Our chemical products for rotogravure printing are manufactured exclusively in our own 

establishment. Here we use in the production of chemicals only the highest quality raw 

materials of well-known European manufacturers. In close cooperation with the printing 

industry we constantly study and develop new methods and techniques. Therefore we 

specialize in complex procedures with the highest standards.

Also for your company, we will develop specifi c and highly effi cient chemicals, based on our own, over 

decade’s optimized recipes. Exactly adapted to the respective needs and requirements of each individual

HEIMANN-MEASURING TECHNOLOGY 

PRECISION FOR ROTOGRAVURE CYLINDERS 

We offer the whole range of measuring and testing equipment for rotogravure 

printing, including service and support from one source. Our product range includes 

the latest measuring technology with tailored accessories for surface fi nishing and 

testing of rotogravure cylinders.

Especially in the micron range the µ-surf technology provides precise and informative 3D measurement 

values. With our proprietary software, you are able to check and evaluate the quality of roller textures 

or the geometry of printing cells with the 3D measuring microscope µ-surf-mobile. 

In addition, we fabricate special fi xings for our measuring instruments, which can be quickly positioned 

on the cylinder, in order to achieve accurate measurements and optimum production results. 

Our measuring instrument specialists carry out repairs and calibrations. On request, we will also train 

your staff on site. Also for test measurements or rental of equipment, we are happy to be your partner.

The platinized titanium anodes are used as insoluble anodes in modern 

electroplating bathes for hard chromium plating of rotogravure cylinders. 

Chromic acid solutions which are containing sulphuric acid are used as 

electrolyte. 

Construction of the anode (form anode for hard chromium plating) 

For hard chromium plating of rotogravure cylinders semicircular anodes 

respectively bent conforming anodes, which adapt very good to the cylinder 

shape, are used. In principle there are two different types of anodes (A and 

B) with one or two bows. The platinized anodes basically consist of titanium 

and are offered in three different types of mesh rib (G, N and F) in mesh 

shape. The mostly used standard type N has the following measurements:

The DisCoP electroplating process is a total system replacement using 

non-dissolvable anodes for copper plating tanks. A proprietary anode is 

used to transfer the current from the solution to the cylinder. 

DisCoP has many advantages, including:

The DisCoP System eliminates the conventional titanium basket and 

copper nuggets. The DisCoP plating process works by placing copper 

directly into solution. Micro particles of copper oxide (grain in the 

form of black powder) are dissolved in a premixing circulation tank. A 

copper analyzer measures the copper concentration of the solution. The 

analyzer controls a feeder that adds copper levels and a feeder must be 

installed to introduce the dissolved copper into the plating tank. These 

components are all located on the DisCoP Mixing Tank. The titanium 

anode basket must be replaced with a new non-dissolvable anode. 

Increased quality, savings in production time and elimination of the need 

for additional sulfuric acid will assure a fast return on your investment.

The DM 5E is a battery-operated wall thickness gauge for simple 

applications which is both handy and easy to use. It has automatic probe 

recognition, for dialog probes (the DA 5 series), and therefore offers

measuring instrument is suitable for measurement of wall thickness on

The world-wide known Dot-Check consists of a microscope with a 

high resolution CCD camera and a computing unit with monitor. The 

microscope is equipped with a special base so that it can be set up 

directly onto the cylinder. Two adjustable screws ensure an additional

Two measuring lines are administered in the image onscreen. The

CheCk-master ii 


The CHECK-MASTER II s an advanced measuring instrument for 

automatic measurement of all types of cells. Its main application is in 

situations where the highest accuracy and the ease of use are of great 

importance. Many additional accessories allow it to be used for final 

checking and goods inwards checking of rotogravure cylinders. 

Unlike Dot-Check, the measurements are taken automatically. False 

measurements due to incorrect operation are hereby excluded. 

The basis of this new measuring system is the world-wide known Check- 

Master microscope, which has been substantially modified and equipped 

with a digital camera having a high-performance image processor running 

under Windows 7 and a high-resolution monitor. 

The user surface can be individually modified to ensure optimum ease 

of use for every application. Due to help facilities operating of the 

CHECK-MASTER II has still become more easy and comfortable in addition 

to the already existing possibilities offered by Dot Check and CHECK- 

MASTER. The illumination of the microscope is adjusted fully automatically 

and operation is as usual, extremely simple. Only a PC mouse and 

keyboard are used to operate the instrument.

