The purpose of Dr. E.P. Scarlett High School is to prepare through the
development of knowledge, skills, attitudes and responsibility,
graduates who are self confident, lifelong learners capable of
enhancing their lives and the quality of our world.
Principal’s message
With Spring Break right around the corner, it is hard to believe how quickly the school year is going. Students
need to buckle down knowing they are moving into one of the busiest times of the year. Of note:
• We celebrate the great achievement of our music program at the Alberta Band Festival with 5
Superiors, 2 Excellent, 4 Gold and 1 Most Outstanding; as well as an amazing Winds from the South
concert
• Mentorship Registration day on March 5 where graduating students shared their exit portfolios with
their parents and Mentorship Teachers, and the grade 10s & 11s made their plans for next year.
• We celebrate a fine season and anticipate the finals in basketball, badminton and swimming
• Looking forward to new seasons for Boys’ soccer, Girls’ field hockey and track & field
• Anticipation of Graduation with banquet ticket sales, ceremony ticket pick-up and rehearsals in the near
future.
The Mentorship Program at Scarlett is cementing itself as one of our cornerstones and as part of the
foundation of our high standards for our students. The principles behind the program are that students are
given the opportunity to answer the questions, “Who am I?” “What are my options?” & “What is my plan?” all
with the support of a relationship with a significant adult mentor. This program is ever evolving and based on
student surveys and staff input. We are preparing for more changes for next year. Of note:
• Each student will have the same mentorship teacher for 3 years
• Instead of a weekly class, we have chosen the top 10 activities from past years and will offer these
opportunities sporadically throughout the year through time-banking
• It will become a non-credit course, without the stress of assessment
• The preparation of the portfolio will occur in CALM and will be augmented in Gr. 12
• Successful completion and presentation of the exit portfolio will be required for participation in our
closing exercises.
Have a great Spring Break and come back full of steam for the end of the school year.
DRESS CODE
It’s that time of the year again when we would like to reinforce our dress code, which reads as follows:
“Students’ dress at school should be suitable for learning activities. Just as there is a mode of dress suited to
office work, To the playing field or gymnasium, to various social or formal functions, there is also a mode of
dress suited to classroom learning. Distracting clothing such as beach wear, halter tops,. Spaghetti strap tops,
open back or midriff outfits, muscle shirts, shorts and skirts above finger tip length, and t-shirts with
offensive language or images are not acceptable. Shoes must be worn at all times for health and safety reasons.

Our expectations for dress at Dr. E.P. Scarlett High School are intended to promote a positive learning
MENTORSHIP
Mentorship Day was a big success. Our grade 10 and 11 students met, together with their parents and
Mentorship teachers to program classes for next year. We appreciate the time and effort everyone puts in to
helping our students make the appropriate course selections for the up coming year. Parent attendance at
these meetings reinforces how important education is in the lives of our youth and help to forge greater bonds
between school and home. Together we can help students make the right course choices; choices that will
affect where they go in the future.

Grade 12 Mentorship students presented their portfolios to their parents and their Mentorship teacher on
March 5, 2008. This is an important requirement to participate in the grade 12 closing ceremonies. Mentorship
teachers also checked gown sizes, fee payment and other information necessary for graduation. If you missed
these meetings, please call your child’s Guidance Counsellor as soon as possible.
With the arrival of spring, many of our Mentorship classes are moving into their culminating activities. Grade 10
students will be creating two separate plans for their life 5 years after high school, Grade 11 students will be
finishing their service activities and Grade 12 students will be busy with graduation, budgeting and alumni chats.
All students will have a chance to participate in “Career Idol”, our career fair and our “Health Fair”. Destiny
Cummer, our career practitioner, has been hard at work organizing these school wide events and both promise
to be very exciting.
Mentorship class is moving to a new format next year with some new twists. Students will keep the Mentorship
teacher they have currently. There will not be a weekly class but students will meet for special events, report
cards and action planning. This means that no credit will be awarded to the Mentorship program. A one-on-one
interview will take place once per semester with their Mentorship teacher outside of class time. In order to
participate in graduation ceremonies, students must have successfully completed the following:
• A career portfolio
• 5 hours of service to the school or community over the course of 3 years
• An action plan for the time they have spent at Scarlett
• Successful completion of Alberta Education’s requirements for a high school diploma
Next year’s grade 12 students who have successfully completed the 2007/2008 Mentorship program will be
given credit for their service hours. We hope these changes will keep the spirit and intentions of the
Mentorship program, and provide even better programming for our students.
