BELIEFS WHICH GUIDE OUR
PRACTICE AT JANET JOHNSTONE
SCHOOL
Our mission: Our school community strives
for excellence in learning within an inclusive
environment.
Our motto: “Better Together”
Together, we are creating a collaborative
school culture in which:
The pursuit of excellence
encourages all to be leaders, problem
solvers, critical thinkers, and life-long
learners.
The voices of all stakeholders are
heard and valued as we work toward our
common purpose.
The school is a fertile environment
for mind, body and senses. We plan for
meaningful learning experiences and
connections that deepen the learner’s
understanding. School-wide teaming,
valued support of strategists, and
active parent involvement enhance our
ability to use flexible groups, provide
enrichment, and effectively use staff and
parent expertise to meet all of our children’s
learning needs.
Staff members learn together
through reflective practice in Professional
Learning Communities (PLC’s).
Children and adults are nurtured
and stimulated in a culture of positive
energy and respect for each other. Everyone
can take risks in their learning because
they feel safe and cared for.
With input from parents, teachers
and students, we have been able to
establish foundational statements to carry
our work forward. They have guided the
decision-making aspects of the school.
LEADERSHIP MESSAGE
Welcome and Bienvenue to another fulfilling
year of learning and working together. In
the 2013-2014 school year, we are pleased
to have our French Immersion Program
expand to Grade 6.
The purpose of the handbook is to provide
parents and students with important
information that guides our daily work at
Janet Johnstone School. Parents are
encouraged to take the time to review the
information with their children and to use it
as a handy resource. Our staff looks
forward to working with you and thank you
for your continued interest, support and
involvement.
The two school development goals for the
2013-2014 school year will continue to
guide our work with students.
Outcome 1) Students will achieve and excel
at grade level expectations in English
Language Arts and in French Language
Arts for our French Immersion students in
both reading and writing.
Outcome 2) Students will model the
characteristics of active citizenship and
character.
PROGRAMS OFFERED
FRENCH IMMERSION
A French Immersion program is offered to
students in Kindergarten to Grade 6 for the
communities of Shawnessy, Millrise,
Shawnee Slopes, Somerset, Bridlewood,
Evergreen and Silverado. The program is
expanding to grade 6 in 2013-14.
F.S.L. (French as a Second
Language)
At Janet Johnstone, French as a Second
Language is taught to students in Grade 4 in
the English program as part of the Program
of Studies.
♪ MUSIC PROGRAM ♫
Music is an integral part of Janet Johnstone’s
students’ weekly program. Having a music
specialist provides program continuity.
Children are given opportunities to learn
through many approaches, but particular
emphasis is given to the Orff- Schulwerk
method which allows students to become
independent musicians as they move
through the grades. The music room is well
equipped with many instruments making it
possible for children to be active
players/performers in music activities.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
We have daily physical education. Our
school uses the SPARK Program to provide
a quality physical education program utilizing
a spacious gymnasium, adventure
playground, well-equipped compound and
well maintained playing fields. Students from
grades 1-6 are scheduled for a daily 1/2 hour
class.
LEARNING COMMONS
Our school library, now called the Learning
Commons, fosters lifelong learning and is
an integral part of our education program.
Children are encouraged to browse and
select materials at their level, care for them
properly, and return or renew them on time.
We do not charge for overdue materials.
However, students are held accountable for
lost or damaged books.
Students may choose from a wide variety of
learning resources for assignments and for
personal interest which are available in both
French and English and include: reference,
fiction and non-fiction print materials, audiovisual
materials, magazines, on-line
databases, internet resources, and various
educational software. Our library assistant
manages these resources as well as
provides assistance to students and
teachers in accessing and choosing reading
and learning materials. As well as providing
borrowing privileges and teaching library
orientation and location skills, the library
assistant supports all other curriculum
programs in research, planning and
implementation. We also have a small
parent reference library.
4
The Calgary Board of Education (CBE)
employs the use of a web-based program
called WebCat for searching the CBE
library catalogue. WebCat allows students
and staff online access to our school library
and the entire CBE library from home or at
school on any computer with Internet
capability. Checking the WebCat from home
under the “My Stuff” tab allows students to
view a list of materials they have scanned
out from our school library and their due
dates.