Description: 

CHECK-MASTER II is a combination of an image processing system and 

a high precision video microscope. Operation is made via mouse and AT 

keyboard. The Check-Master program is Windows 7 compatible. 

The design of the microscope ensures parfocality (i.e. the image remains 

sharp while the objective is being changed) and a motordriven coarse and 

fine adjustment of focusing simplifies operation considerably. 

The 1/2" high-resolution digital camera magnifies the image from the 

objective and illumination unit to 20 times its original size. The digital 32bitsignal 

is fed to the computer via a flexible cable. Illumination is made by an 

LED lamp with long service life. Over-exposure of the image is not possible 

because the lighting level is automatically adapted to the reflection. This 

ensures that the signal to the converter is always at its maximum level. 

The digital signal is analysed pixel by pixel using an image processing 

system and is processed several times according to contrast and

The sum of all the pixels that are covered by a cell represents the surface. 

The length and width of the cell are determined and put out as longitudinal 

and transverse diagonals. The measured cells are automatically highlighted 

in red on the monitor for visual checking. 

The screen size is determined by the position of the cell in relation to the 

neighbouring cell. The depth is determined by focusing on the surface (zero 

point) and then focusing on the bottom of the cell. IFC and a trend bar 

support the depth measurement. 

When carrying out an automatic "cylinder measurement" (from one tone 

to several tones in several ribbons), all the measured values and images are 

stored. These can be kept for future checking and repeat measurement of 

surfaces and diagonals.

This newly developed mobile measuring system was specially designed 

for the surface inspection of large component parts, such as rotogravure 

cylinders. Due to its compact design with bend optics it is largely

Standard Doctor Blade 

The standard doctor blade offers an even doctor blade peak which 

results in a constant doctoring on all printing cylinders. The tonal

blade. The specially polished peak moreover guarantees a rapid stripefree 

printing start. 

Lamella Doctor Blade 

It is the superior self-sharpening specialized doctor blade with a 

rounded lamella. The inner edge of the lamella is edged; the area of 

contact is rounded, very smooth, highly polished and ready for usage. 

The parabolic profile of the standard – lamella is successfully in use. 

It optimizes the resistance towards printing bends, achieves the best 

doctoring possible on the whole lamella width. Upon request another 

type of lamella with a different edge and modified contact angles can

Stainless Steel Blade 

These doctor blades are the perfect solution for corrosive water 

based inks, coatings and varnishes. They are being used for printing

Ultra Doctor Blade 

This premium doctor blade has a specific coating which was designed 

for the elimination of scumming and streaking. Ideally this doctor blade 

is used for printing volumes of short up to medium-length. Because of 

the fine surface and the even wear and tear characteristics of the doctor 

blade’s peak the durability of the printing cylinder will be increased. 

Wedge Doctor Blade 

The specially sharpened doctor blade‘s peak eventuates in an 

increased thickness and stability of the doctor blade and reduces the 

misalignments of the area of contact at the same time that are caused 

by a too high printing pressure und too high press speeds. The sharp 

edge of the doctor blade and the stiff peak of the doctor blade yield a 

clean doctoring with reduced break offs of the peak. This doctor blade is 

furnished with a standard wedge sharpening of 15°. 

Soft Doctor Blade 

This carbon steel doctor blade is coated with a material based on nickel, 

which shows a good resistance against corrosive inks, coatings and 

varnishes. The soft doctor blade is especially suitable for water based 

inks as it shows anticorrosive characteristics. The soft self-curing coating 

significantly reduces the occurrence of score line formation. Soft doctor 

blades have a very soft and flexible area of contact. 

Doctor Blade with rounded edge 

This doctor blade with a flat 30° sharpening is equipped with an 

enhanced rigidity and a reduced bend, which is evoked by a high printing 

pressure and fast printing Press Rooms. The thin peak of the doctor 

blade eventuates in a clean ink application and helps with reducing the 

occurrence of scumming, as well as a long durability. The peak enlarges 

proportionally to a 3° sharpening. On request other sharpening are 

possible as well.

Synthetic doctor blades 

The main operational fields of the synthetic doctor blades are the 

packaging industry, the fold package manufacture, the label industry, the 

production of envelopes and many coating applications. This reasonable 

doctor blade enables the operation of virtually all flexographic printing 

applications with its high resistivity to chemical substances and solvents. 

