i drugi broj!?
Premda će do vremena kada magazin izađe
nekoliko stranica.
Welcome
Uživajte.
Who’d a thunk it? Aft er our fi rst editi on, the police, the grammati cal protectorate and my boss all allowed us to do a
second, so here you are. As promised, less overt promoti on of the hotel and more informati on and entertainment this
ti me, my piece about Christmas excluded, and, really, that’s meant to be a casual commentary rather than a hard sell
and, by the ti me we fi nally go to print, it’ll be too late anyway.
My fl ippancy about the police is not too far from the truth about trying to do business in this country and, in a fascinati
ng insight, US Ambassador Foley reveals that improving the business environment is the focus of his mandate in
Croati a. There’s also a bit of performing arts with a chat with one of the pioneers of classical crossover, Maksim Mrvica;
really very interesti ng. Imparti ality is demonstrated with the editor’s top 10 places to go in Zagreb. Further a-fi eld, the
account on Varaždin will hopefully broaden some horizons and Hangar 7 in Austria looks well worth the trip.
We celebrate a couple of hotel stars: you can’t do justi ce to Josip Friščić, our Events Manager, in a coupe of pages and
he’s worth looking out to listen to his stories, some of which are even true. This year saw the launch of our Executi ve
Chef, Jeff rey Vella’s new book (again, no sales pitch here: there’s no money for the hotel from the sales, nor for Jeff ; just
his publisher). Its sub-ti tle, serious Croati an cuisine with a pinch of salt sums up what we’re about in the hotel – we’re
serious about what we do, but never too serious about ourselves.
Enjoy.

I premda nas pogađa
recesija i muči stoti nu stvari, uvijek ćemo naći vremena za kavicu, za
knjigu, za prijatelja s kojim ćemo izmjenjivati vječne gradske priče jer,
vrijedi napomenuti , ovdje i dalje svatko zna sve o svakome! Jednako
MJESTA
Mostly traditi onal, old-fashioned, with a
touch of art deco; Zagreb has a unique
sense of comfort, parti cularly in the
early autumn giving you the feeling you
live in a big cake topped with cream!
And, although we have all been hit by
the recession and have to worry about
a million things, there’s always ti me for
a cup of coff ee, a book or a friend with
whom one can exchange the neverending
city stories - in this city everyone
knows everyone! There will always be
an hour or two for an exhibiti on, a stroll
around the city, a walk in solitude through
the quieter places and those unavoidable
sighs intended to express how everything
used to be bett er ‘’back then’’, even
though we know that’s not the case and
the lively development of this city just
goes to show the opposite. However…
KAFIĆI BULDOG I FLORES
najraznovrsnijih likova, pozornica raznih događaja, koncerata i promocija.
kakaima, čajevima s madlenicama u maniri Marcela Prousta, najboljim
KNJIŽARE ALGORITAM I PROFIL
MEGASTORE
U Algoritmu i Profi
CAFÉ BULLDOG AND CAFÉ FLORES
Zagreb has always been the capital of cafés; important events have
taken place in its coff ee houses, and sti ll do. There’s the legendary
Café Bar Zvečka which saw the birth of Zagreb’s rock-culture in the
80’s; it sti ll exists but no one goes there today, not even for senti mental
reasons. The whimsical citi zens of Zagreb change café bars as oft en
as they change socks, and if one season you are the owner of the
most popular place in the city, that does not necessarily mean that
you’ll be next season’s venue de rigueur. Bulldog, though, with its extensive
choice of beers, has for years been a favourite watering hole,
a stage for a multi tude of events, concerts and promoti ons. Last winter,
which was as cold as the ice age, guests were drinking gallons of
grog and punch while the temperatures outside were dropping bellow
-20°. Just around the corner there’s a completely diff erent propositi on
- café bar Flores, a well-established café bar off ering delicious coff ees,
latt es, cocoas and teas with Madeleine biscuits à la Marcel Proust and
simply the best sandwiches and cakes in town. While the rest of the
city was prett y much choking in smoke, the management of the café
bar Flores chose to ban smoking. Of course, there are plenty of other
café bars in the city centre where one can spend hours and hours just
chatti ng or reliving one of Zagreb’s best known rock ballads, Beauti ful
women are passing through the town - one of the best-known songs
in a city where the way you dress will always be important.
ALGORITAM AND PROFIL
MEGASTORE BOOK SHOPS
Just like Bulldog and Flores, Algoritam and Profi l Megastore Book
Shops are much-visited insti tuti ons, and since Charlie, another famous
café bar, is located just in front of the Algoritam Book Shop, it would be
easy to think that this mysterious pentagram is the place where almost
everyone ends up to while away their ti me. Algoritam and Profi l are
not the sort of places people purposefully go to buy a book and then

2
nekoliko informacija, odlaze u kafi ć preko puta.
nevelikim interesom.
moglo zatrebati uhvati li ga nesanica u hotelskoj sobi.
svojoj ljepoti i dizajnu, postao hodočašće mladih zagrebačkih
desetljeću niknuo niz novih, vrlo zanimljivih i omiljenih restorana, jedino
leave; they are places to browse at length, to chat to people about
new publicati ons, to smell the books in these veritable temples, to
seek advice from a knowledgeable staff , to wallow in the writt en word
and then, of course, to digest a purchase over a coff ee on the terraces
outside. Both Profi l and Algoritam can be proud of what they off er; this
is by no means mainstream. There’s an extensive selecti on in English
-travel guides, cookbooks, bestsellers, professional literature, science
handbooks, atlases… in short, everything a visitor might need away
from home and running short of reading material. Profi l has a beauti -
ful café bar inside, which functi ons as a stage for promoti ons and book
readings as well as a gathering place for the local intelligentsia. Despite
the dark prophecies and although print runs of books in Croati a are not
large, the appeti te for literature in print has not diminished at all which
has to be a good thing for these two great insti tuti ons.
JAPANESE RESTAURANT TAKENOKO
It may seem a litt le strange that we suggest a Japanese restaurant as
one of the most notable restaurants in the Croati an capital, but Takenoko
has won over the citi zens of Zagreb in such a short ti me that
there are only a few of those who have never been there to try sushi
or teriyaki. Ethnic cuisine is not abundant in Zagreb, although there are
several Chinese restaurants but this place has captured the zeitgeist
when it comes to the urban glitt erati and its sophisti cated interior has
clearly hit the mark for the city’s beauti ful set. In Takenoko the most
important thing is to see and to be seen, and it’s the perfect vantage
point to witness a microcosm of Zagreb’s social life. While there have
been some great new restaurants opening in the city of the last 10
years, this is the only restaurant where you sti ll have to struggle to get
a table and while there’s not a waiti ng list of El Bulli proporti ons, it’s
sti ll advisable to book ahead. So put on the gladrags and kick off your
evening with some wonderful oysters.
neke nove, zanimljive adrese.
glava i kliješta ovećih
škampi. U Korčuli bi gotovo
grijeh bio naručiti meso,
bez obzira što i njega ima
na meniju. I dok je prema
grčkom mitu baš do otoka
Korčule Saturn odbacio srp
kojim je odrezao ud svome
ocu Uranu (što mora da
je utjecalo na sastav tla i
kvalitetu ribe), u restoranu
Korčula jedino što je mitsko
jest – fantasti čna neprolaznost
vremena.
5
I premda mnoge gosti onice nalikuju jedna drugoj kao jaje jajetu, u pod-
GOSTIONICA OKRUGLJAK
grada Medvedgrada, do kojega Zagrepčani u boljoj kondiciji rado
zdraviju i manje obilatu prehranu, u Okrugljaku ćete sigurno posrnuti ,
KORČULA FISH RESTAURANT
Located in the very city centre, in Teslina Street, Korčula is one of those
restaurants that is never menti oned in the newspapers or talked about
too much because it’s the place which naturally att racts you to walk in
and without much thinking enjoy a traditi onal cod dish on Fridays or
risott o and octopus during the week. You’ll always be served by the
same waiters with the same tape (remember them?) coming from
the speakers; no problem to the fi rst-ti me visitor but an insti tuti on for
regular diners. The fact that Korčula never changes its menu or music
but is always busy is the best proof of its reputati on in the city which
is constantly changing, developing before our eyes and moving from
one address to a new more interesti ng one. While some other recently
opened restaurants have to fi ght for every guest they can get, in the
case of Korčula, it’s simply enough to be … well, Korčula. Inside this
legendary place you can see the owners
of café bars congregate here, businessmen,
older gentlemen who have not lost
their southern accent aft er 40 years of
living in Zagreb, and everyone is more
than content as they suck fi sh heads or
scampi pincers, their faces dripping with
olive oil; although you will fi nd it on the
menu, it is almost a sin to order meat in
Korčula. Even though in Greek mythology,
Saturn threw away a scythe on the Island
of Korčula aft er he had used it to castrate
his father Uranus (you see, that’s why you
steer clear of the meat), the only mythical
thing in Korčula restaurant is this fantasti c
sti llness of ti me.
OKRUGLJAK TAVERN
Although many taverns look much of a muchness, in the shadow of
Sljeme mountain, there’s a place which off ers fresh cott age cheese
and boiled ham for an amuse bouche and lamb, suckling pig, duck or
veal for the main course followed by a rich slab of cake for a dessert.
Okrugljak is yet another place you have to visit while in Zagreb or your
trip might seem meaningless. Your only excuse might be a strict healthy
diet as you become terrifi ed when confronted with oversized meals.
With its long history, Okrugljak seems as old as the ancient town of
Medvedgrad towering above it and it’s not a bad idea to hike up to it
aft er a meal here. For those without such healthy qualms, simply leaning
back in your chair in the courtyard to look up the hill is just as sat-