THE CINDERELLA PROJECT
Every year, a number of students are unable to attend their graduation banquet and dance because of the cost
of a gown and accessories. This program was created to allow students in financial need to be able to
experience their graduation banquet with style and dignity where they would be otherwise unable to do so.
“The Cinderella Project” collects previously loved gowns and, when necessary, has them cleaned and altered.
This project provides the opportunity for young women in the Calgary area to be treated to a Cinderella
experience of choosing a gown and accessories for their graduation ceremony.
The young women who participate will attend Cinderella Day. The Cinderella Event day, where the gown
selection occurs, will be on Saturday April 19 th 2008 at the CPR Pavilion in the Palliser Hotel. All “Cinderellas”
will receive an individual invitation and appointment time which has original art work from a Sir Winston
Churchill student artist. This invitation must be presented at the door for entrance. Students may bring a
female friend or female parent for help with their selection but there will be lots of help available at the event.
The Cinderella Day at the Delta Bow Valley Hotel last year provided over 110 grade 12 young ladies in the
Calgary area with a beautiful gown of their choice, along with a makeover and gift bag provided by Super Drug
Mart.

We are very excited to be involved in this project and are looking forward to helping all students attend their
graduation banquet.
Contact Information
If you are able to donate a previously loved gown or recommend someone for either project please contact
a counselor, Ms Dyer, Ms. Williams, Ms. Gallant or Ms. Adams. You can also just drop off the gowns at
the main office and we will deliver them to the Project.
BLOOD DONOR CLINIC
March 6 th was the 4 th annual Blood Donor Clinic at Dr. E.P. Scarlett High School. With great enthusiasm,
students quickly filled the available appointments, hoping to help out their fellow Calgarians. We were able to
collect 70 units of blood in 5 hours, with only a few students fainting. The nurses and staff were pleased with
the day and mentioned that our students were “a pleasure to work with”. Thanks to the students and volunteers
of Ms. Kowalewski’s grade 11 mentorship class – this year’s clinic was another success!
GOOD FOOD BOX
In January Dr. E. P. Scarlett began offering the Good Food Box service at the school. The Good Food Box is a
Community Kitchen Program where families/individuals can purchase fresh fruit and vegetables at a low cost.
The service buys fruit and vegetables from wholesalers and then provides the products at a lower cost because
it does not have the overhead that would come with a regular grocery store.
Families/individuals must pay for the boxes which come in 3 different sizes (small for $15, medium for $20 and
large for $25). There is no limit of the number of boxes an individual or family can buy each month and there
are no income limitations for this program. Payment for the boxes must be received, in cash, prior to the order
date and boxes would need to be picked up the day they are delivered to the school.
Jackie Guy (School Family Liaison) and Tanya Miller (Learning Strategies) are working together to provide this
service within the school. For further questions or to order a box please contact Jackie at 281-3366 x 2145.
Although you do not get a choice of what is in the box, which contains seasonal fruit and vegetables and varies
monthly, a good amount and selection of produce comes in each one.
Following is the Good Food Box schedule which includes the order due date (money is due before this day) and
Personal Cheques
The transition to “image friendly” cheques in Canada is underway. Please make sure you are updating your
cheques to the new format. Cheques must have the date field printed under the date to show the format that
has been used (e.g. YY MM DD; MM DD YY; DD MM YY). They must also have a verification phrase printed on
a specified location on the back of the cheque; the phrase will act as a reference point that financial
institutions can use to confirm that a good image of the back of the cheque has been captured.
As of July 1, 2008, we will not be able to accept personal or business cheques if they do not have the new
Multicultural radio station helping CBE
communicate with ESL families
The CBE has an incredibly diverse and culturally rich student population. Did you know there are over 110
languages spoken by families of CBE students? It is important to the CBE to communicate effectively with all
of our families, and we are continually striving to find innovative ways to do just that.
