Principal’s Message
Welcome to Grizzly Country! There is a long and strong tradition of academic rigour and athletic achievement at
Annie Gale School. Our expectations for students are that they work hard and play hard. We have many
supports in place to help students reach their potential as learners and extensive of co/extracurricular activities in
which students are strongly encouraged to participate.
Our vision is to empower students to become caring, respectful, responsible and successful members of our
community and to foster a sense of achievement, belonging and life-long learning. As a dynamic learning
community, we provide access, choice, equity and excellence. Recognizing that our school reflects the complex
socio-economic and cultural realities that exist in the world today, our vision is to:
enable students to be self-directed learners;
enable students to live as social, moral and ethical citizens; and
promote analytical and critical thinking skills in a current world.
At Annie Gale School we believe that:
students learn best when they are afforded the opportunity to:
apply and expand current knowledge;
construct meaning;
draw on previous learning experiences;
experience success;
learn from each other; and
recognize the significance of life-long learning.
students are responsible for their own learning and are to:
ask questions
attend Homework Club as needed
check D2L for daily, weekly and monthly assignments
complete and hand in assignments
do the best they can
make up missed work when absent.
study
good teaching:
allows students to be active participants in their learning;
incorporates broad based assessment for learning;
is differentiated and accommodates diverse student learning needs;
provides a variety of authentic learning opportunities, activities and experiences; and
teachers are learners who need the support, encouragement and opportunity to:
develop, implement, and reflect on new teaching strategies;
familiarize themselves with and use new technologies;
learn from colleagues;
research new ideas and practices; and
strengthen cross curricular ties.
parents/guardians working in partnership with the school need to provide an environment that supports
learning and success for their adolescent by:
setting up a regular time and location for homework to be completed
checking to ensure homework is completed
ensuring that their adolescent attends Homework Club as needed
accessing HomeLogic (check on attendance & assignment completion)
whenever possible, decisions should be made collaboratively in ways which involve all members of our
school community (i.e. students, parents/guardians and staff).
This student handbook is filled with information about the routines, procedures and policies of Annie Gale
School. Students and their parents/guardians are asked to read this document and highlight key areas. If you
have any questions, please contact your Teacher Advisor who will be more than happy to answer your
questions.
achieve academic success.
Programme
Teacher Advisor Programme
The Teacher Advisor Programme at Annie Gale School is designed to complement the instructional programme by
assisting students in organizing their time and talents effectively as members of our school community. The focus
is on success in learning. Students are assigned to one Teacher Advisor (TA) and begin every day with TA. Active
participation in TA has other benefits that affect individuals and the school as a whole. TA is an important and
compulsory part of every student’s learning programme at Annie Gale School! The Teacher Advisor monitors
student achievement and attendance and is the first contact with the home should problems occur.
Baseline Testing
At the start of the year all students are given a baseline test in reading, writing and mathematics. This information
is used by teachers to personalize student learning to better meet student needs. Students are tested at the end of
the year using the same tests. Teachers compare this data to the start of year data. This analysis allows the
teacher to make thoughtful informed adjustments to the direction and emphasis of the next year’s instruction.
No Zero Policy
Students must work hard to earn a zero at Annie Gale School. We want to know what the student understands
so that we can increase comprehension of the required content. This is only possible if the student hands in his
or her work. Therefore, students who fall behind in their work will be required to attend mandatory in school
work sessions until caught up. As well, parents/guardians will be contacted to set aside time at home for the
student to complete late assignments.
Homework Club
Homework Club is an afterschool programme for students who need help with their homework or for students
who are behind on their work. The club runs from 2:35 to 3:25 pm Monday to Thursday in the Learning
Commons. Two teachers (one Mathematics/Science and one ELA/Social Studies) help students on a first come
first served basis. It is a great place for students to do their homework before heading home for the day.
5
Report Card Follow-up
For each student who is failing one or more courses at the end of each reporting period, a letter is mailed to the
parent/guardian inviting them to the Parent/Guardian-Student-Teacher Conferences. The student’s behaviour is
reviewed and a plan put in place to help the student reach their potential as a learner.
Attendance Policy
There is a strong positive correlation between students who attend school every day and do their work, and high
achievement. To that end, our Attendance Policy tracks student attendance and requires teachers to contact
parents/guardians when students have been absent a certain number of days. Excessive absences may result
in the student being placed on an Attendance Improvement Plan (AIP).
Provincial Achievement Test (PAT) Review
When the Provincial Achievement Test results are released to the school mid-September, each of the four core
departments, do an analysis of the results. After a discussion of areas of strength and weakness, teaching
practices are adjusted to better ensure student success on these tests.
Rich Extended Programme
Research shows that students, who have a well-rounded life, tend to achieve higher marks in school. In addition
to a rigorous academic programme, Annie Gale School students have a wide range of extended programme
choices in which to participate. We strongly encourage students to be involved in at least one club, intramural
sport, or athletic team. The gym is open during the lunch break with different activities available to students
which vary over the year.
HOME REVIEW
In addition to the BEAR Necessities, all students should have a regular schedule of home review or study. If
assignments that students are required to complete cannot be finished in class, then they are to be completed
for homework. The Calgary Board of Education regulation (3066) states “in the Junior High school, pupils are
expected to study from one-half to one hour per school night.” We ask parents/guardians to support the school in
promoting this important part of your adolescent’s education.
Students,
when work is assigned, make sure to take home all that is needed to do the work. Forgetting the proper
book, papers, map, etc. creates problems completing the assignment at home.
use the D2L course that your teacher has created to access all information. You can also communicate with
your teacher via D2L or email.
ASSESSMENT
Students will be assessed to measure growth in skills and understanding of curricular outcomes. Assessment
will take a variety of forms from group to individual, project to test, presentations to essays. Rubrics, scoring
guides and other methods of feedback will be provided to students in order to monitor their ongoing
understanding of concepts.