a za okolnim stolovima nekom
sličnom užitku prepuštat će
se i brojni biznismeni, kao i
obitelji s djecom. Premda je
kao stvoren za ručak, Okrugljak
možete obići i navečer,
kad će u njemu biti nešto više
parova.
isfying. Even if you are health conscious,
Okrugljak is undoubtedly a place to go
astray as you watch all the other diners
enjoying all the abundance of this sinful
food. Although Okrugljak is a great place
for having a family lunch, it also provides
the perfect setti ng for a romanti c dinner
with its discreet service.
SVETI MARKO, SVETA KATARINA 6ST I
MARK, ST CATHERINE AND
crkve svetog Marka, okamenjenog, presvetog srca metropole. Jedan
rado udaljili odavde, a palače i dvorce pretvorili u hotele i ljetovališta.
No, ti me bi ipak Markov trg izgubio svoju stoljećima akumuliranu moć,
svoje parade, vođe, službene auto
mobile, tamna odi jela i na rodne
nošnje. Nakon što prošećete
oko crkve svetog Mar ka, svakako
obiđite nedaleku b a rok nu palaču
Oršić-Rauch, u kojoj je danas
smješten Hrvatski povijesni muzej.
U noći, ona će vam se učiniti
poput goleme školjke sa skrivenim
životom iznutra. Kao da se i
You might only be spending one night in Zagreb but you should defi -
nitely take the opportunity to walk up to the Church of St Mark, the
stone-covered holy heart of the capital. One of the best Croati an novels,
Giga Barićeva by Milan Begović, begins with a descripti on of the
cold and dark interior of this church where the main character, Penelope,
comes to pray and is soon surrounded by many fi ancées being
forced to make a diffi cult decision, just like her.
Some citi zens of Zagreb are not exactly thrilled by the fact that this
square is the very centre of the politi cal power as it houses the Croati
an Government, Parliament and the Consti tuti onal Court. They
would like to dislocate the power from this beauti ful place and turn
all the palaces and castles into hotels and summer resorts. However,
that would mean the loss of power of the St Mark’s Square
that has been accumulati ng for centuries. All the pomp of parades,
leaders and limousines, dark suits and traditi onal dresses would be
lost from this area. Aft er a nice stroll around St. Mark’s, you should
defi nitely visit the baroque palace Oršić-Rauch, which is home to the
Croati an Historical Museum. At night-ti me it appears before your
eyes as an enormous monolith, sheltering life within itself. It’s easy
to imagine the grand, aristocrati c balls sti ll being held inside just as
Zrinjevac is a love of all citi zens of Zagreb celebrated in some of the
most beauti ful verses such as “I walk around Zrinjevac, and hear the
sound of the sea in my ears” by a famous Croati an poet, Slavko Mihalić.
That sound of the sea is a frequent phenomenon for people living in

more” poznatoga hrvatskog pjesnika Slavka Mihalića.
došli u Zagreb studirati i potom nastavili ovdje živjeti . I koliko
DOLAC I RAZGOVOR S “KUMICAMA”
u grad prodavati domaće namirnice, sir i vrhnje, cvijeće).
osmjehne lice neke dobrohotne bakice. Ali, to ne znači da je gradska
tržnica “službeno” mjesto za obilaske. Ona je inti mna točka svih koji
vole tu neodoljivu kombinaciju zvonika katedrale, malih pečenjara u
sjeni svake kuće, brdašaca voća i povrća, a uz to i narančasto-ružičaste
drži do sebe, a poriluk, blitva i ti kvice tek su pozadina malih gradskih
razgovora.
A journey beyond chocolate...
Zagreb since many of them have come from the South, Dalmati a, to
study in Zagreb where they conti nued to live. And although the main
city square with a centrally located statue of Ban Josip Jelačić on a
horse is considered the ‘’centre’’, this park is the “centre of mandala”
in the fantasy world of all people living in Zagreb, especially those lucky
ones who have a fl at at Zrinjevac. The adventure would be incomplete
if one is to walk around the park without deciding to visit the Archaeological
Museum with interesti ng exhibits from Neolithic graves around
the city, mummifi ed corpses and other fascinati ng archaeological
fi nds. The same goes for the famous painti ngs exhibited at the Strossmayer’s
Gallery and the Modern Gallery.
DOLAC OUTDOOR MARKET PLACE
Almost everyone who visits Zagreb stops at Dolac and under the colourful
Dolac sun-umbrellas has a chat with the kumice - women from
the surrounding villages who have been coming into the city for centuries
to sell home-grown fruit and vegetables, home-made fresh cheese
and sour cream and fl owers. It’s become so normal to see scenes from
Dolac on TV that we fi nd it almost strange when we do not see the
good-natured kumice smiling to us from the TV screens day aft er day.
This doesn’t mean that the city market is an “offi cial” sight-seeing
locati on; It is an inti mate spot for all those who love the irresisti ble
combinati on of the Cathedral’s bell tower, small barbecue bars in the
shadow of every house, small piles of fruit and vegetables, along with
the orange-pink cacophony of fl owers. On Saturday every self-respecting
poseur appears at Dolac to see and be seen at the informal social
event that is Špica, getti ng involved city gossip and, of course, coff ee
against the background of leek, chard and aubergines.
MIROGOJ
krizantema. Ali, u svako doba godine
Mirogoj prakti cira svoj mir, u skladu
s imenom. Ima grobova od čije ljepote
zastaje dah, poput omanjeg, secesij skog
ljepotana književnika i kriti čara Vladimira
Lunačeka, koji ćete pronaći tako da
od groba drugoga književnog velikana,
Miroslava Krleže, skrenete lijevo, ili,
pak, zamolite ljubaznoga grobara da
vam pomogne u potrazi. Vrijedi napomenuti
MIROGOJ CEMETERY
One is less afraid of death when aware of the possibility of being buried
at Mirogoj. The main city cemetery is the place where so many important
and noteworthy Croati ans are buried that someone just passing
by might think it would be useful to have Vergil by his or her side
in order to show him or her around just like in Dante’s Hell. The ti me
to visit is around All Saints Day, November 1st,
when it seems to come alive with so many sparkling
chrysanthemums. But at any ti me of the year
Mirogoj is peace in harmony with its name (‘’mir’’
means ‘’peace’’ in Croati an). There are beauti fully
breathtaking graves – if you’ll pardon the pun –
like a small art deco beauty, the grave of the writer
and literally criti c, Vladimir Lunaček, which you’ll
fi nd if you turn left from the grave of another great
writer, Miroslav Krleža, or if you ask a kindly gravedigger.
Across the road from the Mirogoj entrance,
there’’s a café bar called by some “Kod mrtvaca”
(“The Deadman’s Place”) where grave-diggers
are regular customers exchanging their macabre
stories which will make your hair stand on end.
Creepy.

AKSIM MRVICA

KRALJ CROSSOVERA
Maksim Mrvica u hrvatskim je okvirima cijenjeni
pijanist iz Šibenika. U svjetskim okvirima, on je
međunarodna zvijezda, čiji je broj prodanih nosača
zvuka prešao već vrtoglavu brojku milijun i s kojim
pozornicu dijele neki od najcjenjenijih orkestara.
Višemjesečne turneje na kojima rade profesionalci
uključeni u karijere planetarnih
zvijezda, poput Robbieja Williamsa i Kylie
Minogue, kao i najznačajniji klasični umjetnici
na svijetu, kruna su karijere ovoga mladog
umjetnika, koji se posljednjim albumom,
Pure, vrati o pročišćenom zvuku klavira. U
Esplanadi, Mak simovu zagrebačkom omiljenome
mjestu za čašicu razgovora, otkrio nam
je svoju vezu s ovom hotelskom ljepoti com.
Dok sam živio u inozemstvu, za vrijeme boravka
u Zagrebu uvijek sam odsjedao u Esplanadi,
jer je to moj najdraži zagrebački hotel,
a i najbolji hotel u Hrvatskoj. Otkad živim u
nje govoj blizini, postao mi je idealno mjesto
za obavljanje različiti h poslovnih dogovora i
in tervjua u opuštenoj atmosferi.
Prvi ste koncert imali s dvanaest godina,
kada ste izvodili Haydna. Koji ste savjet tada
dobili od svoje profesorice prije nastupa?
S dvanaest godina prvi sam put nastupao
s orkestrom, a kao devetogodišnjak sam
imao prvi solo nastup. Nisam imao nekih
problema s tremom čak ni u najranijoj dobi,
dapače, profesorica me je ucjenjivala da
neću smjeti održati koncert ako ne budem
vježbao. Budući da sam bio ljenčina, nisam
volio vježbati , ali sam koncerte i kontakt s
publikom obožavao od malih nogu. A Haydn
je, ustvari, vrlo jednostavan koncert, jer je
dosta prilagođen djeci.
A koji ste savjet dobili prije stadionskog
koncerta, ispred 32 ti suće ljudi, u Tajvanu?
Tijekom godina stekao sam dosta iskustva i
savjeta prije samog nastupa. Mislio sam
publike i sjajnu atmosferu, osjećao odlično.
Kako je došlo do suradnje s Moskovskom fi lharmonijom,
jednim od najvećih orkestara
na svijetu?
His recent tour tour, featuring professionals
that work for the globally popular celebriti
es like Robbie Williams and Kylie Minogue
as well as the most important internati onal
classical arti sts, is undoubtedly the apex of
the young arti st’s career. With his latest album,
Pure, he has returned to a purifi ed
piano sound. In Maksim’s favourite place for
a friendly chat - The Regent Esplanade - he
revealed how he is connected to the hotel.
During my life abroad I always choose my
favourite hotel, The Regent Esplanade, for
my brief stays in Zagreb because it is the best
hotel in Croati a. For that reason I was a frequent
customer here. And since I live close
by, it is an ideal place for having business
meeti ngs and interviews in a relaxed atmosphere.
You performed in your fi rst concert playing
Haydn when you were only 12 years old.
What advice did your teacher give you before
the performance?
When I was 12 years old I performed with an
orchestra for the fi rst ti me and when I was 9
years old I had my fi rst solo concert. Even at
such a young age I didn’t have any problems
with the stage fright. My teacher even to
blackmail me saying that if I would not practi
ce, she would not allow me to hold a concert.
Since I was very lazy I hated practi sing,
but I have adored concerts and close contact
with the audience from an early age. Haydn
was actually a very simple concert because it
is orchestrated for children.
What advice did you get before the stadium
concert played for 32 thousand people in
Taiwan?
In ti me I have become experienced and I
have had a lot of support from my manager
who has worked in the profession his enti re
life so it was an accumulati on of advice and
experience before the performance itself. I
thought that I would suff er from stage fright
but as soon as I stepped on to the stage at
Najdraži kompliment
je onaj koji sam na
poetku karijere
dobio od direktora
diskografske kue
Sony Classics. Rekao
mi je da ve dugo
nije uo tako dobru
interpretaciju poput
moje.
The biggest
compliment I received
is the one from the
director of Sony
Classics. He told
me that he had not
heard such a great
interpretation for a
long time.