It has a lithely doctoring and thus supports the longevity of the ceramic 

anilox roller. This lock-up doctor blade is often used in combination with 

a metallic working doctor blade, whereby the costs and the cutting risks 

can be reduced. Particularly mentionable is its exceedingly hydrophobic 

feature by what it is predestinated for water based applications. 

Blade (Blade support) 

A blade is used when the pressure on the doctor blade is too high or 

the proportion of the clamp is not optimal. The deflection of the doctor 

blade has to be prevented to guarantee a evenly sharp and constant area 

of contact. The backing blade caters for a perfect flatness and rigidity 

and guarantees a reliable support for the doctor blades. With a material 

intensity twice as much as the doctor blade, the function of the blade is 

used perfectly.

Using measurement technology for quality assurance in print is a 

universally accepted practise this days. SpectroDens is your all-purpose, 

modern measurement device. Whether it be in pre-print for verifying 

proofs, for ongoing quality control at the printing press, during delivery 

inspection of paper and print products or in a color lab, SpectroDens 

is exceptionally suitable, whatever your application. Thanks to the 

individually adjustable display functions, you can quickly set up the

Two devices in one 

The product name alone suggests the multiple uses of the device. 

As a spectro-densitometer, SpectroDens combines the qualities of a 

highly accurate spectro-photometer and an easy-to-use densitometer. 

Measurement is spectral, i.e. the entire color information – the spectral 

fingerprint of the color – is precisely registered. The measured spectral 

data is converted into measurement data for descriptive analysis and

polishing machines in the electroplating department as well as the 

doctor blade pressure on proof printing presses and production run can

These measuring results are important factors to achieve constant 

production conditions for cylinder production and for printing presses.

N-5000 Pressure Measuring Unit is an electronic test equipment with 

digital display. The measuring range was designed up to 5000 N. High 

measuring exactness (+/- 0.2 %) is achieved by a pressure transducer. 

The measuring principle is based on the DMS-technique. Within a 

temperature range of 0 to 70 °C this measuring unit is temperature 

compensated. An overload protection of 50 % guarantees troublefree 

function even with extreme load. 

Measuring arrangement A shows measurement of impression pressure 

on polishing machines. The pressure measuring unit is directly fixed to 

the aluminium plate and guarantees a reliable measuring result for any 

angle of attack. 

Control of doctor blade impression pressure is effected like shown in 

measuring arrangement B. The pressure measuring unit is located on a 

prism which is directly placed on the blade point. The measuring result 

corresponds to the real active blade pressure, which is unfortunately not 

always displayed exactly on rotogravure presses. 

THE COMPLETE MEASURING SYSTEM IS CALIBRATED BY THE

Short description: 

The QFID-100HR measures automatically samples of all kinds. He includes 

both, a headspace- sampler and a gas chromatograph. Fast, reliable and 

with a very high precision the headspace-samples will be analyzed. The 

instrument can separate 18 most important solvents (the analyses of 

different solvents is possible). A complete analyse of a 20ml HSS-vial needs 

approx. 8 minutes. The result will be printed out in mg/m², for example. 

The instrument is easy to handle because of the auto sampler. The 

operation does not make it necessary anymore to have qualified personnel. 

The analyse consists of 3 steps: 

1. Cut out a defined quantity of the sample (e.g. 50 cm²), give it into the HSS 

vial of 20 ml and lock it 

2. Put it into the heating block 

3. Announce the sample at the PC --- Ready! 

Systembeschreibung: 

The QFID-100HR integrates a headspace-sampler and an EPC gas 

chromatograph. The headspace-sampler works automatically in the 

system, which aims at a high reproducibility. This system is precise 

pressure controlled. The EPC gas chromatograph increases the carrier 

gas pressure dependent of the retention time. A special chromatographic 

column separates all solvents in a special analyse-oven. The oven can 

be controlled heated between room temperature and 200 °C. Only by 

controlling pressure and temperature a stabile retention time is possible. 

The sample, which is separated into the different solvents, gets after 

the oven to the Flame Ionisation Detector (FID). The FID amplifier sends 

analogue signals to the PC, where you can see the result.

The REA PC-Scan incorporates a Software package and a measuring 

device (Laser Device). The Laser Device has a built in measuring unit with 

a diode red light laser driven by a motor. Measurements are transferred 

to the Software for evaluation. 

The evaluation is divided into two parts. One part according to ISO/IEC 

15416 (CEN or ANSI evaluation) the other part according to Symbology 

specifications and/or standards. In case of EAN Codes the international 

Standard ISO/IEC 15420 is the reference for the traditional evaluation. 