Scheduled Evaluations
If a student is absent excused on the date of a test, assessment or assignment it is the student’s responsibility to
meet with the teacher and schedule a time to complete the assessment (may be in Homework Club). Students
who do not take the opportunity to do so may end up with a failing mark in the assessment. When possible,
students must contact the teacher PRIOR to the exam, quiz etc. being written. An absence is excused by the
parent/guardian calling the Attendance Line (274-2240, ext. 1) before the start of the school day. Students who
regularly are absent on assessment dates will have to provide a doctor’s note or copy of prescription in order to
write the assessment late.
Please note students are required to complete all assessments to ensure that they demonstrate their
understanding of the course material and are properly prepared for the final course examination. However,
students who are absent unexcused will be expected to complete missed assessments. At the
discretion of the teacher, this assessment may or may not be included in the overall mark of the student.
Final Examinations are on May 13 and June 21-27, 2013. Students must write these examinations on the
assigned date. A student can only be excused if ill (doctor’s note required).
6
Individual Responsibilities
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE STUDENT (ALBERTA SCHOOL ACT, CHAPTER S-3, PART 1, SECTION 12)
A student shall conduct him/herself so as to reasonably comply with the following code of conduct:
be diligent in pursuing the student’s studies (complete all assigned work to the best of your ability);
attend school regularly and punctually (be here every day, for every period on time);
co-operate fully with everyone authorized by the Board to provide education programmes and other services
(follow the direction of every adult working in the building providing you are not being put in harms way);
comply with the rules of the school (follow the rules of the school, most of which are outlined in this
handbook);
account to the student’s teachers for the student’s conduct (take responsibility for your actions and carry out
discipline as set out by your teacher or an administrator);
RESPECT the rights of others (respect others’ right to learn and be treated with dignity; respect others’
property; respect yourself).
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE TEACHER
To recognize that their primary responsibility is the education of students in the classroom. To treat others
with dignity, courtesy and respect.
To strive for high standards of professional competence with regard to curricular expertise, classroom
instruction and human interaction.
To take an active and supportive role in student activities beyond the classroom.
To be consistent with the overall direction of the school and to give strong support to the various
programmes of the school.
To extend a greater degree of flexibility and understanding than the student in the resolution of problems.
To inform parents/guardians when the academic or behavioural performance of their son or daughter is
unsatisfactory.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ADMINISTRATION
The members of the administration must assume the responsibilities of teachers, and additionally:
Facilitate the activities of the classroom and encourage and support creative and unique instructional
methods.
Give personal and professional support to the staff, both corporately and individually.
Establish and maintain an atmosphere of safety, trust and security that is conducive to learning and
teaching.
Be supportive of special functions, programmes and extra-curricular activities.
Establish a continuous assessment of school operations and procedures, and make adjustments when
necessary.
Provide leadership in developing the overall direction of the school as an agency within the community.
Foster an atmosphere wherein open communication can occur between staff, students and
parents/guardians.
Provide interpretation of Calgary Board of Education policy, and maintain liaison with the CBE and its
representatives.
Ensure adherence to the requirements of Alberta Education.
Honour the voice of the Annie Gale School Council.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PARENT/GUARDIAN
Adolescents need structure and clear boundaries. They also need the support, encouragement and guidance of
their parents/guardians. When the beliefs, values and expectations of the school are similar to those of the
parents/guardians, the student will experience the most success.
Parents/Guardians are expected to be supportive of school policies and regulations, and to provide school
officials with the parental/guardian point of view.
Parents/Guardians are to expect that concerns and suggestions will be given due consideration. Since the
school must ensure the education of all students, they should recognize as well that a change in policy or
procedure for the specific circumstances concerning their son or daughter would not always be feasible.
Parents/Guardians will accept the responsibility of ensuring the level of preparedness which enables
adolescents to participate successfully in the daily activities and routines encompassing the learning of the
adolescent at school. Parents/Guardians should be expected to ensure appropriate study facilities and to
encourage good study habits for their son or daughter.
7
Technology
Annie Gale School is committed to providing a technological environment that is personalized and allows each
student the opportunity to receive a quality education as well as reaching their personal learning goals. To meet
the individual needs of each student, many resources have been directed to the initiation and implementation of
the necessary technologies.
Each student and teacher has access to TV’s, VHS/DVD players, SMART boards, video and digital cameras, a
variety of printers, scanners, and over 170 computers (laptop and desktop) that are connected to the local area
network (LAN) via a wired or wireless connection. Computers can be accessed from a variety of locations within
the school. Each computer that is connected to the LAN has the ability to access the Internet. Each student at
Annie Gale School is provided with a folder on the LAN where work from any class can be safely stored. Annie
Gale School is a “disc-free” environment therefore we ask that each student utilize only their network folder, their
digital student email and D2L lockers for the means of saving materials.
At Annie Gale School, each student is fortunate to have all of the above resources available to them on a daily
basis to utilize and aid them in achieving their personal educational goals. Students are asked to adhere to the
following list of expectations to ensure that the resources are enjoyed by many generations of students to come.
Students are responsible for acquiring the knowledge of how to log onto the Annie Gale School LAN and
save their work into their folders. Sessions will be provided at the beginning of the school year.
Students are responsible for not over-taxing the resources (i.e. printing, bandwidth, time on computer,
exceeding file saving memory limitations, etc.).
Students are responsible for using the resources in the manner that is not destructive to the equipment.
Students must be conscious of the legal limitations of copying and ensure that copyright laws are followed.
Students will not reveal their network password to anyone under any circumstances.
Students will not tamper with other student’s file folders. Students have a moral obligation to log on and off
as themselves.
Student I.D. card must be presented in order for you to have your network password changed.
Technology resources are only to be used for school related assignments.
To access any computer in the school you must have your student ID card and it must be visible.
NETWORK USE AND SECURITY
Security on our high traffic network is a significant priority. Accordingly, students are required to conform to
Calgary Board of Education Administrative Regulation 1062-Responsible Use of Electronic Information
Resources (http://www.cbe.ab.ca/policies/policies/AR1062.pdf ) when using the network.
Misuse of school technology includes, but is not limited to:
any attempt to harm or destroy data of another user or above listed networks;
being involved in gaming or gambling;
playing games, downloading or installing software or restricted files;
sending or displaying inappropriate messages or pictures;
trespassing into other people’s folders, work or files;
using any email or chat or bulletin board system except CBE mail;
using electronic medium for plagiarising;
using other people’s passwords or accounts;
using pages such as Facebook, Nexopia, Youtube, Myspace, twitter, etc.;
viewing or visiting inappropriate websites; or
violating copyright laws.