i dramati čna izvedba skladbe Bumbarov let.
u Londonu.
the stadium, where I played together with a band, I sensed an extraordinary
reacti on from the audience, I felt great!
How did you come to work with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra,
one of the biggest orchestras in the world?
In Japan they are represented by a promoter who was also representing
me and the biggest internati onal classical music celebriti es. I had
the opportunity to tour with those top musicians twice and it was a
parti cular honour to work with the conductor Jurij Simonov.
For many people the fi rst encounter with Maksim Mrvica was the
energeti c, modern and dynamic interpretati on of The Flight of the
Bumble Bee. Why did you decide to play that compositi on for ‘Piano
Player’, the fi rst album you recorded for EMI records?
The Flight of the Bumble Bee was already on my repertoire and I was
performing it frequently although it is a short compositi on. But as it is
very fast, it is one of the most diffi cult compositi ons ever writt en for
the piano.
Is it true that you have worked on it for a year and a half?
That is true. It is one of those compositi ons that you have to hold in
your hands, as we pianists like to say. It is very dear to my heart, and
since I love challenges and like to work on everything that is complicated,
I decided to work on The Flight of the Bumble Bee at the ti me
when I was presenti ng to diff erent labels and management in London.
What would you like to single out as your bravest step in your musical
career?
On my album ‘Electric’, Bach’s Prelude was arranged so that the extremely
rapid rhythm with a modern producti on altered the piano
20 INTERVJU | INTERVIEW
brz ri tam s toliko modernom produkcijom,
zvuk kla vi ra pro mijenjen gotovo do neprepoz
nat lji vosti . Stvorili smo elektronski zvuk
man.
sam nešto tako dras ti č no napravio. To je jednostavno
stvar ukusa.
Kako objašnjavate vašu zvjezdanu popularnost
u Aziji?
no ni to nije pravilo, jer su moje kolegice
Vanessa Mae te kvartet Bond veću popularnost
posti gle u Europi.
svijetu
I think my favourite city is
Paris which is not only a
Mecca for hedonists like
me but looks like it was
built with the intention of
being the most beautiful
city in the world
sound in a way it became almost unrecognizable.
We created this electric sound and that
was defi nitely my most courageous arrangement.
I think that the result is phenomenal but
I have also read on the Internet that some fans
had a hard ti me believing that I did such a radical
thing. It’s simply a matt er of taste.
How do you explain your popularity in Asia?
Is it related to a love of classical crossover or
the fact that they have found qualiti es of a
charismati c arti st in you?
People in Asia are more open to crossover but
that is not a rule because my colleagues Vanessa
Mae and the girls from the Bond All String
Quartet are much more popular in Europe. I
have worked on promoti on in Asia a lot and
played hundreds of ti mes on TV shows. My
success in Europe is more related to the classical
part of my repertoire.
What is the biggest stereotype about clasical
music you’ve come across during your career?
Classical music was always perceived as
‘heavy’ but I am glad that I have the opportunity
to convince primarily young people that
quite the opposite is the case, proving that
it is not boring but very, very interesti ng and
far more relaxed, even though people tend to
experience it only through a black and white
prism.

i Šoštakoviča.
Sve ovisi kako tko barata svojom
tehnikom i u kojem se razdoblju najbolje snalazi. Nekome je užasno
težak Mozart baš zbog te njegove čistoće i izazovne interpretacije. Meni
albume.
jednoga dana uspjeti “ugurati ” u svoj zgusnuti raspored.
Svijet klasičnih umjetnika smatra se introvertnim i komornim, a sami
umjetnici hipersenzibilni. Kako ga vi pomirujete s medijski i vizualno
No, ovo mi sadašnje,
otvorenije stajalište prema klasici mnogo više odgovara jer nema tog
nekoga grča prisutnog u hermeti čnom klasičnom svijetu. Meni je lijepo
voditi “normalan” život s povlasti com uživanja u toj prekrasnoj glazbi.
Strašno sam ekstrovertan, volim izlaziti , imam veliko društvo, putujem,
i to mi odgovara, više živim kao nekakav rock-glazbenik.
Hoćete li ovakav vizualni imidž rock-zvijezde zadržati i u budućnosti ili
ćete možda i klasičnu odjeću modnim crossoverom prilagoditi sebi?
dosadilo i zato sam počeo birati sakoe i kravate. Ali i oni uvijek moraju
biti nešto drugačiji, uskog kroja, poput onih Diorovih. Volim koketi rati i
Who is your favourite composer?
My favourite composers are modern composers like Rachmaninoff ,
Prokofi ev and Shostakovich. Their compositi ons are more complicated
and do not have the same logic as Mozart and Chopin but unfortunately
these contemporary arti sts are sti ll covered by copyright. Eighty years
have to pass aft er their death and only aft er that is it possible to work
on their compositi ons.
Which composer is the biggest challenge for a piano player?
That is a very individual experience. It all depends on personal techniques
and diff erent periods in the history of music. Some pianists fi nd
Mozart very hard because of that purity and challenging interpretati on.
I think Prokofi ev’s piano concertos are the hardest. His compositi ons
are some of the most diffi cult ever writt en and they someti mes last 45
minutes.
How much ti me do you need to master such a demanding compositi on?
Unfortunately I don’t have the luxury to practi ce a lot because I am always
on the road and I have to change my repertoire regularly and record
new albums. My biggest love is Prokofi ev’s Piano Concertos No. 2
and 3 but for one of them I would need to practi ce for 6 months. I hope
I will fi nd ti me to squeeze them in my schedule one day.
The world of classical arti sts is considered introvert and private and
with hyper-sensiti ve arti sti c types. How do you compare that with the
demanding world of dynamic contemporary producti on?
Years ago I was like that - an introverted classicist surrounded only by
people who are involved with classical music. I like to think that my atti
tude today is more open and actually bett er suited to me because I am
not enclosed and stressed in a hermeti c world. I like to have a ‘normal’
life with the privilege of enjoying beauti ful music. I am an extrovert, I
like to go out, I have many friends, I travel and I like it like that much
more. My life is more similar to the life of a rock musician.
Will you keep the visual image of a rock star in future or maybe adopt
classical clothing to make a fashion ‘crossover’?
For a long ti me I was wearing black and a lot of jewellery but I grew ti red
of it and that’s the reason I have started choosing jackets and ti es. But
they always have to be diff erent, like the skinny ti es signed by Dior. I also
like to fl irt with jeans but in my way and not like a rock musician.
Is the young amateur pianist competi ti on in Japan named aft er you
the biggest compliment of your career?
I att ended the fi rst competi ti on and I was surprised to hear those children
– without any formal musical educati on – play The Flight of the
Bumble Bee so well. Although it’s one of the most fl att ering compliments
I’ve got, it is not my favourite one. The biggest compliment I received is
the one from the director of Sony Classics, Vladimir Horowitz, one of the
karijere dobio od direktora diskografske kuće
Sony Classics i desetogodišnjeg menadžera
Vladimira Horowitza, jednog od najvećih pijanista
20. stoljeća. On mi je rekao da već
dugo nije čuo tako dobru interpretaciju poput
moje. Od nekoga tko ima golemo iskustvo
i s glazbom i s pijanisti ma, dobiti takvu pohvalu
i do glazbene škole koju sam pohađao. Oni
jeziku. Posjećuju i hrvatski restoran
‘Dobro’ u Tokiju, gdje žele isprobati sve naše
specijalitete.
I to u vrijeme
o.
Školovali ste se u Budimpešti i Parizu, a baza
vaše međunarodne karijere dugo je vremena
bio London. Jeste li upravo u tom modernom
sjecištu kultura, sti lova i umjetnosti
gdje sam osam godina imao svoju “bazu”.
Upuštanje u crossover vode
je najznaajnija odluka u
mojoj karijeri
greatest piano players of the 20th century. He
told me that he had not heard such a great
interpretati on for a long ti me. Coming from
someone with such huge experience in music
and with pianists, the compliment was a
great honour.
Is it true that your fans try to fi nd the house
in which you were born in Šibenik?
It’s true, the Japanese are doing that. And
not only that, as well as looking for the house
and taking pictures of it, they are also visiti ng
my music school. They are very dedicated
and loyal fans; they learn about Croati an history
and 90% of them who come near me
know a couple of phrases in Croati an. They
also like to go to the Croati an restaurant ‘Dobro’
in Tokyo where they want to try all our
specialti es. It is interesti ng to note that they
are more my classical than my crossover audience.
What was the defi ning decision of your career?
Deciding to perform classical crossover music
was the most important decision of my career.
It was made at a right ti me, when I was
ready for it. If I had that chance only a year
before that, I wouldn’t have accepted it.
You were educated in Budapest and Paris
and your internati onal career was based in
London for a long period. Were you able to
fi nd the city that suits you best in that modern
cultural crossroad?
That was manager’s decision. I think my favourite
city is Paris which is not only a Mecca
for hedonists like me but looks like it was
built with the intenti on of being the most
beauti ful city in the world. I spent two years
there with my wife and aft er that we moved
to London where I was based for 8 years. I
also like Zagreb but I am not a person who
can stay in one place for a long ti me. Luckily,
I have to travel a lot because I think I would
lose my mind if I had to stay one month in a
single place (laughing).