Communications Services and the Department of Community Engagement and Operational Planning are pleased to
have established a relationship with Fairchild Radio station in our attempt to broaden communications with
families who speak English as a second language. Fairchild Ratio provides multicultural programs in 19 languages
to more that 16 ethnic communities in Calgary and area.

The programming on Fairchild Radio is of particular value to Cantonese speaking families, as all weekday
programming is hosted in that language. Other culturally-specific programs are aired on the evenings and
weekends. Program information is available on the Fairchild Radio website at wwwfm947.com/en/index.php.
Because Fairchild is unable to broadcast a program in several languages simultaneously, Communications Services
and CEOP will liaise with Fairchild from time to time to communicate non-urgent messages, such as information
about public meetings or other events that address impacts to student designation or educational learning.
With this new initiative, the CBE hopes to continue strengthening its relationships and effective communication
with all parent communities.
If you have ideas about how to communicate more effectively with families who speak English as a second
language or with any parent community, we’d love to hear from you! Fill out our online feedback form at:
http://www.cbe.ab.ca/schools/ceop/feedback.asp
Be sure to leave the Student Accommodation Issue box blank when completing the form. Your insights and
observations will help us grow and expand our efforts at communicating effectively with you.
And remember to tune into 94.7FM to catch Calgary’s multicultural radio station live!
MODEL UN
Twenty-four E.P. Scarlett students woke up early and showed up at the University of Calgary at 9:00 am to
start a two-day Model United Nations simulation. Scarlett has been participating in this for several years now,
and has always put in a great effort. This year was no exception! We had students representing nations from
Burundi, Macedonia, Myanmar, Tunisia, Maldives, Ukraine, Belarus, Indonesia, Congo, Kazakhstan, and Zimbabwe.
Special kudos go to the Indonesian team members, especially Katelyn Maki and Rachel Beames, who made waves
(excuse the pun) on the Security Council and in several committees. The Ukraine team did some great work as
well. And we had several people who made an effort to dress in nation-appropriate costumes, especially Emily
Campbell, who was dressy in her Burundian outfit. Thanks very much to all participants, who made Scarlett look
good …..again! For those of you in Grade 10 or 11, I look forward to working with you again next year!
DEBATE
After six months of participation in various debate tournaments around the city, we finally arrived at the
regionals at Bishop O’Byrne Saturday, March 8 th . The topic was “Be it Resolved that Free Trade has been
beneficial to the developing world, which is definitely not an easy one. The Scarlett contingent put in a huge
effort. Katherine Rabik and Julie Reimer have had a great year as new debaters.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
Scarlett’s Amnesty International Multi Issues Club has been challenged by Mr. Lederer’s AP classes to raise
much needed food for the Interfaith Food Bank. The “Beat the Geeks” food drive will be held from March 10 th
until the 14 th . We ask that students bring in money rather than cans as this is less cumbersome to handle, and
staff at the food bank know what food items to purchase.
Background
Each year Alberta Education provides school boards
with information on their students’ results. In earlier
newsletters, I reported on the provincial achievement and
diploma testing results and on the results of the provincial
satisfaction surveys of students, parents and teachers.
In this newsletter, I am reporting on our results for
Rutherford Scholarship Eligibility, High School to Post-
Secondary Transition, Dropout and Return, and High School
Completion.
Rutherford Scholarship Eligibility Rate
Grade 12 students are eligible for provincially
awarded Rutherford Scholarships if they achieve excellence
in specified courses in Grade 10, 11 or 12. A student can be
eligible to receive as much as $400 for Grade 10 academic
excellence, $800 for Grade 11 and $1,300 for Grade 12. In
2007, 39% of our graduates were eligible for these
scholarships. Students receive the scholarships when they
have confirmed enrolment in a post-secondary institution.
Post-Secondary Transition Rates
The High School to Post-Secondary Transition
Rate is a calculation of the rate at which students move
into post-secondary education within four and six years
of starting Grade 10. Our students’ Transition Rate after
four years of entering Grade 10 was 40%, and after six
years of entering Grade 10, it was 59%.