Any misuse of the computer network will result in disciplinary action which may include removing the student’s
access to the network.
8
DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP
Throughout the Calgary Board of Education, students now have the ability to utilize the LAWN (Learner
Accessible Wireless Network) in their school. This new access point means that students are able to bring in
their own personal devices (laptops, iPhones, Blackberry, iPod Touch, PSP, DS, etc.) to connect to the Internet
for their school work! There is not an expectation that students must bring in or have their own device and those
students who do not have a personal device to utilize in our school will continue to have access to other learning
technologies.
With this ability comes a new level of responsibility and understanding which we will ensure all students have
prior to accessing the LAWN. Our students’ safety in an online environment is of utmost importance to us and
learning how to be a good Digital Citizen will increase your adolescent’s awareness and understanding of the
power and perils of the Internet but will undoubtedly enhance their learning opportunities! All students will be
completing several Digital Citizenship activities and learning tasks in all classes which we believe will better
equip them to make the best use of this new opportunity in a safe and respectful manner. This learning will be
ongoing. Sites that are currently blocked in our school will remain blocked on a student's own device.
The use of personal devices in our school will be at the absolute discretion of our staff members at all times and
our students will be asked to respect this expectation. It is our intention to have all students have access to their
own devices or school technology resources regularly. The above is from
http://www.innovativelearning.ca/seclearntech/ webaware-index.asp
The use of the LAWN in our school will be to leverage our students’ abilities to:
access, critically assess and communicate information and understanding
collaborate during inquiry
construct personal knowledge and meaning
interact with other learners
organize and manipulate data
personalize their learning
personalize their understanding
seek alternative viewpoints
Students will not have access to school servers or printers through the LAWN. As such they will need to utilize
Their CBe-mail or D2L storage lockers or purchase and use a USB device to transfer files to the school network.
No software will be provided to students. School classes may utilize software applications that the student does
not have on their device.
The following activities are prohibited and will be addressed on an individual basis as needed:
harassing, insulting or attacking another person or their reputation
plagiarism of online content
sending, posting, displaying or using obscene language/messages or pictures or information about oneself
or others
sharing of usernames and passwords for other people to use
tampering with any computer accessories, hardware or software
texting or gaming
trespassing in other’s folders, work areas or files
use of someone else’s CBE account or access to the lawn
use of technology or accessing sites not approved by staff
utilizing another student’s device without permission
viewing websites through a proxy server
accessing inappropriate electronic material (defined in the CBE Administrative Regulation 1062) which
includes but is not limited to:
any vulgar or lewd depiction or description of the human body except for artistic or historical depictions
of nudity or anatomical, scientific or medical information, used in an educational context;
any material that has been publicly labelled as being strictly for adults;
any description of any sexual act which is not part of the approved program of studies used in an
educational context;
9
graphic description or depiction of violent acts, including murder, rape, mutilation, torture or serious
injury, except for material used in an educational context;
material encouraging the use of any illicit or illegal drugs, tobacco or alcohol, except for material used in
an educational context, such as drug abuse statistics;
Our expectation is that our students will become educated and responsible Digital Citizens. If, however students
breach any of the above, each situation will be dealt with on an individual basis and may result in:
police intervention or legal action
restriction of use of or confiscation of personal device
restriction or loss of technology privileges
school based disciplinary consequences
Lastly, it is important that parents/guardians and students remember the following as we begin this new
educational opportunity:
devices can only be utilized for educational purposes.
devices can only be utilized when students are under the direct supervision of a teacher in an approved area
of the school.
misuse will be determined by the staff and administration.
the school is not able to provide technical support for student devices.
the school is not responsible for the loss, damage, or theft of student electronic devices.
We view Digital Citizenship as a shared responsibility between students, their families and the school. We
appreciate families taking time to discuss this new opportunity with their adolescent and supporting the work of
the school in moving it forward.
10
CYBER BULLYING
Cyber bullying is defined as the use of technology to create messages that threaten, harass, humiliate or
intimidate others in a deliberate manner. It might be anonymous, from a former friend or from someone you
know. Some forms of online bullying are considered criminal acts.
What Can You Do To Prevent or Minimize Cyber Bullying?
Guard your personal identifying information.
Tell your parents/guardians.
Exit from conversations that make you feel uncomfortable or at risk.
Do not reply to a threatening or harassing message. Keep a record of these messages – do a screen
capture or print the page.
Never write anything in a message you would not want the world to read.
Never use someone’s picture without their permission.
On social network sites such as Facebook, Nexopia, MSN, Twitter, limit who can access your conversations.
Block anyone who is not respectful.
Do not join online conversations where bullying is taking place.
Take a stand against cyber bullying.
CELL PHONE AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Due to safety and security concerns the use of cell phones, PDAs, pagers and other communication devices
will not be permitted at any time while in the building. Students who have communication devices will be
expected to keep them in their lockers during school time. Students who abuse this policy will have the
communication device confiscated and returned at the end of the day for a first offence. For a second offence
the parent/guardian will be required to pick up the device from the Main Office.
iPods and other listening devices should be left at home. However if an individual teacher warrants their use in
their class students may bring the device but do so at their own risk. During the school day these devices are not
permitted outside the classroom except during the lunch break. Students wishing to listen to their iPod or other
device may do so during the lunch time as long as it does not interfere with others.
Personal cameras and other electronic photographic devices may be used with permission from teachers as this
may be related to school projects. As per the Freedom of Information and Protection Privacy Act of Alberta, you
may not take pictures of others unless you have their permission.
The school CANNOT and WILL NOT be responsible for any lost or stolen items that the student brings to
school. It is the responsibility of the student to keep anything they bring to school secure.
Behaviour and Conduct
At Annie Gale School, student behaviour and the school discipline policy is based on the expectation that all
students will respect the rights and property of others. The policy is guided by the CBE Administrative
Regulation 6001-School Discipline and the five CBE Ends Policies.