poludio bih.
Za Olimpijske igre u Ateni 2004. godine Velika
Britanija je izabrala vašu kompoziciju
Olympic Dream za službenu temu, a nekoliko
godina kasnije klizač Johnny Weir na
prvenstvu se natjecao uz vašu glazbu. Što
mislite, čime ste osvojili sportaše? Imaju li
i klasični umjetnici određene osobine sportaša?
Imaju mnogo sličnosti , prije svega samodisciplinu
i naglašenu radišnost.
I višestruka svjetska prvakinja Michelle
Kwan nastupala je uz moju interpretaciju
Franza Liszta, kao i Ruskinja Irina Slustkaya.
Trenutačno živite u Zagrebu, znači li to da
ćemo možda lakše doći do koncerta, primjerice
u Areni?
gdje sam počeo graditi svoju karijeru u
Hrvatskoj i uvijek mi predstavlja svojevrstan
strah i trepet. Vrata te garderobe uvijek mi
probude nostalgiju.
albuma. Danas iza sebe imate oko milijun
prodanih primjeraka nosača zvuka, status
međunarodne zvijezde te status jedno ga
od glavnih promotora klasične glazbe u
mladih. Koja vam je najveća profesionalna
že lja za sljedeće desetljeće vaše karijere?
Samo želim uživati u glazbi koju radim, i u
klasici i u crossoveru.
prvog koncerta s devet godina.
Deciding to perform
crossover was the most
important decision of my
career
At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens Great
Britain selected your compositi on ‘Olympic
Dream’ for their offi cial theme and a couple
of years later Johnny Weir, the ice-skater,
competed to your music. What do you think
made them choose you? Do classical arti sts
share certain qualiti es with athletes?
They share a lot of things and above all selfdiscipline
and willingness to work very hard.
Like athletes, classical arti sts cannot go a long
ti me without training since the motor control
of the hand movements has to be kept in
shape. And my music has a certain rhythm and
dramati c qualiti es which att ract ice-skaters.
Multi ple world champion Michelle Kwan has
also performed on my interpretati on of Franz
Liszt as well as Irina Slustkaya.
You currently live in Zagreb. Does that mean
that it will be easier to see you play, perhaps,
in the Arena?
The Arena could be a bit too big for me but
I oft en play at the Lisinski. Last year I held a
con cert there and the audience was fantasti c.
That concert hall is the place where I started
my career in Croati a and for me it is always a
pla ce that gives me the chills. The door to the
dres sing room sti ll evokes nostalgic memories.
Exactly ten years have passed since your fi rst
album. Today you have sold around a million
CDs and you have the status of a celebrity
and one of the leading promoters of classical
music among young people. What are professional
plans for the next ten years?
My only wish is to enjoy the music I work on,
both classical and crossover. I would like to
perform many concerts because I simply cannot
live without them, ever since the fi rst one,
when I was only 9 years old.
new editi on of The Regent Esplanade Magazine. The magazine’s editor-in-chief,
Ana Gruden, remarked: “I would like to thank the Regent
Esplanade and Mr. Mahoney for entrusti ng me and my team with the
opportunity to create a magazine which in represents and refl ects the
most beauti ful hotel in Zagreb. At the same ti me I would like to thank
all our adverti sing partners who have recognized the value of this project
and who have joined us in our fi rst issue. We will try to enhance our
work with every new issue and I am sure that we will succeed in that.”
For the guests the celebrati on was also an occasion to recall many
pleasurable and joyful moments spent at their favourite hotel. They
were talking about fi rst meeti ngs and romances, memorable weddings
and family gatherings. Executi ve chef, Jeff rey Vella, was responsible for
delighti ng palates, assisted by Croati a’s number one chef pati ssier, Mirjana
Kozlina who created all the desserts.
Actor Zlatko Ožbolt was moderator for the evening and the belle
the Spin dance company. A special gift for the hotel, however, and the
biggest surprise of the evening was the moment when legendary diva,
Tereza Kesovija, sang Happy birthday to an equally famous grande
i Veleposlanstvo Kanade u suradnji s Hrvatskom
ligom proti v raka, Zagrebačkim holdingom te hotelom Regent
Esplanade, a pod pokroviteljstvom predsjednika Republike Hrvatske, dr.
Ive Josipovića. Ususret 30. godišnjici trke Terry Fox u svijetu, 11. humanitarnu
akciju u Zagrebu posjeti la je sestra Terryja Foxa i međunarodna
direktorica Zaklade Terry Fox, Judith Fox Alder.
Trčao je 143 dana 42 km dnevno, no trku, nažalost, nije uspio
završiti . Bolest mu je oduzela život u 22. godini. U deset godina humanitarne
akcije u Hrvatskoj prikupljeno je gotovo četi ri milijuna kuna. Dio
ovogodišnjeg prikupljenog novca namijenjen je Insti tutu Ruđer Bošković
at Jarun in Zagreb organized by MPG Agency and the Canadian Embassy
in cooperati on with the Croati an League against Cancer, Zagreb Holding
and The Regent Esplanade Hotel with the patronage of the President
celebrati on of the 30th anniversary of the Terry Fox Run, the 11th humanitarian
acti on in Zagreb was visited by Terry Fox’s sister, the internati onal
director of the Terry Fox Foundati on, Judith Fox Alder. As Judith very
rarely travels to runs organized outside of Canada, her visit represented
a considerable acknowledgement of the great contributi on by local organizers
in the struggle against this vicious disease. The Terry Fox Run
is a marathon organized in honor of a young man who started running
the Marathon of Hope in 1980 in Canada in order to collect the money
needed for his medical treatment. He ran 42 kilometers every day, 143
days in succession but unfortunately was unable to fi nish it. The disease
took his life when he was just 22 years old. Over the past 10 years, the
charity has raised some 4 million kunas. One part of this years funds
will go to the Ruđer Bošković Insti tute for research projects and to the
The hotel has recognized the value of this type project
and general manager Philip Mahoney expanded: “Our
CULINARY CODE OF HONOUR
Jeff rey Vella has been recently admitt ed to with the Euro-
Toques Internati onal Food Order by the internati onal culinary
associati on in Paris. The European Associati on of Executi
in 1986 by visionaries Pierre Romeyer and Paul Bocuse
who saw the need to create a code to protect against the
dangers of food abuse. The Associati on believes that chefs play a very
important role in educati ng and informing the public and in promoti ng
safe and high quality food at every opportunity. All members of the
Euro-Toques Internati onal have to sign the code of honour under which
they guarantee that the food they prepare for their clients has a certi
fi ed origin, that they will protect and promote the culinary arts and
that they will serve to educate the public through proper labeling and
respect for traditi onal culinary methodology.
Jeff rey James Vella and Zinfandel’s Restaurant have been also listed in
the Gallo Guide of the 101 best restaurants in the world.
KOSHER BREAKFAST IN
The religious head of the Jewish community in Croati a, Chief Rabbi
Dadon, recently awarded the Regent Esplanade with offi cial certi -
the Jewish community has also resulted in a partnership with the
Croati an-Israeli Business Club.
THE ENERGY OF THE FAR EAST
Prior to their main performance in Zagreb at Dom Sportova, 10 members
of the internati onally-acclaimed Japanese drum group, Yamato,
treated guests of the Esplanade to a sneak preview. The troop gave a
quite extraordinary performance on the Oleander Terrace; it had all the
energy and passion of the main show and completely blew the socks off
those who witnessed it. Among the audience
of a hundred-or-so hotel guests and passersby
was Japanese Ambassador to Croati a, HE
Yoshio Tamura who watched Yamato’s performance
with pride and his ever-present smile.

