially handy for
location of specific events in long data records, like the WaveRunner Xi’s 10 Mpts or the WaveSurfer Xs’s
2.5 Mpts. Simply enter the Search criteria, select NEXT, and a zoom trace is automatically created and
scaled to show the message of interest. Or, display the Table, scroll through the listing of events, and
“touch” a line in the Table to zoom automatically to that message.
The Table also allows user customization, and can be easily exported to an Excel-compatible file with one
button push.