Dedicated volunteers and student library
helpers keep our library a dynamic and
organized learning area.
Come and enjoy our Learning Commons
and its abundant resources!
TECHNOLOGY
What is the role of Technology in the
School?
1. Janet Johnstone has a Web Awareness
Plan which requires teachers to actively
supervise students when they are on-line as
well as defines expectations and
responsibilities of students. CBE teachers
receive regular web awareness training.
2. Within the framework of the Information
and Communication Technologies Program
of Study, students of all age levels are
taught to be aware of moral and ethical
issues around internet use.
3. CBE’s Acceptable Use of Internet Policy
AR1062 states that CBE uses filtering
technology to block access to inappropriate
websites. However, filtering software does
not replace an adult as the supervisor of
internet use.
How can parents keep children safe
online?
1. Supervise! Supervise! Supervise!
- children under 12 should not be surfing the
internet alone.
- keep internet-connected computers out of
children’s rooms and in a highly visible area.
- use “History” to check websites your
children have visited.
2. Learn about the online environments your
children are using.
- ask your children to teach you everything
they know (and they know a lot!).
3. Create guidelines your children can follow.
- family contract - the following website is a
good example:
SCHOOL EXPECTATION POLICY
FOR STUDENTS
The purpose of our expectation policy is to
develop a common understanding among
school staff, parents and students. The
intent of any action taken is to help students
learn from their mistakes. An atmosphere of
cooperation, collaboration and understanding
between all parties is the most productive
way of making this learning effective.
A consistent approach to behaviour by
school staff, students, and parents has
resulted in students knowing, and following,
expectations at Janet Johnstone School.
EVERYONE DOES THEIR PART
The teacher establishes clear
expectations, models appropriate behavior
and attitudes, reinforces correct behavior,
and is alert to the student who needs
assistance.
The student is aware, understands and
follows expectations to help maintain a safe
and appropriate learning environment.
Students model appropriate behavior for
others in the school.
The parent supports, cooperates,
provides input and models behavior and
attitudes conducive to their child’s learning.
SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS/RULES

treat others with kindness and respect
keep hands, feet and objects to
yourself
use courteous language
walk in the halls
5
follow directions when asked
With adult guidance, children take
responsibility for their learning and assume
responsibility for their actions. Our goal is
that each child grows in self-monitoring
his/her own behaviours.
To accomplish this goal we have adopted
the Raise Responsibility System described
as follows:
The Raise Responsibility System
The foundation of The Raise Responsibility
System* developed by Marvin Marshall is to
teach students how to become responsible
before problems occur. How young people
mature after learning the hierarchy is what
makes teaching it so valuable.
Rather than focusing on discipline, think of
the hierarchy as an opportunity for young
people to have a rubric for making
decisions in life. This system can be used
with students from kindergarten to grade
12.
The practice in the implementation of the
system is based on three principles;
1) Positivity: turning negative requests into
positive statement such as saying, “This is
a walking zone” instead of saying “don’t
run.”
2) Choice: students have the choice of
controlling their behaviour by determining at
which level they are behaving and making a
choice to move to the higher level
3) Reflection: asking reflective questions is
the best way for young people to learn to
manage their own behaviour. All staff at the
school received training to understand the
levels used to address behaviour
throughout the school: in class, at lunch and
at recess on the playground.
We use the following four levels of social
development to help us teach our students
how to succeed at school and in life.
The top two levels are both acceptable
and the ones that students strive for.
D: Democracy is the highest level on the
hierarchy and our goal for all students. This
level is characterized by self-discipline,
initiative, and displaying responsibility. At this
level, a person's motivation is internal.
C: Cooperation is when a person is
considerate and complies with requests,
either from peers or adults. At this level the
motivation is external.
___________________________________
These following two levels are NOT
acceptable.
B: Bothering or Bossing which is
characterized by bothering or bossing others
and breaking our standards at school.
A: Anarchy is the absence of order and is
characterized by chaos.
We believe that by teaching these levels, we
are encouraging students to learn how to
make responsible choices as well as
supporting the goals of our school and
community to develop active responsible
citizenship and character in our students.
However, since this is a system for teaching
responsibility, when a student is unable to
move his behaviour to the acceptable levels
and if expectations are not met, the
classroom teacher, educational assistant or
lunchroom supervisor will initially deal with
the situation. If they deem it necessary, they
will involve an administrator. Emphasis is on
the insights which a staff member gains from
speaking with the student and solving the
problem together.