HOHO,
Za narod koji se posebno ponosi sposobnošću
organiziranja dobre zabave, u zemlji u kojoj
praz nika. Zbog toga vam mogu pokušati dočarati
svoju zemlju, Ujedinjeno Kraljevstvo,
Crnim petkom.
For a nati on that prides itself on its ability to
have a good party, where a wedding’s not a
wedding unless it’s sti ll going strong when
the sun rises, Croati a is remarkably subdued
around Christmas ti me.
Perhaps it’s a refl ecti on of religious heritage
here: where many other European countries
have, rightly or wrongly, stepped fi rmly into
the camp of debauched secularism – as the
Pope would have us believe – Roman Catholic
Ove godine (prošle, ako čitate u siječnju)
želimo sve to promijeniti . Ne zbog mojega
anti religijskog stajališta (iako mi to stajalište
ne biste smjeli zamjeriti zbog deset godina
provedenih u katoličkom internatu), već zato
što je Božić.
I sada počinje besramno reklamiranje.
postoje. Naše tematske večeri omogućavaju
malim privatnim ili korporacijskom grupama
da budu dio velike zabave – drugim riječima,
ne morate imati neograničen budžet da biste
makes Croati ans hold back from the good
ti mes. Maybe it’s just that life’s just one long
party and there’s no need to have the same
blow-out come the so-called festi ve season.
One could argue that my own country, Britain,
spends the year in repressed gloom unti
l the party permission is granted each year
on December 1st and then it just goes wild;
there’s a reason those of us in the catering
business call the last Friday before Christmas
“Black Friday”.
This year (last, if you’re reading this in January)
we want to change all that. Not because
of any irreligious senti ment (although, frankly,
ten years in an English Catholic boarding
school could excuse me for that) but because,
hey, it’s Christmas.
Here’s where the shameless adverti sing
starts. We’re trying out an old Christmas party
concept that, strangely, doesn’t seem to
exist in Croati a. Our themed party nights allow
small private or corporate groups to parti
cipate in one big party, meaning you don’t
have to be a corporate heavyweight to have a
imali blještav božićni domjenak. Osmislili smo dvije potpuno različite
vrste zabava – jednu sa sofi sti ciranim scenarijem tajanstvenih ubojstava,
koja je predviđena za 9. prosinca. Tu će biti i glumaca, što podrazumijeva
mnogo interakcije, a sve će se odlično uklopiti s obzirom
na povezanost hotela s Orient Expressom. Ova zabavna večer završit će
nastupom odličnoga glazbenog sastava. U petak, 17. prosinca, prepusti t
Iako sam
uvijek prilično skepti čan oko koncepta “večeri 70-ih”, imao sam prilike
taj bend slušati na jednom domjenku u siječnju kada sam uhvati o samoga
sebe kako očijukam s plesnim podijem. Dolazak Nove godine
Bit će to
ako ni zbog čega drugog, onda zbog mog visokog
tlaka, re zervirajte unaprijed.
Naravno, naši će restorani biti za duženi
za božićne delicije, pa tako 24. prosinca
pripremamo romanti čnu
rib lju ve čer (zvuči čudno, zar
ne?). To je, naravno, uvod
u obiteljska druženja
There are two
parties at different
ends of the
spectrum with a
rather sophisticated
murder-mystery
evening kicking
off the program
on Thursday 9 th
December. On
Friday 17 th , we’re
going camp with a
‘70s evening.
big glitzy Christmas event. There are two parti es at diff erent ends of the
spectrum with a rather sophisti cated murder-mystery evening kicking
off the program on Thursday 9th December. This comes complete with
actors and lots of interacti on and it’s all parti cularly apt because of the
hotel’s Orient Express connecti ons. The evening should be a lot of fun
and will be fi naléed by a great band. On Friday 17th , we’re going camp
with a ‘70s evening: there’ll be the chance to dress up (with a prize for
the best outf it), glam up and dance to Disco Inferno, one of the country’s
best show-bands. Now I’ve always been a bit skepti cal about ‘70s
nights but I saw this band at an event in January and even a nasty cynic
like me was seen fl irti ng with the edge of the dance fl oor.
We’ll also be celebrati ng in style on New Year’s Eve in the Emerald Ballroom
as has now become a traditi on. Again, this is a public event and a
great one for putti ng together a group of friends without going through
the trauma of whose place is the venue. This event scares the bejasus
out of me because everyone always leaves it to the last minute to book
– it’s like no-one wants to take the plunge and be seen by their mates
as an ‘organizer’ or ‘in charge’ (and thus open
to all sorts of ridicule) –
so, in the interests of my
blood pressure, if nothing
else, book early.
Of course, our restaurants will
be doing Christmassy stuff as
well with, among other things,
our romanti c Fish evening (sounds
weird, no?) on December 24th . This, of

Napokon
mi otkrije gdje bismo mogli mogli naći otvoren restoran. “Probajte u
Esplanadi”, rekao je. Hvala, kompa!
skrivača u ovome gradu (uključujući i dizala).
course, is the start of the family celebrati ons in Croati a with the Dolac
fi sh market wiped out of octopus and other fi sh (it’s worth a visit, just
to see the theatre). Restaurants in Zagreb are all closed by 6pm and
we’re bucking the trend and trying to start a great Briti sh or American
traditi on of spending as litt le ti me with your family as possible – Christmas
day lunch and that’s it! This came about from my experiences last
year as I trawled the city on the 24th in search of a restaurant to eat
at with my family. I fi nally came across one just closing its doors and
pleaded with the owner to tell me where I could fi nd an open restaurant:
“try the Esplanade”, he said. Thanks, buddy.
Christmas day, we’re doing our home delivery service again; we don’t
promise a whole lot of Christmas cheer but we’ll be at your door with
the turkey (surprisingly aff ordable, too) ready for you to take the plaudits
without the kitchen cursing. Reasonably enough, we’re restricti ng
delivery to the Zagreb area; we ain’t no Santa Claus. Happiness is to be
found in the hotel where it’ll be big, beauti ful buff et ti me and children
can run amok in what has to be one of the best hide-and-seek desti nati
ons in town (complete with elevators).
Whatever your plans this year, whatever your faith, have a great festi
ve season and, to quote the late, great Dave Allen, may your god go
with you.
s obitelji oduševljen gradom Zagrebom, osobito hotelom Regent
NATO saveza do naše pune potpore ulasku Hrvatske u Europsku Uniju
snažni smo partneri, privrženi demokraciji, slobodi i sigurnosti naših
dvaju naroda.
i investicije
Hrvatske i Sjedinjenih Američkih Država?
Potencijal
vidim u obnovljivim energijama, u modernizaciji i ekspanziji turisti čke
brojna birokracija, regulati ve i porezi, nedostatak pravne transparentnosti
i konkurentnost. Kao rezultat približavanja parlamentarnih izbora u
Hrvatskoj, iznešena su neka moguća rješenja, a mi zaista podržavamo
takvih odluka staviti će Hrvatsku i njezinu industriju u veoma lošu
poziciju i ograničiti joj mogućnost da bude u predosti ti jekom globalnog
oporavka.
says that he and his family are very happy in Zagreb. Given that his wife
Kate Suryan has Croati an origins, they visited Dalmati a and her relati ves
and have att ended many festi vals and cultural events in the country; even
though they just arrived, they are already ‘worried’ that their stay in Croati
a will be too short.
How would you evaluate relati ons between Croati a and the USA?
Relati ons between the United States and Croati a have never been bett er.
From our NATO alliance to our full support for Croati a’s accession to the
Now is the time to translate our excellent
relations into increased opportunities for
trade and investment
EU, we are strong partners with a shared commitment to democracy, freedom
and security for our two peoples. Now is the ti me to translate our
excellent relati ons into increased opportuniti es for trade and investment.
Where and how do you see possibiliti es for more enhanced economic
collaborati on between Croati a and USA? Do you think there are obstacles
in Croati a for improving this?
The United States would like to be a stronger trade partner with Croati
a, and I personally would like to see signifi cant new U.S. investments
in this country. I see potenti al in renewable energies, in modernizati on
and the expansion of tourism infrastructure, in informati on technology
and in consumer goods. These are all areas in which the United States
has strong experti se and which can provide economic growth, jobs and
individual opportunity in Croati a.
Unfortunately, in the current environment, it is diffi cult to “sell” Croati a
as an att racti ve investment desti nati on for U.S. businesses. I have said in
many forums since my arrival in Croati a that factors such as the multi ple
layers of bureaucracy, the regulatory and tax burden, the lack of judicial
transparency, the uneven playing fi eld for foreign investors and the infl exible
labor market create a business climate that discourages investment
and impedes economic growth. Croati a is facing tough challenges in reviving
its economy and in making structural reforms necessary to assure future
growth and competi ti veness. As Croati a moves into an electi on season
and various reforms are proposed, we urge dialog on these issues for
the sake of the nati onal interest. Delaying these decisions will put Croati a
and Croati an industry at a disadvantage and limit the ability to take advantage
of global recovery. Eff ecti ve reform is important not just for Croati a
but for making EU integrati on a success and opening the door for other
countries in the region to follow this path. To successfully transform the
economy, broad politi cal support will surely be necessary and I am encouraged
that President Josipović has expressed his support in principle..