Respecting the rights and property of others means that all students have a right to learn, the right to feel safe,
and the right to personal space and property. Interfering with the rights of others can result in removal of certain
privileges, access to the school and its services. Students exhibiting inappropriate behaviour will may be
required to participate in community service.
Successful learning requires an orderly, respectful and cooperative environment. Our expectations are guided by
the Alberta School Act, Calgary Board of Education regulations and the rule of law. More specifically, students are
reminded of the following:
BEHAVIOURAL EXPECTATIONS
Our expectations are that students:
will treat each other and all school personnel with courtesy and respect;
will demonstrate concern and care for the rights and property of others;
will respect the rights of others to learn and to teach;
will be honourable and admit to their mistakes and make amends;
help keep our school environment clean and litter free (food and drink, other than water, are not permitted in
instructional areas);
not use cell phones, PDAs or other communication devices in the school between the hours of 7:00 am – 4:00
pm; and
not visit the campuses of other schools or invite guests to our campus during regular school hours – like all
CBE schools, Annie Gale School is a closed campus.
Behaviours that will likely result in suspension include but are not limited to:
possession of, or active contact with a weapon on a student’s person or in a student’s locker or desk. Students
and parents/guardians are reminded that laser pointers are considered to be a weapon and should not be
brought to school;
use, possession of, distribution, or active contact with drugs, alcohol, or inhalants in school or on school board
property;
threats, extortion, assault. Fighting, intimidation, and harassment will not be tolerated on school property,
while on a school-sponsored activity or while a student is going to and from school. We have a zero
tolerance policy for bullying. We request the assistance of parents/guardians in encouraging adolescents to
seek alternative methods of solving problems. Students who insist on engaging in these activities will face
suspension from school for a period of time. Re-entry to the school following a suspension is conditional
upon a meeting with school administration, parents/guardians and the student(s) involved;
conduct which endangers others;
use or display of improper, obscene, or abusive language. Profane and vulgar language or gestures are not
acceptable in any school-related activity. Words and gestures must be appropriate to the classroom/school
setting;
theft;
wilful damage to school or other’s property;
personal or sexual harassment;
hazing or initiation activities;
disruptive behaviour, wilful disobedience or defiance of authority, interfering with the orderly conduct of classes
or the school;
tampering with fire alarms and safety equipment;
snowballing, snow washing and hazing;
water balloons, water guns, etc.; or
play fighting.
13
INTERACTIONS WITH OTHERS
We expect students to be honourable citizens within and around the Annie Gale School community by being
respectful of the neighbours and service industries around our school. Students are expected to use the
community respectfully and to take care of the environment.
Students are expected to be respectful in conversations especially those that that may occur with students on
Facebook, blogs, cell phone texting or any other form of digital messaging within and outside of school.
INTELLECTUAL HONESTY POLICY
In our pursuit of integrity at Annie Gale School, teachers and students will acknowledge and respect the rights of
creators. Credo: “We acknowledge the intellectual effort of an author, artist, or photographer, just as we respect
the ownership of the ideas of others during a test or an exam.” Authentic learning occurs when students create
and demonstrate their own knowledge.
Students are reminded to cite resources used in their assignments and not to plagiarize the work of others.
Plagiarism, which is substituting or presenting the ideas or work of others as your own, is a serious intellectual
offence and will be dealt with by administration. Teachers will make students aware of the Intellectual Honesty
standards at Annie Gale School. They will teach students how to correctly reference and cite information
(teachers should be able to locate and look at the source of information cited by students). They will carefully
plan and supervise tests and exams. Teachers will communicate intellectual misconduct to administration, note it
in a student’s file, and add it to Activity Tracking (electronic file) in the CBE Student Information Record System
(SIRS).
To be intellectually honest a student must:
For tests or examinations:
refrain from communication of any form with or to fellow students;
refrain from copying another’s answers;
use only materials or equipment that has been approved for use during a test or examination.
For assessments, labs, assignments, or presentations:
create and submit for marks, original work that has been completed through their own or their group’s
effort(s);
credit the creative and intellectual efforts of others (cite sources/information).
Failure to comply with the above will be treated as Intellectual Misconduct, which includes, but is not limited to:
acquiring and using or attempting to acquire and use confidential course and examination materials;
cheating or helping others to cheat. Forms of cheating may include, but are not limited to the use of
unauthorized materials or services, online translating services, sharing answers, plagiarism, or
communicating with others by whispering, passing notes, signalling, exchanging papers, or text messaging;
submitting or presenting the ideas and work of others as your own (plagiarism). This includes permitting
another student to copy homework or a lab write-up;
tampering or attempting to tamper with grades and class records;
using calculators inappropriately. Teachers will advise students as to Alberta Education approved calculators.
Calculators that have built in notes that cannot be cleared or any external support devices are not permitted; or
writing quizzes, tests, or exams for others.
Intellectual Misconduct is a serious offence. Penalties include, but are not limited to:
zero grade on work;
parental/guardian contact by administration;
school suspension; or
suspension with a recommendation to expel to CBE Student Services.
14
DRESS CODE
Students are expected to maintain acceptable dress and grooming standards, reflecting he school’s purpose as
a place of learning and work as well as keeping modesty and safety in mind. Students are expected to remove
and store their jackets, caps/hats, backpacks or other large bags used to carry materials in their lockers before
classes commence. Upon entering the school, caps/hats are to be taken off.
Students are required to adhere to reasonable and respectable standards in dressing and grooming. Clothing
worn by staff and students needs to allow for distraction free and uninterrupted learning to occur between staff
and students and among students.
The school dress policy includes, but is not limited to:
mid-thigh length skirts, dresses and shorts.
neat and clean dressing.
pants worn so underwear is not visible.
shirts long enough to reach the waistline of pants and high enough to cover cleavage.
shirts must have cap sleeves as a minimum.
footwear with a maximum heel of 5 cm (for safety reasons)
Examples of inappropriate dress include:
accessories which could be used as a weapon like chains or spikes.
clothing that is related to gangs or gang activity (e.g. bandanas under ball caps, ICP clothing).
clothing, make-up or props that are considered to be a costume.
halter tops, strapless tops, sports bras, bathing suit tops, muscle shirts.
low slung pants showing underwear.
offensive language and inappropriate messages on clothing (e.g. racist, promoting drugs or alcohol).
pyjama tops or bottoms
sheer clothing.
short shorts.