Against the standards and specifications measured values are presented 

clearly on the screen. 

The Screen shows the two evaluation methods at the same time. ISO/ 

IEC 15416 method evaluates in detail the reflectance profile with 

different aspects. Quality is presented in 5 steps. The user is able to 

preset a quality requirement according to the application or material 

characteristics. 

The traditional evaluation gives detailed metric results, bar width and 

positions as extreme and average values direct on the screen. In a table 

detail values for each bar and space. 

As well as printed codes the REA PC-Scan is able to measure positive and 

negative Film Masters according to ISO/IEC 15421.

Optional Codes 

This software has optional extra symbologies. The measuring program 

is also included in this package. Unknown Codes or random samples 

can be measured by the measuring program. This is useful for color 

contrast evaluation in preprint or to evaluate unreadable bar codes. 

Film platen 

The Film platen has a 1 cm slit instead of the 3 cm slit in the standard 

platen. A positive and negative Film Master is included for calibration 

purposes. 

Adaptor for curved surfaces 

This option is a special bottom plate prism. This supports the 

measurement of bar codes on circular bodies like cans, bottles and 

beakers. A defined position is required for measuring. Bar code have to 

be printed in ladder form on curved surfaces.

automatiC Cylinder CleaninG system – azr 

for rotogravure presses

The patented cleaning units are firmly assembled at the machine frame. 

AZR starts operation with a speed of 5.000 rph. The required solvent 

is taken from the main solvent supply by software controlled valves. 

Solvent is directed to the spray nozzles and sprayed directly onto the 

cylinder edges and axles. 

Depending on programming, solvent consumption per printing 

unit varies between 4 and 8 l per printing hour. 

Advantages: 

• No colour pigments remain on the cylinder front sides. The cylinders 

can be removed from the press with clean front sides and do not 

have to be washed in a washing machine. 

• Degree of soiling of the press in the splash-guard area sensibly 

decreases. Therefore time for cleaning after production can be clearly 

reduced. 

• These evident advantages have a favourable effect in more than 700 

units installed world-wide. With our automatic cylinder cleaning 

system we have developed an equipment which meanwhile is part of 

all new rotogravure presses.

The printing process causes contamination as paper dust and chalk 

precipitation on the impression roller. In such regions which are not 

covered by the paper web, ink precipitations are incured. 

Up to now, the impression rollers conventionally have been cleaned 

manually by cleaning rags impregnated with solvent respective by 

pouring toluene between the paper web and the impression roller. 

These methods are very time-consuming and not very efficient, as 

the required quantity of toluene is difficult to meter. Furthermore the 

workers are exposed to very high solvent pollution. 

Due to intensive development and innovation, we could automate this 

method of impression roller cleaning. 

The APR automatic impression roller cleaning system works as follows: 

On switched-off ESA-Station (electrostatic printing support station), 

i. e. impression roller print „on“ and speed between 0 and 5000 rph, 

solvent is sprayed by a spray bar between paper web and impression 

roller by means of an automatic control system. Therefore the released 

contamination is picked up and transported away by the slowly running 

paper web. 

Advantages of the system: 

• The sensitive rubber impression roller is protected. Cleaning of the 

impression roller is absolutely guaranteed and it does not cause 

damages e. g. due to the use of brushes or mechanical cleaning tools. 

• A great advantage of the APR is clear reduction of set-up time for 

impression roller cleaning. 

• Based on a monthly set-up time of approx. 10 hours, the investment 

in such cleaning system will amortize already after ½ - ¾ year.

The fully automatic cylinder cleaning systems were designed to perform 

a daily cleaning of gravure cylinders or anilox rollers of any size. 

The fast and gentle cleaning process effects that the cylinder is 

completely clean after 10 – 20 minutes and finished for the immediate 

application without causing an attrition of the cylinder. 

The model range reaches a cleaning length from 600 to 5500 mm, on 

request bigger models are possible.

Clean printing products without mechanical damages are of fundamental 

importance for each client. 

Transportation and speed-depending conditions in the rotary press can 

lead to damages at the printing product. 

By means of a silicone coating on the product such damages can be 

avoided. 

For an exact dosed coating with silicone we recommend our Silicone 

Spraying System SIH-1. 

For this system we recommend our silicone oil emulsion SIH 50 %. This 

concentrate has to be deluted with water prior to application. 

The quantity of heads of the Silicone Spraying System can always be