s velikim gospodarskim izazovima u protekloj godini,
no istodobno je Hrvatska obdarena unikatnim
Mnoge kompanije,
i američke i hrvatske, iskreno progovaraju o preprekama
Članstvo u EU donijet će nove prednosti , no ako se
ulazak u Europsku Uniju. Vjerujemo da članstvo
What do you think Croati a needs to change to
enhance the climate for fo rei gn investment, specifi
cally, and the business environment generally?
Like many countries in the region, Croati a has
faced tremendous economic challenges over the
last year, but at the same ti me Croati a is endowed
with unique natural and human resources that
make it inherently interesti ng to foreign investors.
In other words, there is enormous potenti al
should the Government achieve its goal of creati
ng a more favorable business climate that encourages
new investment. Many companies, both
American and Croati an, tell us frankly about the
obstacles to invest in new business ventures, or to
expand existi ng ones. The fact is that in the global
economy Croati a must compete to att ract business
and investment. EU membership will bring
new advantages but if Croati a does not reform to
make itself more att racti ve and competi ti ve, then
that money, and the jobs and economic acti vity it
can create, will go elsewhere.
The US openly supports Croati a entering the EU.
Is there a possibility that the USA wil do away
with visas for Croati an citi zens aft er Croati a enters
the EU?
The US, although it is not a member of the EU, remains
one of the strongest supporters of Croati a’s
ambiti on to join the European Union. We believe
that joining NATO and the EU brings great benefi ts
in security and prosperity both to the joining state
lanstvo u EU donijet
e nove prednosti,
no ako se Hrvatska
ne poboljša u
smislu atraktivnosti i
kompetivnosti, novac,
poslovi te ekonomska
aktivnost koja se može
stvoriti otii e negdje
drugdje
EU membership
will bring new
advantages but if
Croatia does not
reform to make itself
more attractive and
competitive, then
that money, and the
jobs and economic
activity it can create,
will go elsewhere
POSLOVNI INTERVJU | BUSINESS INTERVIEW
u NATO-u i EU donosi velike koristi u pogledu
Hrvatski uspjeh
ostvaren član stvom u NATO-u, i uskoro u EU, ima
To
je svakako prednost za pristup programu odustajanja
od viza. No, ulazak bez vize ograničava putnika
na 90 dana poslovnog ili turisti čkog boravka
u Sjedinjenim Državama, dok je B1/2 viza manje
restrikti vna u smislu duljine ostanka i akti vnosti
do 2005.
prirodne katastrofe i značajan poli ti čki prevrat
ti jekom svoje povijesti .
vladinih i insti tucionalnih kapaciteta. Osim
toga, Haiti ju je potrebna pomoć međunarodne
zajednice da bi se njihova uništena ekonomija
and to Europe as a whole. Croati a’s success in joining
NATO, and soon the EU, has a broader signifi cance
for the other countries of South-East Europe, confi
rming that the door to membership truly remains
open and reform is rewarded.
It is uncertain when Croati a will qualify for membership
in the visa waiver program. While a great
deal of progress has been achieved, there are certain
minimum criteria that sti ll need to be met. These requirements
are not related to EU membership. We
are working closely with the Croati an Government
to meet the requirements for achieving this important
goal. It should be noted that in the interim the
maximum validity for Croati ans traveling on B1/2
visas has been extended from 5 to 10 years. This
provides some advantages over visa waiver eligibility.
The visa waiver restricts a traveler to 90 days in
the US traveling on business or leisure, while a B1/2
visa is less restricti ve both in terms of length of stay
and the acti viti es that can be undertaken. While this
doesn’t sati sfy Croati a’s aspirati ons to join the visa
waiver list, it is an att empt to expand opportuniti es
for Croati ans to visit the US.
You were US Ambassador to Haiti from 2003 to
2005. Given the politi cal and social upheaval there,
what do think needs to happen to achieve longterm
stability?
The earthquake in Haiti in 2009 was an immense
tragedy both in human terms and in the damage to
Haiti ’s economy. Tragically, Haiti has experienced
natural disasters and politi cal upheaval throughout
its history. It needs many things in order to enjoy
stability and a bett er future, but fi rst among these
is the development of its own governmental and
insti tuti onal capaciti es. Beyond that Haiti needs
sustained help from the internati onal community
in order to restore the shatt ered economy and give
individuals the skills they need. My government has
contributed enormously through direct assistance
Moja supruga ima dalmatinske korijene i bili smo veoma sretni
što smo imali prilike istražiti to naslijee i provesti vrijeme s
lanovima njezine obitelji tijekom našeg boravka u Hrvatskoj

My wife has family roots in Dalmatia and we have been very
fortunate to be able to explore that heritage and to spend time
with members of her family during our time in Croatia
će to činiti i u budućnosti .
Prati te li kulturni život Zagreba?
Oduševljeni sam posjeti telj zagrebačkih, ali i
općenito hrvatskih kulturnih događaja. Već sam
imao priliku posjeti ti neke od gradskih brojnih
izvrsnih muzeja, i uživao sam u glazbenim izvedbama
onoliko koliko mi raspored to dopušta. Impresioniran
sam i različitošću i brojem izvrsnih festi -
vala diljem Hrvatske.
pred nosti i nedostaci života ovdje?
i ugodan dom. Oduševljeni smo šarmom i elegan
cijom grada te širokim rasponom akti vnosti i
do ga đanja.
To vrije
to naslijeđe i provesti vrijeme s čla novima nje zine
obitelji ti jekom našeg boravka u Hrvatskoj.
Zašto volite dolaziti u Hotel Regent Esplanade
Zagreb? Što vam se ovdje najviše sviđa?
Volim povijest i uživam u osjećaju nekog „drugog
uživate u svom zadovoljstvu i uslugama nevjerojatno
modernog hotela.
and people-to-people aid and we will conti nue to
do so.
Do you follow cultural life of Zagreb?
I am an enthusiasti c follower of Zagreb’s and, for
that matt er, all of Croati a’s cultural programs. I
have already had the opportunity to visit some of
the city’s many excellent museums and have enjoyed
as many musical performances at the Lisinski
and other venues as my schedule permits. I am
also greatly impressed by the variety and number
of outstanding fairs and festi vals thro ughout Croati
a. I have made it a personal go al to visit as many
as I can in what, I can alrea dy tell, will be my far too
brief ti me in Croati a.
How do you like living in Zagreb? What are advantages
and disadvantages of living here?
My family and I are greatly appreciati ve of our oppor
tunity to live in Croati a and we are fi nding Zagreb
to be an exciti ng and comfortable home. We
are conti nually impressed by the charm and elegan
ce of the city and the wide range of acti viti es
and events to keep us busy. We are warmed by the
wel coming nature of the people we meet each day.
I think the only disadvantage to living here is knowing
that it will only be for a few short years. That
will not be enough ti me to experience all that Zagreb
and Croati a have to off er. My wife has family
roots in Dalmati a and we have been very fortunate
to be able to explore that heritage and to spend
ti me with members of her family during our ti me
in Croati a.
Why do you like coming to the Regent Esplanade
hotel? What do like here the most?
I love history and enjoy the sense of being in a different
ti me when I enter the Regent. The Regent
Esplanade’s rich legacy makes visiti ng an opportunity
to connect with Zagreb’s past while enjoying all
the comforts and services of an outstanding modern
hotel.
Slalomska utrka Svjetskoga skijaškog kupa, Snježna kraljica,
održava se na zagrebačkom Sljemenu od 2005.
NJEŽNA KRALJICA
The Snow Queen is a slalom race held on Sljeme in Zagreb
as a part of the Alpine skiing World Cup as of 2005
now Queen