Consequences for poor choices may include
the loss of privileges within the classroom or
school, written assignments or apologies, a
“cooling off” time outside the classroom,
finding solutions on how to “make it right” or
a phone call home.
At times, when an incident is more serious or
there have been repeat incidents, a Student
Incident form is completed and sent home
requiring a parent’s signature. Whenever
possible, parents are informed by phone.
The form includes:
1. What happened?
2. What the child could do differently in
the future.
3. What consequences, if any, have been
assigned.
4. Administrator’s comment
5. Space for parent comment and
signature.
When an administrator is involved they will
determine the consequence depending on
the seriousness of student behaviour. It
6
may result in an in-school or out-of-school
suspension.
In any circumstance where behaviour is an
issue, the focus is on the student
understanding their responsibility in the
situation and accepting consequences for
their actions.
SCHOOL ROUTINES
ATTENDANCE
Regular attendance and a habit of being on
time are important to a child’s progress. The
School Act states that under Compulsory
Education Section 13(5) a student is
excused from attending school on a day on
which the school is open if:
a) the student is unable to attend by
reason of sickness or other unavoidable
cause
b) the day is recognized as a religious
holiday by the religious denomination to
which the student belongs
c) the principal of the school has
suspended the student from school and the
suspension is still in effect.
An absence for any other reason or without
a reason, is entered as an unexcused
absence in the student’s attendance record.
ARRIVAL TIMES AT SCHOOL
All students should arrive for school
between 8:00 am and 8:15 am for morning
classes and between 12:15 pm and 12:30
pm for afternoon classes and line up at
designated entry doors when the bell rings.
Teachers are on supervision during those
times.
ENTRY AND EXIT PROCEDURES

Enter and leave the building by your
designated doors.
Decide on a common outside meeting
spot for family and friends.
Carry boots and outdoor shoes to and
from your classroom.
Please remove hats when you enter
the building.
MEETING AREAS
After school, children meet their “walking
group” at a place outside the school and
are encouraged to go home first before
making play arrangements.
RECESS
Recess takes place in the morning.
Monday-Friday: 10:05 am – 10:19 am.
HOMEWORK
Parents are encouraged to
discuss their child’s daily school
activities and to review together
the agenda for any activities,
projects, books or assignments which are
brought home. Parents’ interest in
schoolwork is an important factor in a child’s
success. Homework is a positive extension
of school activities. Assignments might
include home reading, research projects,
math and completion of work. If students
encounter difficulties, we invite you to
communicate with the teacher so that the
problem can be resolved quickly. Please
look on D2L (Desire 2 Learn) on our website
for specific class information. Access
information is provided on page 12.
Students who are ill and likely to miss a
week or more will be given home
assignments according to their level of
energy during convalescence. Please
contact your child’s teacher to make specific
arrangements.
When students go on holidays with family
during school days, teachers are not
expected to provide the work covered during
that absence prior to the student leaving.
When the student returns, the teacher will
provide the work missed, as much as is
feasible. We suggest that those students
keep a journal or scrapbook to share with
their teacher upon their return. Travel
Journals are available in the office for this
purpose.
OUTDOOR/INDOOR SHOES
Students are asked to keep a pair of indoor
shoes (suitable for phys. ed. classes) at
school. To enable us to keep our hallways
safe and clean, everyone, including parents
and staff, are asked to remove their outdoor
footwear at the entrance doors to the
school, and carry them to the classrooms.
7
APPROPRIATE DRESS
Standards of dress and grooming are
established by the school. They are:
BOYS
- slacks, trousers, and jeans worn properly
- shirts, sweaters or jackets suitable for
indoor wear
- suitable footwear
GIRLS
- slacks, jeans, dresses or skirts
- blouses, sweaters or jackets suitable for
indoor use
- suitable footwear
- spaghetti straps/strapless and short shorts
are not deemed appropriate dress
STUDENT PHONE USE
Students have access to a
telephone in the office for all emergencies.
We value student learning time and wish to
avoid interrupting student learning during
school time.