The school administration are given the authority to require any student not conforming to school dress or
grooming standards, to return home and change before being admitted to class.
SMOKING
In accordance with Calgary Board of Education Policy, all schools and school property are smoke-free
environments. This policy applies to everyone - staff, visitors and students. Provincial law and CBE regulations
provide for fines or suspension for non-compliance. Since it is against the law for adolescents to smoke, a
student found smoking on or around the school property may face suspension from school. A student in
possession of cigarettes or a lighter on school property will face disciplinary action.
SCHOOL CAMPUS
Like all CBE schools, Annie Gale School is a closed campus for the use of registered students and staff.
Visitors, including parents/guardians, must report to the Main Office. Being on school property without
permission is considered trespassing and is fineable by the Calgary Police Service. Students should not invite
friends from other schools to visit them at our school.
Finally, Annie Gale School students are not to visit other schools during the school day as defined by Annie Gale
School and other schools. Students who do so may face suspension.
15
School Attendance
ATTENDANCE/TARDINESS
Regular attendance contributes to success at school. Punctuality is a shared responsibility of students,
parents/guardians, and school staff. Students are expected to attend school every day and arrive on time for
each class.
It is difficult, if not impossible, for students who are absent for extended periods of time to reach their potential as
learners. As defined by the Alberta School Act there are very few reasons that are acceptable for students to be
absent from school.
The Act states that a student is excused from attending school on a day on which the school is open if:
(a) the student is unable to attend by reason of sickness or other unavoidable cause;
(b) the day is recognized as a religious holiday by the religious denomination to which the student belongs;
(c) the principal of the school has suspended the student from school and the suspension is still in effect;
(d) the student has been expelled from a school and as not been given permission to enrol in another school
Cumulating absences may result in a student being placed on an Attendance Improvement Plan (AIP). Students
coming late lose valuable learning time and interfere with the learning of their classmates. We wish to promote the
best conditions for learning and teaching and to foster habits that prepare students well for the world of work. If a
student is late more than once in a week or regularly late every week, the student will be asked to participate in
community service or sit a detention.
Additional consequences for students with attendance/tardiness issues will also include the loss of privileges
until the situation improves. Privileges which students may lose could include: attending school dances,
participating in intramural activities, attending school sporting events, off-site activities, trying-out for or playing
on school teams, or year-end farewell. Our intention is to have students attend school on a regular basis and to
have students attend school on time.
Parents/guardians are required to provide a reason for lates and absences in person, by phone, note, e-mail
(anniegale@cbe.ab.ca) or fax on the same day of the late or absence. Students on an AIP need a medical note
or a copy of a prescription in order for their absence to be excused. Parents/guardians can telephone the school
absence line at 403-777-7680 (then press 1) to explain the reason for the late or absence on the school’s
messaging system. If a parent/guardian does not contact the school regarding the late or absence the student
will be marked as unexcused. Unexcused absences will remain unexcused if 48 hours has elapsed from the time
of the absence. There are natural consequences for students who accumulate unexcused lates or absences.
ABSENCES AND HOMEWORK
In the event of an absent the student must:
obtain missed notes, assignments, quizzes and tests.
make up any work missed following the absence.
attend Homework Club to get extra help or clarification with any work missed.
If a student is absent for an extended period, the school requires at least 48 hours to prepare work packages for
students.
EARLY DISMISSAL
Students requesting to leave school before regular dismissal time must bring a dated note. Students must show
this note to the appropriate subject teacher and then report to the office prior to leaving the school. The
parent/guardian must come into the Main Office to collect the student and sign the student out.
ILLNESS AT SCHOOL
Students who are ill should ask the teacher’s permission to report to the office. In the office, parents/guardians
will be contacted regarding permission to go home. Please ensure that you update the school with current
phone numbers for just such a case. Please note that school personnel are not permitted to provide students
with any type of medication.
16
LEAVE OF ABSENCE / FAMILY VACATION
Written notification of any extended absence from school should be given to the office as early as possible prior
to the absence. Students are responsible for all assignments and assessments missed during any absence. If
students are away for longer than two weeks they are asked to meet with the Grade Level Team leader (speak
with their TA to find out who this is) to discuss the plan to lessen the impact of the students absence. Please
note the school is not required to supply an educational package for a student when they are on extended
leaves due to family vacations.
There are 12 weeks over the course of the year that are formal holidays for students in junior high school.
Parents/Guardians are asked to support the work of the school by booking holidays only during these times. Full
year school calendars are posted a year in advance on the Calgary Board of Education website:
http://www.cbe.ab.ca/calendars/default.asp
Final Examinations are on May 13 and June 21-27, 2013. Students must write these examinations on the
assigned date. A student can only be excused if ill (doctor’s note required).
Safety and Security of Our Students
While in the school all students must carry their Annie Gale School ID card.
Staff must wear their CBE ID card in the building.
All visitors, including parent/guardian volunteers, must sign in at the Main Office and wear specified visitor
identification tags.
Students and visitors who do not have their ID cards will be escorted to the office. Students who lose their
ID cards may have them replaced for a cost of $2.00. Students have 24 hours to replace their ID cards
through the office.
Students need to have a hall pass in order to be in the hallways during class instruction.
Visitors, parents/guardians, and volunteers must enter through the front doors during school time.
Students arriving late must enter through the front doors and sign in at the Main Office.
All deliveries to students during school time (lunch bags, projects, homework, etc.) should be made to the
Main Office and not to the classroom.
DRILLS
Evacuation Drills
Evacuation Drills are conducted according to Calgary Board of Education regulations for evacuation and safety.
Instructions are given by teachers in September and practiced throughout the year. At the sound of the alarm
bell, students are to respond immediately by proceeding in single file to the nearest exit. We stress the
importance of moving quickly and quietly throughout the entire evacuation procedure. This includes quiet lines
on exit, orderly lines outside, and a quiet return to class. Maximum cooperation is expected from our students
and visitors during these routine drills. Outside of the school, students are to go to the area assigned to their TA
teacher and quietly stand in single file so the TA teacher can take attendance. Students are NOT to interfere
with proceedings; to do so will result in disciplinary action by administration.