poznati brat i sestra, Ivica i Janica Kostelić, naporno
trenirali za svoje medalje. Premda je izvorni
naziv utrke bio Zlatni medvjed, ime kupa
je promijenjeno u čast Janice Kostelić, najbolje
hrvatske i svjetske skijašice u to vrijeme. Bez
Janice i njezinih velikih sportskih uspjeha, Zagreb
ženskim utrkama Svjetskoga kupa, a iznosi 165 ti suća eura. Možda
je to razlog zašto je mnogim skijašicama upravo ta utrka Svjetskog
kupa najdraža, no atmosfera koju stvara dvadesetak ti suća gledatelja
i navijača također nije zanemariva.
simbolično, kraljica dobiva plašt i svoje prijestolje.
osvojiti drugo mjesto.
The highest peak of Medvednica Mountain – Sljeme
– is only half an hour away from the main city
square. It’s the place where the famous brother
and sister, Ivica and Janica Kostelić, trained hard
for their medals. Although the original ti tle of the
race was the Golden Bear, the name of the cup
was changed in honor of Janica Kostelić, the best
Croati an and internati onal skier at the ti me. Without
Janica and her sporti ng achievements, Zagreb would not
have got the opportunity to organize such an important race for
women; women who deserved to win the ti tle of a queen and not of
a bear. The Snow Queen takes place on the so-called Red Run, from
an alti tude of 985 meters, to 785 meters. Luckily for the internati onal
skiing elite that are happy to gather every year on Zagreb’s runs, the
Internati onal Skiing Federati on has recognized Zagreb as a top desti nati
on and included it in its race program for an extended period of ti me.
The prize-fund for this race is 165,000 EUR, the highest amount at any
World Cup women’s race. For that reason, this race one of the favourites
for the women skiers. The atmosphere created by some 20,000 spectators
and supporters, however, is also a big factor. The Snow Queen
trophy is a handmade crystal crown on which the name of the win ner
is engraved and the queen also gets a symbolic robe and her thro ne.
Janica Kostelić, who has always dreamt of winning in front of her passionate
supporters, has unfortunately never formally won the Snow
Queen ti tle. The fi rst year she was eliminated aft er the fi rst run and on
her 24th birthday in January 2006, she skied the race without a sti ck
and had only one glove and sti ll won the third place. The next year Ana
Jelušić came second and won the princess ti tle. Kings are not forgott en,
however: the Internati onal Skiing Federati on proposed the orga nizati on
of a men’s cup in 2008 and Ivica Kostelić also got the opport unity to
race on home ‘turf’ that year, winning second place at the race.
Hangar 7 at Salzburg airport is much more than an aircraft storage
glass and steel constructi on is an excepti onal juxtapositi on of art,
was made for very practi cal reasons, however: the Flying Bulls needed
Flying Bulls
zaljubljenik u povijesne avione.
Hangar 7. Značajno arhitektonsko obilježje grada Salzburga i jedan
od najneobičnijih domova najneobičnijih letjelica. Prvi susjed Hangara
7, Hangar 8, izgrađen je u isto vrijeme. On nije otvoren za javnost,
letjelice održavaju i popravljaju. Ondje dobivaju svoj eksluzivni izgled
i impresivne mogućnosti .
nije li primarna zadaća Flying Bullsa davati krila?
Titov Douglas DC-6B
and cigars. Sky bar is undoubtedly the key att racti on at the hangar. This
excepti onal bar off ers a full view of aircraft exhibits and Formula 1 cars
from every angle resulti ng in its sub-ti tle, the Three-sixty bar.
The Flying Bulls
The Flying Bulls of Salzburg are real arti sts for fi nding, restoring and
putti ng historical aircraft back in the air. The story of this incredible
collecti on starts in 1980, when Sigi Angerer, today the chief executi ve
of the Flying Bulls, started looking for aff ordable aviati on anti ques in
the US together with his friends. At the ti me he was working as a pilot
and was already a passionate lover of historic airplanes. His fi rst acquisiti
on was the American 1954T-28B which became the ‘seed’ of the
collecti on. As a small fl eet was put together, friends decided to give
it a name: The Flying Bulls. The collecti on began growing rapidly and
they were faced with the problem of housing their unique aircraft ; and
that’s how Hangar 7 was born. Today it is an architectural landmark
of the City of Salzburg and one of the most disti nguished homes for a
unique collecti on of aircraft . Its next door neighbor, Hangar 8, was built
at the same ti me. It’s not open to the public but it’s equally important
asthe place where the popular aircraft are restored and repaired. Hangar
8 is the sporning ground, where they regain their former glory and
become historical icons. All aircraft in this collecti on are much more
than pieces of art, however, no matt er how old, they can sti ll fl y and
that’s a prett y rare commodity with such an anti que collecti on. Maybe
it’s not so surprising: Red Bull gives you wings, aft er all.
Tito’s Douglas DC-6B
One of the most valuable gems of the collecti on is the Douglas DC-6B
which once belonged to Josip Broz Tito, Marshall of Yugoslavia. Latt erly,
luxury aircraft with the best in technical specifi cati on. Visitors can see
the legendary jump jet, along with the other exhibits, completely free
arti sts and innovati ve contemporary art, making arti sts more visible to
the wider audience. The HangART 7 program provides a platf orm for
new arti sts under the banner air and art. Entrance to Hangar 7 is free
but to get a table at Ikarus needs a bit of planning to accommodate
the months-long wait-list. Hangar 7 is certainly not a traditi onal place
for gathering and spending ti me but it is available for all diff erent types
of events: presti gious internati onal meeti ngs, brand and corporate
presentati ons, private birthday parti es and anniversaries, albeit with
something of an enhanced budget. Its nonpareil architecture and atmosphere
and extraordinary mechanical power will almost certainly
Presently some 50 000 people live in
Varaždin which makes it an important cultural,
transport and economic centre in Croati a.
Varaždin is unique and diff erent from other
citi es mostly because of its monuments and
art heritage; in many ways it’s a kind of city
museum. Its old centre is home to one of
the oldest European city halls, the Old Town
and numerous palaces. The Patačić palace
is located on the Franciscan Square and the
famous Palace of Drašković family on the
main city square. St Nicolas Church is one of
the most beauti ful churches with a luxurious

The City of Varaždin is the
besides the Baroque Evenings, there are other
festi vals such as Špancirfest and Trash Film
Festi val. One of cultural and historical att racti
city guards.
FESTIVAL OF POSITIVE EMOTIONS
The Špancirfest, a festi val for street walkers
and positi ve emoti ons, is expending every
year and att racti ng new visitors locally but
also those from further afi eld. During the
festi val the city streets are fi lled by diff erent
musicians, entertainers and performers. If
it’s all day and night-long fun, countless concerts,
workshops and plays for children and
adults you’re looking for, this make’s an excellent
choice to visit. Špancirfest is a manifestati
more to Varaždin than that: the Square of
Traditi onal Craft s is one of the most visited
sites and a meeti ng point for local citi zens.
In an inti mate atmosphere of the recentlyconstructed
city square there is lots to be
learnt about diff erent arti san skills: weavers,
hatt ers, pott ery makers are all there…
And when we speak about city symbols, we
should not forget famous klipići, a delicious
soft and crispy pastry very characteristi c of
this picturesque city. Varaždin is also the
city with the greatest number of bicycles
to look around at the beauti ful surroundings
both in nature and in architecture to
see why.
Prva revija u Esplanadi
Najprije je modi posvećen prostor u okviru izložbe proljetnog sajma
Zagrebačkog zbora 1933. No, prva modna revija zagrebačkih krojača,
kitničarki, klobučara, postolara, torbara, remenara i cvjećarki održana
je 17. listopada 1935. u hotelu Esplanade. Nakon toga je svako deset-
Today the Golden Needle not only represents a mixture of traditi onal
values and new trends, but forms a presti gious event for all those who
have the opportunity to parti cipate. The traditi on emerged 75 years
ago as a result of a desire of Zagreb’s fashion trade to initi ate something
similar to what they had seen in foreign countries. They wanted
to make Zagreb one of the fashion centres of Europe and reach out to
a broader audience and let them know about the quality of domesti c
fashion products.
prateće modne sekcije tada su trajale tjedan dana.
Šabi Fashion has participated at the fashion
show since 1958, the year the fashion house
was founded.
in terms of process and trend but during the 80’s the shows were really
excepti onal. The fashion shows and other related fashion selecti ons
were organized for an whole week.
Men’s fashion house, Šabić, is the parti cipant of the Golden Needle
with the longest traditi on. Current owner Mirza Šabić nostalgically evokes
those days: ‘’When I was a boy the show was called ‘Fashion Week’
and lasted a whole week. Each evening there were 4 reviews organized.
At the ti me, craft smen presented their collecti ons, with some 40 models,
for the whole year.” Šabić Fashion has parti cipated at the fashion

dakle od 1958. godine. Krajem 90-ih i početkom rata Tjedan mode se
počeo održavati tri večeri, a zati m dvije. Posljednjih petnaestak godina
Zlatna igla održava se samo jednu večer.
Konkurentni s Europom
Zlatna igla, predsjednica
jer imaju mnogo ponuda s vanjskih tržišta, jeft inih i nekvalitetnih.
zadržati vlasti tu prepoznatljivost i izričaj. Kolekcije moraju pričati
priču!” napominje gospođa Jengić. Nesumnjivo, Zlatna igla otvara vrata
Nova profesionalna dosti gnuća i
pomogne!
Kriteriji za sudjelovanje na najstarijoj obrtnikoj
reviji danas su mnogo stroži nego prijašnjih
godina
show from the day it was founded in 1958. In the 90’s, just before the
war, Fashion Week was gradually becoming shorter: at fi rst it was organized
for three nights and then for two. Over the past fi ft een years the
Golden Needle has been organized only as a one-night event.
European competi ti on
The development of craft s in Zagreb is closely connected to the development
of the city itself. At fi rst Zagreb’s craft smen were associated
in the Craft smen Associati on of the Free Royal City of Zagreb but in
1892 schools for tailors and diff erent courses slowly started to functi
on. Fashion in Zagreb was gradually awakening but the ideas and
know-how were sti ll coming from Vienna or Paris. The Golden Needle
fashion shows were organized one aft er another and fi nally more attenti
on was given to the quality of materials and manufacture. Even
though this is the 75th ti me this fashion show has been organized, the
president of the review board, Branka Jengić, admits that they feel as
if they have just started: “We have to prove our quality to potenti al
buyers because they are under pressure from foreign markets and
a cheap, non-quality off er. Our designers are equally good but they
have to work in much harder conditi ons.” It is important to understand
that the Golden Needle does not present unique collecti ons but factory
product. For Croati an designers this is a unique opportunity to
promote their work, prove that they are ready to keep up with the
European fashion competi ti on and internati onal creati vity. The president
of the review board also underlined that Croati a has neglected
texti le producti on and that importi ng without any quality criteria has
also aggravated their struggle for survival in general but especially in
this extremely hard recession year. “Croati an politi cs are not oriented
toward domesti c producers at all”, Jengić warns.
New ideas
The criteria for taking part in the oldest trade show are now much stricter
than they used to be, but the guiding principle during selecti on is
to rejuvenate the Golden Needle. The basic requirements are innovati
on, creati vity and imaginati on but also quality. “Collecti ons need to
show a purifi ed style but it is also important to see that a designer is
able to preserve his or her disti ncti veness and expression. Collecti ons
ne ed to reveal a story behind them” Jengić emphasizes. Undoubtedly,
the Golden Needle opens doors for many young creati ve designers intending
to show what they know and present their work to the broa der
public. This year 17 designers presented their latest professional achievements.
Although most of them are craft smen, today they predominantly
have university degrees and are grandsons or granddaughters or
inheritors of family businesses trying to fi nd their place in the limelight.
And the very goal of the Golden Needle is to help them get there!
kroz najnapredniju tehnološki opremljenu ustanovu. Osim toga, tvrtka Ortoimplant
uvela je posljednji novitet – tvrdi KEYlaser3+, proizveden u njemačkoj tvornici
KaVo, koja prednjači u proizvodnji tehnički sofisticirane opreme. Surađujući s
njima, ujedno pratimo i svjetske trendove.
Introducti on of dental spa philosophy in Croati a
In 2006, Ortoimplant started a Croatian first in dental technology being the first
to introduce the new trend of creating a highly profiled designer smile for its
clients – or so the marketing blurb goes. Doctor of dental surgery, Mr. Zdenko
Trampuš leads a highly reputable team of dental specialists performing more
than 500 implantologycal operations each year. They dazzle their patients, if
you’ll pardon the pun, with an invisible teeth bracelet using ultra-modern 3D
programming. Among the spectrum of services they offer is orthodontics, implantology,
prosthetics, endodontics, and aesthetic stomatology. This year the
quality of their work has been accredited with ISO 9001 certification.
Ortoimplant’s clients are the first in the country to experience new dental spa
approach and Dr. Trampuš, as a member of foreign and domestic implantology
associations, explained why dental spa is such a revolutionary concept and
revealed the reason why his patients don’t run away from the doctor’s surgery:
Dental spa is circular approach, created to assist the patient and their problems
from diagnosis to remedy all in one place – the most advanced technologicallyequipped
institution such as ours. The company has introduced the latest thing on
the market – hard KEY laser 3+ produced by KaVo, the renowned German manufacturer
of precision dental equipment. Working with them, we are also a part of
the trend.
Contact KEY laser 3+ is not the only hard laser on the market but it’s the first one
with “feedback effect”. In short, it means that it can distinguish between healthy
and pathologic structure such as in case of caries and limescale. Furthermore, it is
the fastest one on the market and has the ability to signal the device when to stop,
in order to prevent damaging the dental nerve. All in all, it’s a magic stick.
With this technology, we get precision surrounded by pleasant music background.
Patients used to run away from the dental surgery fearful of the drill-machinesound,
but not here as the laser eliminates the sound. Having the sound suppressed,
the impact of pain is significantly reduced and smaller surgical procedures are
conducted without the anaesthetic, which is a huge advantage.
Ortoimplant is the first, and for now the only one, to work with this type of laser
in Croatia.