We encourage students to leave their cell
phones at home. If it is necessary for a
student to have a cell phone at school, it is
expected that the phone will be turned off
and remain in the student’s backpack. If
parents need to reach a child, they should
contact the office who will give the message
to the child or ask the child to come to the
office to speak to the parent.
LOST AND FOUND
Articles of clothing or other items found
around the school or playground are
deposited in the lost and found boxes and
tables by the gymnasium entrance.
Valuables and money are to be turned into
the office. As many students do not claim
their belongings, parents are asked to
check the boxes periodically to retrieve their
children’s possessions. We request that
all of your child’s belongings brought to
school be clearly labeled (including
footwear). Items will be displayed on
conference evenings - please make a point
of checking. Unclaimed items are sent to a
charity.
We also request that parents discourage
their children from bringing items of
considerable monetary or personal value to
school.
CBE cannot be held responsible for
lost, stolen or damaged property.
SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
ASSEMBLIES
Our assemblies are a way of sharing our
classroom activities, and giving recognition
to the students for their hard work. Work
presented is at a ‘sharing’ level of practice,
rather than a ‘performance’ level (which
involves props, costumes, etc.). You are
invited to take part in our school life by
attending any of these assemblies. Your
presence supports the children’s efforts. We
welcome other relatives and friends as
guests to our assemblies as well.
An important element of our assemblies is
to have children learn appropriate audience
manners. We strive to have the children be
quiet, attentive and appreciative listeners.
We ask that children and adults refrain from
chatting during performances.
We give advance notice of assemblies in the
newsletter. Please check with your child.
We vary the days and times of assemblies to
accommodate both Kindergarten morning
and afternoon classes and to provide a
wider opportunity for guests to attend and to
avoid interrupting the same curriculum area.
At the end of this handbook we have
included the words to the Salute to the Flag,
O Canada (English and French) and our
school song so you can join us in our
singing.
CLUBS
Student Leadership – The development of
leadership skills in our students is one of our
current school goals. We provide
8
opportunities for students to be leaders in all
areas of school life. Areas for service offered
to students include being helpers in the
office, in the music room, in the gym looking
after equipment, in the library and looking
after computers.
COMPLEMENTARY ACTIVITIES
The school offers a complementary
component to the Music program where
children are encouraged to utilize skills
acquired in class by participating in Choir,
Handbell, and other performance groups that
vary from year to year.
A variety of activities are offered each year.
A schedule and description of these
activities will be provided to students and
parents before the beginning of the session.
Three sessions of activities are scheduled
per year in fall, winter and spring which
provide opportunities for students in grades
1 to 6 to choose one activity per year. Due
to the large number of bussed students,
those activities take place at lunchtime.
Students participating in complementary
activities and who are not registered in the
lunchroom program are not allowed to eat
their lunch in the lunchroom. Students who
normally go home for lunch will bring their
lunch and eat under the supervision of the
teacher(s) offering the activity.
RESOURCE SERVICES
SERVICES FOR SPECIAL NEEDS
A number of our students require services
beyond classroom resources. C.B.E.
provides valuable consultative, assessment
and instructional support services for
students, teachers, school administrators
and parents.
SCHOOL LEARNING TEAM (SLT)
The School Support Team is comprised of
system level and school based personnel.
School based personnel include classroom
teachers, ed. assistants, resource teachers,
administrative team as well as parents who
meet when a child is referred in order to:
1) determine objectives of the referral
2) contribute to assessment
3) discuss findings
4) determine actions
5) brainstorm strategies
6) monitor implementation of the
Individual Program Plan (IPP)
C.B.E. AND COMMUNITY SUPPORT
System level assistance can include the
provision of consultative services from Area
supports, Psychologists, Strategists, and a
Community Support Worker who is based in
our school. In addition, we have access to
Hearing and Vision Itinerant teachers.
Calgary Health Services supports the
school with Nursing Services and with
services from the Speech Pathologist,
Occupational and Physical Therapists.
REFERRAL PROCEDURES
Referrals for these services are completed
by the classroom teacher through the SLT
process after consultation with the parent.
Parents will be contacted and asked to
provide written consent prior to the
involvement of the School Psychologist,
Speech Pathologist, Occupational Therapist
or Physical Therapist. Parents will be given
the opportunity of meeting with the SLT to
contribute to the implementation of
programming recommendations.