Crisis Drills
Crisis drills are conducted according to Calgary Board of Education regulations and are intended to ensure the
safety of all students and staff. During a crisis drill, students are directed by their supervising teacher to a safe
location. Please note the following:
continuous ringing of the bell means that everyone (students, staff, parents/guardians, visitors) must
move away from the building as there is danger inside the building.
three short bells mean that there is danger outside the building and students and staff must enter the
building quickly or go to another safe location.
parents/guardians are NOT to call the school when the continuous bell is ringing as staff will need all
telephone lines available to contact the emergency services. The staff’s first responsibility is to the
adolescents. Please allow us to take care of all of the adolescents first before responding to your questions.
17
BICYCLES, SKATEBOARDS, ROLLERBLADES, MOTORBIKES AND TRAFFIC SAFETY
The school cannot assume responsibility for bikes parked on the school grounds. Bicycles may be stored in the
bike racks provided and locked with a good quality lock. To minimize theft, students are required to lock bikes
individually. To prevent accidents and possible danger to pedestrians, bicycles, rollerblades and skateboards are
not to be ridden in the school, or on the lawn, sidewalks or parking lot. Loitering at bike racks is unacceptable.
Student motorbikes are prohibited on the school property. Students are expected to obey all cross walk and
traffic light by-laws. It is expected that students will obey the law and wear a bike helmet.
PARENT/GUARDIAN AND EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION
On the first day of school, students are given a package of forms requiring completion. One of these forms is the
Demographic Form. Nothing is sadder than when a adolescent needs their parent/guardian but we are unable
to make contact. Please ensure that your adolescent is never in this situation by making sure that the
parent/guardian and emergency contact numbers are correct and kept up-to-date. As well, information
regarding home address and student allergies need to be current as this information is required by EMS when
responding to an emergency at the school.
STUDENT DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP ZONE
When students are being dropped off or picked up at the school, parents/guardians are expected to park their
vehicle along Whiteridge Way. As per safety regulations, students are not to be dropped off or picked up in
the staff parking area. The staff parking area is out of bounds to students at all times.
Student Services
COUNSELLING
There is a counsellor available to students. Students need only to drop by the Guidance Office and sign up for an
appointment. Students are always welcome. No problem is too big or small; our counsellor is here to help.
Parents/Guardians are also welcome to seek the counsellor’s advice regarding their adolescent at school.
STUDENT LEARNING CENTRE
The Student Learning Centre in the Learning Commons is for students who are on an Individualized Program Plan
(IPP) or who need specialized support. There is a Resource teacher available in the Centre.
SCHOOL NURSE
Need Medical Advice? Want to quit smoking or improve your diet? A Public Health Nurse is available at the
school on a weekly basis to answer any questions you may have about your health. The nurse is also available
for any health related activities within the school or community. See the office for the nurse’s schedule or
contact information.
SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER
Our School Resource Officer (SRO) is a member of the Calgary Police Service. The SRO works with the school’s
administration to address issues of harassment, theft, trespass, assault, and drug or weapon possession or use.
ANNIE GALE SCHOOL WEBSITE
The school’s website is an excellent source of information including: breaking news, upcoming events, D2L,
Parent/Guardian and School Council, course descriptions and more. Bookmark our site:
www.schools.cbe.ab.ca/b686
D2L
D2L is a secure website where teachers post course specific information. Students logon using the same
username and password that they use at school. Once in, a student can view their marks by course, course
outlines, unit timelines, assignments, worksheets and other resources. Parent/Guardians are encouraged to
regularly view the site with their adolescent.
HOMELOGIC
HomeLogic is the parent/guardian and student portal for the Calgary Board of Education. This online
environment allows parents/guardians to check their adolescent’s progress throughout the school year.
HomeLogic is one more tool helping home and school stay connected. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to go
to the site https://sirswebapps.cbe.ab.ca/homelogic/
In order to use HomeLogic, your email address must be on file at the school. Please email the school
(anniegale@cbe.ab.ca) to have your email address added to your adolescent’s demographic information or add
it to the demographic information form sent home with your adolescent in September.
If you need help registering on this site, please refer to HomeLogic Registration Walk Through document found
on the school’s webpage.
The following information can be viewed in HomeLogic:
Attendance – This information will be available for each school day. You will be able to access the class,
date, and reason for the absence. Rather than waiting until the next day to call the school to find out which
class your adolescent missed, you can access the information in real time. Attendance information can also
be printed from your home. Attendance records are legal documents. If there is an error, please contact the
school as revisions can only be made within a few days of the recorded absence. In cases where the
adolescent was marked absent but was late, the adolescent must speak with their teacher to have it
reversed.
Demographics – Although the information will not be editable from HomeLogic, you will be able to see the
basic current information we have about your adolescent at the school. In cases of emergency it is critical
that the information on file is correct. Please contact the school regarding needed revisions.
Period grades –The student's report card marks will be available for parents/guardians to access. They
appear once the marks and comments have been entered into SIRS by teachers.
Schedule – This feature allows you to see your adolescent’s class schedule on any given day for the school
year. The display also includes class times and the teacher’s name.
Task Grades – Some of the teachers at Annie Gale School are using the TeacherLogic Gradebook. For
these classes, parents/guardians have the opportunity to see up-to-date assignment and test marks
Transcript – Parents/Guardians and the adolescent will be able to review the adolescent’s completed
courses final marks. While it is unofficial, this information can also be printed for your convenience.
PARENT/GUARDIAN-STUDENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES
Parent/Guardian-Student-Teacher Conferences provide a valuable opportunity to share information about the
student learning and achievement. Students are expected to be active participants in conferences. Conference
dates can be found on the school calendar and are published monthly in school newsletters. Please visit our
CAFETERIA
The cafeteria space is open and supervised during the lunch break. Students are expected to show courtesy by
cleaning up their own eating area. Due to cutbacks meals will not be served this year. However, once a week for
fund-raising, food (subs, pizza, etc.) will be brought in to the school to sell.