More Measures of Success
High School Completion Rates
High school completion rates track a specific
group of first-time Grade 10 students for three, four and
five years. Within three years of entering Grade 10, 70%
of our students completed high school; after four years
76% completed; and after five years 77%. Our completion
rates have climbed over the past several years; however,
we want to see further growth. Increasing completion
rates is a strong focus for action.
All levels of the school system work towards
increasing high school completion rates. Every school does
annual improvement planning, which includes strategies
that have a direct or indirect impact on students
completing school. Strategies range from increasing
academic success, to strategies that help students
recover from setbacks, to others that enable students to
explore career and postsecondary options. School plans
are rolled up into the five administrative Areas’ plans,
which are then consolidated into the system plan that
drives budget decisions.
In addition to this strategic planning, other
actions are being taken based on the recommendations
from our Review of Secondary Education. The review
included representatives of our many stakeholders, to
reflect the powerful impact families, community,
partners, service agencies, potential employers and the
economy have on students completing high school.
Dropout and Return Rates
Dropout Rates are based on the number of 14 to 18
year old students who are enrolled in our schools on
September 30 in a given school year. At the end of the next
year, students from this group who did not complete high
school and were not in one of our schools or a school
elsewhere in the province are considered to have dropped
out. Our Dropout Rate has improved steadily, to an all-time
low of 4.9%.
The Return Rate is calculated by tracking the
students who were identified as having dropped out and who
then returned to school the next year. Our most recent
Return Rate is 20%.
Significant Growth
Our rates of Rutherford Scholarship Eligibility,
High School to Post-Secondary Transition, Dropout and
Return, and High School Completion have shown steady
and statistically significant growth. This is a foundation
of success upon which we will continue to build in order to
serve our students even better.
Academic Success at the Calgary Board of Education
“We accept all students who come to us for a public education: The gifted. The talented. The comfortable. The motivated. The
well-nourished. Children from every nation on Earth. Those whose English is poetic and whose self-discipline is extraordinary. We
also welcome those who do not speak English at all. The unloved, the poor, the hungry. The refugees from war, repression and
torture. And those with physical, emotional and learning disabilities”.
– Dr. Brendan Croskery, CBE Chief Superintendent of Schools
For each student in the Calgary Board of Education academic success means something personal. For some, it’s finishing high school and
moving on to post-secondary education. For others, it’s completion of an apprenticeship or non-certificated program, or continued adult
education.
CBE’s most vulnerable
For many of our most vulnerable students, academic success means the acquisition of basic life skills that prepare them to function – living
and working in the community -- with dignity and integrity. Some of our special needs students achieve a lot more than this, becoming
leaders in the community.
With more than 100,000 students, each of whose educational needs are personal, our continued success in preparing them for 21 st century
life has required new thinking.
In recent years, we’ve tried to tie together Canadian citizenship, personal development, character and academic studies. We’ve done so as a
group, working together as representatives of all Calgarians.
In 2007, this governance model that links values to academics won national recognition from the Conference Board of Canada.
It’s easy to find out how our students are doing on tests...and in terms of Canadian citizenship, personal development and character
strength. Go to www.cbe.ab.ca and take a look at our Ends monitoring reports. They’re published on an annual basis, and they provide
statistical and anecdotal evidence of student progress, academic and otherwise.
In terms of academic success specifically, the latest Academic Success monitoring report (December, 2007) is available at
www.cbe.ab.ca/Trustees/pdfs/ends2monitoring.pdfAll Ends monitoring reports can be found at:
2006 Accountability Pillar Results Report
This conveyed an exceptionally positive story, demonstrating continued CBE improvement. It included information about our decreasing
drop-out rate, our increase in high school completion, and in the number of students who qualify for the Rutherford Scholarship. It is
posted online at: www.cbe.ab.ca/aboutus/documents/account_pillar_summary_06.pdf.
Annual Education Results Report 2006-2007
On the majority of Provincial Achievement Test measures, CBE students performed at higher levels than students from across the province.
Jim Dueck, an Assistant Deputy Minister with Alberta Education, wrote to CBE recently to commend us on our sixth consecutive
improvement on Provincial Achievement Tests. He further complimented us when he asked us to discuss what strategies we use to
accomplish such extraordinary results. You can see the latest results at: www.cbe.ab.ca/aboutus/aerr.asp.