STUDENT SAFETY IN AND AROUND
SCHOOL
ALLERGY ALERT- No nuts please
We ask that parents be vigilant in making
sure that nuts, tree nuts or nut products are
not sent to school in snacks or lunches, as
many students are very allergic to nuts or
tree nuts. This creates a life-threatening
situation for some of our students and
requires responsible action by all of us.
PARKING LOT
For safety reasons, we ask that parents DO
NOT drop off and pick up students in our
school parking lot. Additionally, we ask that
PARENTS DO NOT walk students through
the parking lot when walking them to school.
Please obey the sign that is placed at the
entrance to the staff parking lot.
The C.B.E. has posted a sign at the
parking lot entrance which reads:
“Loading and unloading of children in the
parking lot is prohibited.”
9
TRAFFIC CONCERNS - Please walk a
block.
The traffic congestion that occurs before and
after school can be both dangerous and
frustrating. A number of years ago, the
Student Council proposed that drivers,
except for buses, park and let students out at
least one block from the edge of the school
grounds. Please consider that possibility
when dropping off your child at school. The
result will be healthier kids and a safer
environment for all.
Young children learn more from the actions
of the adults who matter in their lives and
observing how they follow or not follow
safety rules than any lessons taught in
school regarding safety measures.
BICYCLES, SKATEBOARDS,
SCOOTERS, ROLLERBLADES,
HOCKEY AND LACROSSE STICKS
Students are welcome to ride their bikes to
school. We ask that they:
Wear a safety helmet

Lock their bike on the bike rack
Walk bikes on school grounds
and on sidewalks.
For safety reasons, scooters, skateboards,
roller blades, hockey and lacrosse sticks
are not allowed at school.
PLAYGROUND BOUNDARIES
Out of bound areas include: the parking
lot, bike racks, electrical boxes, fencing, the
large dumpsters, and down the hill beyond
the soccer field and by the utility building.
Designated play areas are at the back of
school, extending to the south end of the
soccer field and to Shannon Close on the
west. No child is allowed to leave the
playground at recess, or the school during
class time without teacher and parent
permission. For safety reasons children will
need to remain on school property during
the school day including recess time.
STUDENTS, REMEMBER THAT FOR
YOUR SAFETY, WE MUST BE ABLE TO
SEE YOU AT ALL TIMES!
CREATIVE PLAYGROUND SAFETY
Creative Playground Safety Measure:
The school is committed to providing
students and staff with a safe and secure
environment through the support and efforts
of all staff, students and members of our
community.
The Creative Playground should only be
used during the school day by students
attending the school. For safety reasons,
younger siblings, who are not attending
school, should not be on the playground
while students are using it. The reason for
this measure is to avoid potential accidents
or injury to the young child and/or to one of
the students using the playground
equipment. The staff is responsible for
children using the structure. Even if a parent
is supervising, if an accident were to occur,
the responsibility still rests with the school for
allowing younger children on the playground
with the knowledge of the potential risk
involved.
Consequently, we ask that parents refrain
from allowing their younger child/children
from playing on the Creative playground
while students are using it, especially at
recess time between 10:05 and 10:20 am
and at lunchtime between 11:35 am and
12:30 pm. At other times in the day, unless
students are outside using the playground
under the supervision of a teacher, parents
can make the choice of using the playground
at their own risks. Teachers and lunchroom
supervisors have been asked that if they
notice a younger child, who is not a student
at the school, playing on the Creative
Playground to remind parents of our safety
practices for the use of the structure.
We appreciate your cooperation in helping
us provide a safe playing environment for
our students
COMMUNITY SAFETY
The staff at Janet Johnstone School is very
interested in being full partners in your
children’s safety while they are on their own
in the community, traveling to and from
school. To this end we cooperate with
parents and police.
10
We appreciate being notified by parents or
police of any incident which has alarmed a
child so that we can better deal with that
child. We do not make whole school P.A.
announcements because children vary in
how they respond to an alarm, and we
cannot be sensitive to individual needs
using group announcements. However, we
will notify parents when a situation requires
it and upon advice from the Area Director.
SCHOOL SAFETY PROCEDURES
ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES
Janet Johnstone School has a “safety
phone-in attendance policy”. Parents are
requested to phone the school prior to
8:15 am or 12:30 pm, at 777-8670 ext.1, if
your child is going to be absent or late.