CONTACTING YOUR ADOLESCENT AT SCHOOL
In order to deliver the message that obtaining an education is valuable, we ask that you not call or text your
adolescent during school hours. As you can imagine you not only interfere with their learning but potentially the
learning of other students. You are welcome to leave a message for your adolescent with the office staff who
will pass on the message.
Emergent situations (e.g. accident or death in the family) are handled differently. If there is an emergency which
requires that you speak with your adolescent on the phone immediately, we ask that you share the emergency
with us so that we can better support your adolescent as they receive the information. Please know that having
to pick up a sibling after school is not considered an emergency. In these cases we will happily pass on the
message to your adolescent at the next break.
DESIGNATED SCHOOL
All children are designated to a particular school based on the address where they reside with their
parents/guardians. If a student moves out of a school’s designated area, the student is still entitled to attend the
school providing the student attends regularly and on time. Administrative Regulation 6091-Student Admissions
and School Choice sections 8 & 10 state:
8 If resident students are admitted to a school, program or special education program outside of their
attendance area, or non-resident students are admitted to a Calgary Board of Education school,
program or special education program, they are only entitled to remain enrolled
(a) in the program to which they were admitted, and
(b) during the completion of the grade sequence to which admission was granted, or
(c) the following grade sequences
(i) Division I, grades 1 to 3;
(ii) Division II, grades 4 to 6;
(iii) for middle schools the grades offered in that middle school;
(iv) Division III, grades 7 to 9; and
(v) Division IV, grades 10 to 12.
10 (1) If a resident student’s family or an independent student is moving to a residence in a different
attendance
area, if the resident student wishes to remain at the designated school, program or special
education program for their former residence after the move to the new residence takes place, they
may remain registered in the former designated school, program or special education program in
order to complete their school year.
(2) If a resident student’s family or an independent student is moving to a residence in a different
attendance area, the resident student may register in the designated school, program or special
education program for the new residence,
(a) if there are sufficient resources and facilities to accommodate the student, and
(b) as long as the parent or independent student provides a copy of the purchase or rental
agreement documenting the move to the new residence.
D2L
Your marks are accessible on D2L. Teachers understand that timely feedback is important for student learning.
As a minimum, on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month marks will be updated in D2L.
Parents/Guardians are encouraged to review the marks folder and speak with their adolescent and the teacher
regarding missing work.
How to Access D2L
1. Open the Internet on your computer.
2. Type in the following address: https://d2l.cbe.ab.ca/
3. The username and password are the ones that the student uses to log on to the school network. There will
be common materials available to all students. For personal information that you may see, please know
that only you can see this information because students have logged on with their own personal username.
FEES
In September, students will receive information regarding fees for the school year.
GRADE 9 FAREWELL
In June there will be a Farewell Ceremony as well as a celebration for Grade 9 students. All grade 9 students
who are attending the school (not suspended) may participate in the Farewell Ceremony. The celebration is
typically an off-site event and therefore only offered to students who are in good standing in the school. This offsite
event is a privilege that is earned.
INTERSCHOOL ATHLETICS
In junior high school, fans are encouraged at home games where the administrators present know them. For
away games, only the parents/guardians are permitted to attend so as to reduce the supervision issues. We
cheer for our team and anyone choosing to be negative about a home or visiting team or its players will be
asked to leave. For home games, student fans
LEARNING COMMONS
The Learning Commons is open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. daily except Fridays when it is open from 7:30 a.m. to
12:30 p.m. In this facility students have access to a variety of materials for research, study and general interest.
The collection includes a wide range of: fiction with a growing number of graphic novels, dual language books, print
encyclopaedias, video and DVD programmes, periodicals and a substantial reference collection. This year we are
pleased to offer eleven new electronic reference titles that can be accessed from any computer in the school as
well as from home. Combined with access to Alberta Education's On-line Reference Centre, students now have a
large array of materials at their fingertips to help with assignments and research in all courses. The school's
catalogue is easily accessed via the "Webcat" link https://64.254.155.7/uhtbin/login.pl
Students are welcome to borrow as many Learning Commons books as they like. Learning Commons books
that are damaged or lost will need to be replaced. It is imperative that families that are unable to pay for lost
books instil in their adolescent the need to safe keep the books loaned to the adolescent. The school cannot
afford to absorb the cost of lost books so all families will have to find a way to pay for lost books.
LOCKERS
All students are assigned a hall locker that may be shared with another student. Many students use lockers as
bulletin boards and students are reminded that material posted should be appropriate and non-offensive. Each
student is issued his/her own physical education tote box. It is the student’s responsibility to keep BOTH lock
combinations a secret and to keep their locker and tote box neat and tidy. Lockers are school property and the
school has the right to search a locker without warning.
Hallway locker changes require office approval. Physical Education tote box questions should be directed to the
Physical Education teacher. The student is responsible for replacing any lost or stolen locks. The replacement
cost is $5.00. A new lock will not be issued until the replacement fee has been paid. Students are not permitted
to supply their own locks. Non-school locks will be cut off of lockers at the student’s expense.
LOST ITEMS
Lost and found items such as watches, jewellery, electronic devices, textbooks and Learning Commons books
are to be turned in at the office. Other items are deposited in the Lost and Found wire cart, which is located
beside the main doors. Unclaimed useable items will be kept or donated. During the Parent/Guardian-Student-
Teacher Conferences, you are asked to check out the Lost Items tables for any items belonging to your
adolescent.
Please report any lost valuables to the office and we will do our best to have them recovered. We would strongly
suggest that students do not bring items to school that they are not willing to lose. The school is not
responsible for the loss, damage, or replacement of personal items.
OPEN HALLWAY POLICY
At Annie Gale School, we have an open hallway policy. This means that students are permitted to eat their lunch
in the hallway during the lunch break, provided all garbage and recyclable materials are put into the proper
containers. We expect all students to show respect for our school facility, which includes the entire building –
both the interior (including hallways, stairwells, washrooms, P.E. change rooms, classroom furniture), as well as
the exterior of the building (including windows and doors) at all times.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Students must change for physical education class. This means wearing Annie Gale School logo clothing to
class. The clothing will be available in September for student purchase. Those students unable to purchase
clothing must make arrangements with their physical education teacher to borrow from the school some gently
used clothing. Students are expected to wear proper footwear for physical education.