JOSIP RIŠI
Jedan od zašti tnih
znakova hotela,
voditelj banketnog
odjela Josip Friščić,
svojim šarmom već
gotovo 30 godina
oduševljava klijente
i goste. Pokušali smo
otkriti tajnu njegova
uspjeha...
One of hotel’s
‘trademarks’, events
manager, Josip Friščić,
is a person who has
been delighti ng his
clients and guests for
almost 30 years. We
tried to fi nd the secret
behind his success...

“Dobrodošli u moj raj” rečenica je koju gospodin Friščić kaže čim vas
upozna.
insti tucije.
No,
“Welcome to my paradise” is the fi rst sentence Mr. Friščić says as soon
as he sees you. His ‘paradise’ is, of course, the Regent Esplanade Hotel
where he has been employed for almost 30 years and the place in
which Mr. Friščić has become an insti tuti on. All his clients know him
personally, they all sing his praises and share the feeling of long-term
friendship which is no surprise given his very unique approach. Aft er
every successful event his and general manager’s e-mail inboxes fi ll
with Thank-You notes and there is even a story that the general manager
once said during a meeti ng that he wondered whether he would
ever hear that someone wanted to complain about Mr. Friščić…
Always with a smile on his face, ready to communicate and especially
to joke, Josip Friščić got his educati on in Slovenia where he also
worked for a while. He arrived in Zagreb upon invitati on to work for
the Dubrovnik Hotel which was just about to open at the ti me. Just
before the hotel opened, however, Josip had to fi nish his internship at
83

84
Svi ga klijenti poznaju, svi ga hvale i uz njega
radno mjesto glasilo – voditelj banketa.
No, ako već treba
“Jedno poslijepodne nazvao me naš stalni gost
i pitao imam li mjesta za četrdesetak ljudi za večeru. Rekao sam mu
the Esplanade Hotel; he fell in love so much that he decided to stay
for ever. “At the ti me our food and beverage manager was the famous
Stevo Karapandža, and Čedo Vojnić was the general director”,
Friščić recalls “and our Oleander terrace oft en had as many as 500
guests which meant that the tables had to be booked well in advance
because it was always so crowded”.
When he started working for Esplanade, Josip was fi rst employed as
head-waiter and later on as the maitre d’ at the Taverna Croati ca
restaurant which was at the ti me selected as the best restaurant in
Zagreb and one of the best in Croati a. Aft er that, he became food
and beverage manager and today he is the Meeti ngs & Events Manager.
Mr. Friščić organizes weddings, conferences and other various
events at the hotel which has earned him a reputati on of organizing
‘the best weddings in the city’. If you ask him which wedding he remembers
in the best light, he will diplomati cally reply that ‘all weddings
at the hotel are beauti ful and that all mothers cry when he
brings the bride into the main hall‘. However, if he needs to select
one, it would be the most unusual one, organized at the ti me when
he was in charge of Taverna Croati ca. “One aft ernoon I received a
telephone call from one of our frequent guests asking me whether I
had the space for a dinner for forty people. I told him that I did and
All his clients know him personally, they all
sing his praises and share the feeling of
long-term friendship which is no surprise
given his very unique approach
that I would make the reservati on. At about 7:30 a wedding registrar
entered the restaurant and asked me where the wedding was taking
place. We were all shocked because we had no idea what was going
on but then we realized that our guest wanted a wedding and that
none of the other guests knew anything about it. They all thought
they were coming to a regular dinner. They celebrated unti l the next
morning, of course.”
One of the funniest moments of his career was a wedding organized
in the Emerald Ballroom, one of the most beauti ful venues in Zagreb,
which had impressed one elderly lady so much that she has
approached Mr. Friščić convinced that she was inside a church and
asked: “Excuse me, where is the holy water in here?”
In thirty years of work at the hotel there have been some bizarre
moments but he has never so far experienced a child being born at
the hotel.
What is the secret of his smile and success? Why do clients leave
convinced that they have got the best possible service and how does

86 PREDSTAVLJAMO OSOBLJE HOTELA | INTRODUCING HOTEL STAFF
“Mene moj
posao veseli i zbog toga mi ništa nije teško. Osim toga, nastojim biti
korak ispred klijenta. Oni su stručnjaci u svome poslu, ja sam stručnjak
u svome poslu.
A to ljudi cijene.
do ponoći, no ni to mu nije teško, jer uživa u svom poslu.
Jelena i Tamara u slobodno vrijeme,
preko student-servisa, rade s tatom, pomažući mu u organizaciji
banketa.
jedne sijede vlasi...
he accomplish that? We decide to ask him personally. “My job makes
me very happy and that is the reason why nothing is too hard. And
not only that, I am always trying to be one step ahead of my clients.
If they are experts in what they do, I am the expert in my job. As
soon as my clients approach me asking for an event (of any kind), I
know in advance what they might need and where there might be
problems and that is the moment when I manage to save the situati
on before it happens. And people appreciate that. For example,
there was a famous IT company organizing a very big presentati on
at the hotel and their equipment got stuck at the border. And since
I have good contacts with our technical supply partners, in only two
hours we managed to get 30 people to install the equipment the IT
company needed so that everything was ready for the presentati on.
I was very glad to help my client and, of course, the client was more
than sati sfi ed.”
Not only that, is he always one step ahead his clients and thinks
about everything in advance, but he says that he does not know what
stress is although many people who do the same or similar job feel
the pressure. He fi rst heard about stress when his wife, who is a psychotherapist,
worked on a thesis enti tled ‘’Stress at the Workplace’’;
he thought it very odd.
In thirty years of work at the hotel there have
been some bizarre moments but he has
never so far experienced a child being born
at the hotel
Every day Mr. Friščić organizes several events and someti mes he
needs to stay at the hotel from 7 o’clock in the morning unti l midnight
but that does not bother him because he enjoys his job. He says
that his wife someti mes jokingly says that he prefers being at work
to being at home. At home he also has two daughters, Jelena and
Tamara, who are both studying Economics. In their spare ti me they
work together with their father helping him to organize of banquets.
To fully illustrate Mr. Friščić’s devoti on to his job, you only have to
look at his choice of vacati on: he hasn’t had a real holiday in 12 years
but chooses to spend his holiday ti me from the Esplanade working
elsewhere, mainly on the Brioni Islands. Josip worked his fi rst summer
there aft er an invitati on from the then-President Tuđman and
he’s never looked back. On any other face, twelve years without a
vacati on would probably leave signs of fati gue but not on Josip’s – his
face is as youthful as anyone ten years younger and he doesn’t have
a single grey hair ... or, so he says, with a glint in his eye.

Parsifal je čudesno i zagonetno djelo. Je
li Wagner na kraju svoga života odlučio
glorifi cirati asketi zam koji nikad nije
prakti cirao? Ili je kleknuo pred križem, kako
je tvrdio Nietzsche? Što znači tajno viteško
očajnički čeka spasitelja da ga spasi? U svome
umjetničkom testamentu Wagner kondenzira
Opera
Richard Wagner: Parsifal
26 March 2011, première
Parsifal is a magical and mysterious work. Has
Wagner, nearing the end of his life, decided to
glorify the asceti cism he never practi ced? Or
has he kneeled before the cross, as Nietzsche
claimed? What is the meaning of a secret society
Wagner has condensed his personal moral values,
returning to the basic roots, such as love and