Please notify the office, not the teacher,
of your child’s absence. If the school has
not received a telephone call from you
indicating that your child is absent, the
school will send an automated message
requesting that you contact the school. If
you have not returned the call within 10
minutes, the office will phone parents using
all available phone numbers. We depend
on you to phone us. The greater the
number of calls that we receive before the
start of school confirming absences, the
shorter the response time will be if we do
have an emergency and need to locate a
child.
STUDENT PICK UP (sign out)
Parents are asked to come to the office
when picking up their children during school
hours. Parents are asked to wait in the
office and their child will be called down to
meet you in the office. If a parent is
dropping off an item for his/her child, the
student will be called to the office to retrieve
the item. Please ensure you have signed
out your child in the book at the office. It is
important to account for all children at all
times. In case of an evacuation, or if a child
normally attends our lunchroom program
and leaves the school before lunch, we
need to know that this child is no longer at
school. Please notify your child’s teacher
by writing the early pick up time in the
agenda.
STUDENT ILLNESS/MEDICATION
If students become ill at school they can
rest in the nurse’s room for a brief time until
it is determined that they can return to
class. If the illness is of a more serious
nature, parents will be notified to pick up
their child. Parents will always be
contacted if the illness or injury is deemed
serious. The school should be made aware
of any medical problems so that we are
best able to assist a student in the event of
an emergency. Please keep us up to date
with your emergency phone contact
numbers and any new medical
conditions that arise after the start of the
year.
ADMINISTERING MEDICATION TO
STUDENTS
Please be aware that school personnel are
not authorized to dispense non-prescription
medication to students. Any request to
administer prescription medication at
school, must be accompanied by a medical
release form, available from the office,
signed by both a parent and the physician
who prescribed or approved this
medication.
All student medication must be picked up
from the school on the last day that
students attend in June.
HAZARDOUS WEATHER CONDITIONS
Students are expected to dress for cold
weather on a daily basis. We make a
decision regarding indoor recess and lunch
prior to these times as weather often
changes during the day. Decisions to keep
children inside are based on the reported
wind chill factor from Environment Canada.
BLUE DAY signs are hung on the outside
doors to indicate that children are able to
enter the school as soon as they arrive to
keep out of the very cold or very wet
conditions. On Blue Days, students will stay
inside for lunch and recess as long as the
conditions remain severe.
Students who go home for lunch should not
return to the school prior to 12:15 pm. From
11:35 am to 12:15 pm lunchroom
supervisors are responsible only for students
11
egistered in the lunch program and cannot
supervise non-registered students.
From 12:15 pm to 12:30 pm, teachers
assume the responsibility of supervising
students including students who are
returning from having lunch at home. Please
do not send children to arrive at school
earlier than 12:15 pm.
SECURITY PROCEDURES
SECURITY- HOW DO WE DO IT
HERE? We keep our school a safe
place!
We ask all visitors to enter by the front
door, check IN and OUT of the office, and
wear a name tag issued by the office.
We ask that parents or visitors sign in at the
office and obtain a name tag before
proceeding to classrooms to meet with a
teacher or for any other purpose that would
require them to have access to classrooms.
For parents, who come to volunteer and
have obtained their police clearance, they
can pick up their name tag and sign in on the
volunteer board in the main office.
SECURITY OF DOORS
All doors are locked when school is in
session except for the front door. You will
need to ring the bell if you require access to
the building if the front door is locked. At
dismissal times parents are asked to wait for
their children either at their meeting spots or
in the front foyer during inclement weather,
at dismissal times.
For safety and security reasons, the doors in
the main foyer leading into classroom areas
will be locked at all times while students are
in the school.
FIRE ALARM/LOCKDOWN/EVACUATION
All CBE schools are required to practice a
minimum of 6 fire drills, one lockdown and
one evacuation procedure practice every
year. A fire drill is the procedure students
would follow to evacuate the building in
case of an emergency. During fire drills we
teach students to remain silent at all
times, move to the correct exit, then go to
their assigned areas outdoors. A lockdown
is the routine exercised when a potentially
dangerous situation arises in or around a
school. An evacuation would be required if
students were unable to re-enter the
building due to unsafe conditions created by
the emergency situation. Teachers will
discuss these drills with students to help
them understand the need for these types
of procedures to take place in a calm, quiet
and orderly fashion.