Please be aware that any extreme inappropriate behaviour that violates the rights of others in the locker
room, any theft of items, or possession of stolen items or illegal substances may result in permanent
suspension from the locker room and its privileges, with or without warning.
23
SCHOOL AND PARENT/GUARDIAN COUNCILS
The Annie Gale School and Parent/Guardian Councils support the school by serving as a link between the
school, the home, and the community. The meetings of these councils follow one right after the other and are
held the third Monday of the month at 6:00 pm. This group serves as a sounding board for parent/guardian
opinion regarding the school and its programs and becomes actively involved in numerous school initiatives.
Parents/guardians are welcome to attend these meetings and become involved in the life of the school. Please
help support the adolescents in our school by including your voice in the conversation.
SCHOOL OPEN TIME
Due to limited supervision, the main doors will be unlocked at 7:45 am for students. Students are asked to not
arrive before this time as they will have to wait outside regardless of the weather. Only students involved in
morning practices or rehearsals will be admitted into the school earlier than this time by their teacher and under
their direct supervision.
SECURITY OF PERSONAL AND SCHOOL PROPERTY
The school will not be held responsible for the theft of personal belongings or items from your locker or your
person. Electronic devices such as cell phones, iPods and calculators are common targets. Students should be
vigilant at all times with their property. Only store your gym strip in your Physical Education tote box. Students
should not leave items of value in their Physical Education tote box.
Students are expected to accept personal responsibility for their possessions and for any resource they borrow.
It is important that Learning Commons’ books or other resource material available on loan to students be
returned at the required time so that all students in the school have access to these materials. We stress the
importance of individual responsibility for care of possessions. The school will endeavour, as much as possible,
to help recover lost or stolen articles. Students who lose or damage books or materials they have borrowed are
responsible to pay for such loss or damage. Any person guilty of theft or vandalism of school or private
property is liable for restitution and may be suspended by the administration of the school and charged
by the Calgary Police Service.
All students’ personal and school property in their possession should be clearly marked with name, TA and year.
All students are provided with hall lockers. Students are asked to store items of value in their lockers and to
maintain the confidentiality of the lock combination. Please do not bring unnecessary sums of money or objects
of value to school. IN the rare instance where this may be necessary, the office staff will put your item in a
sealed envelope and secure it in the vault for the day. Since lockers are the property of the Calgary Board of
Education, school officials can search both the student and their locker if they have reasonable grounds
to believe that there has been a breach of school regulations or discipline and that a search would reveal
evidence of that breach.
SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS
All students are required to have pictures taken for administrative purposes. A commercial photographer
photographs each student in the fall for our yearbook. In the spring photographs are taken of the Grade 9
students to use for the Grade 9 Composite Picture which is then installed on one of the hallway walls of the
school. There is no cost associated with either picture taking activity. However, many students and
parents/guardians will choose to purchase photograph packages. The cost of these packages varies from year
to year and must be paid for at the time of ordering. On occasion, administrators will photograph students for the
purpose of a permanent record, for example, injuries. These photographs are used only for administrative
purposes and access is restricted to administration.
SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS AND PRESENTERS
Just as a guest in your home is treated a bit better than the regular members of the household, we expect that
Substitute Teachers and Presenters, our guests, will be treated well by our students. These adults are visitors
to our school and require help and cooperation in order to support a positive learning environment for all.
SUPPLIES
Junior High school students are to provide pens, pencils, rulers, erasers, notebooks, binders, paper and
materials as needed throughout the year. During the first class the teacher will explain what supplies the student
will need for that class. The supply lists are also on the school’s website.
TEAMING UP FOR HEALTHY LEARNERS
A comprehensive school health strategy that supports CBE schools through:
teaching and learning
social and physical environment
healthy school policy
partnerships and services
Setting proactive, sustainable goals that impact students in all areas of:
physical activity
healthy eating
positive social behaviours
Annie Gale School students are expected to make healthy food choices. To that end, no energy drinks or
Slurpees are permitted on school grounds.
TELEPHONE
A student phone is located in the main floor south hallway just beside the Main Foyer. This telephone line is for
student access before school, during the noon break and after school so that students can make contact with
their parents/guardian if the need arises. These phone calls are to be quick. If this service is abused, the phone
will be removed for a period of time.
The telephone in the Main Office is a business line. We will take messages from parents/guardians for their
adolescent (calls will not be transferred to classrooms) and announce names of students with messages in the
office just before the lunch and school end of day bells.
TEXTBOOKS
Student textbooks will be signed out to students at the beginning of the school year. It is the student’s
responsibility to maintain the books in good condition. If books are damaged, lost, or stolen the student and
parent/guardian are responsible for the replacement cost of the books. Another book will not be signed out until
this requirement is met. It is imperative that families that are unable to pay for lost books instil in their adolescent
the need to safe keep the books loaned to the adolescent. The school cannot afford to absorb the cost of lost
books so all families will have to find a way to pay for lost books.
TIMETABLE
Students receive their year’s timetable during the first days of school. You will notice that the complementary
courses change halfway through the year. The only exceptions are Band, ENVO and French which are full year
courses.
The school day is divided into 7 blocks – TA followed by 6 major instructional blocks. We operate on a rotating
timetable (6 day cycle with 7 periods per day) that results in students having different subjects at different times
each day. Please see the Rotation Calendar on the school’s website for more details.
Students are dismissed every Friday at 12:00 pm so that staff can participate in staff meetings, professional
activities, School Development and Renewal Plan work, Professional Learning Communities, Department, SLT,
and Grade Level Team meetings. The students are asked to please respect the staff’s need to do this work by
leaving the building quickly once dismissed.
YEARBOOK
Every year a yearbook is published documenting the school year. In mid-October based on historical data and
presales we submit our order for a specific number of books. If a student is interested in purchasing a yearbook,
it is highly recommended that the student order and pay for one in the fall as we cannot guarantee there will be
enough extras for students who decide in the spring to purchase one.