SCHOOL CLOSING/EVACUATION
Parents will be advised of any school
closures due to inclement weather, by
reports issued by the CBE to the radio or
TV stations. In the event of an evacuation
due to an emergency situation at the
school, arrangements have been made with
our neighboring school, Samuel W. Shaw,
to accommodate our students until alternate
arrangements can be made. Children will
be supervised until parents arrive.
HOME-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION
STUDENT AGENDAS
How they are used:
The use of student agendas has the full
support of our School Council. They are
designed to promote daily contact between
school and home, maximize a clear twoway
communication, help students organize
homework and assignments, promote our
daily reading program in the primary grades
and build responsibility in each student.
Please read the agenda daily and initial the
date page, write any notes, questions, or
concerns on that page and ensure that your
child takes it to school the next day for
his/her teacher to read.
As this is a critical part of our
communication, students will be asked to
purchase a new agenda for $5 should it be
lost.
Information available on D2L
12
Besides the use of the agenda, many
teachers use D2L (Desire to Learn) to post
links and information as a resource to
support the learning of their students.
How to access D2L:
PROCESS FOR ADDRESSING
PARENT CONCERNS
Recognizing that, from time to time,
concerns or complaints may arise regarding
behaviours, actions or attitudes of staff or
volunteers, our goal is to resolve these
concerns in a cooperative, timely and fair
manner. In compliance with CBE AR5007
13
the process to address any concern that
parents may have is as follows:
1) The first step is to make the concern
known to the person involved by making an
appointment with the staff member or
volunteer to discuss the issue. This
discussion should not occur in the presence
of students, nor during class time and should
not be made in the presence of an
employee’s co-workers or other volunteers.
2) Secondly, if there is no resolution or
continuation of the concern, an appointment
should be made to discuss the matter with
the principal.
3) At times, concerns expressed can be
beyond the scope of the school and will need
to be referred to the Area Director.
4) A Concerns and Complaint Form is
available in the office if a parent or another
individual wishes to use this format to
register their concern but is not a
requirement to address an issue.
PARENT INVOLVEMENT
OPPORTUNITIES
JANET JOHNSTONE SCHOOL COUNCIL
Welcome to the School Council. As a parent
of a child attending Janet Johnstone School,
you are automatically a member of School
Council (JJSC). The Council consists of
parents, teachers and community members
who are eager to help guide and provide
meaningful feedback on our children’s
educational experiences, both in the school
and on the school grounds. At our meetings,
we give feedback on what has been
happening at the school and suggestions for
how to make our children’s school
experience the best it can be.
We also work alongside the Friends of
Janet Johnstone School Association
(FJJSA) , which is the incorporated nonprofit
society responsible for fundraising.
One of our responsibilities is to advise the
school on how to allocate these fundraising
dollars. Our goal is to enhance our
children’s learning experiences and
opportunities they would otherwise not be
able to receive. We work together with the
school administration to discuss purchases
to be sure we are spending the fundraising
dollars wisely.
Janet Johnstone School Council (JJSC)
would like to remind all parents about the
safety issues on the school grounds and in
the parking areas adjacent to the school.
We understand that parking is limited at the
school. We ask you to please be patient
and respectful of others. Remember there
is no stopping or parking in the bus zones,
the handicapped zone, or on any of the
residential street corners or in front of
private driveways. The number one priority
is to help keep our children safe in the
traffic turmoil.
The upcoming year is going to be full of
new experiences and adventures. We can’t
tell you enough how wonderful it is to
witness first hand, the dedication that the
staff and teachers have to our children. We
know that it will continue throughout the
year.
Please join us for our first meeting of the
2013-14 school year on Tuesday,
September 10 th at 6:30 pm in the Learning
Commons (library).
PARENT VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
Our Parent Volunteer Program includes all
those who volunteer for special programs or
field trips, as well as those who come in on
a regular basis to assist teachers in the
preparation of materials and in helping in a
capacity requested by the teacher. In order
to ensure that volunteers are always
contributing to the effectiveness of the
learning of all children the following
volunteer creed was developed by a
volunteer committee.
Volunteer Creed
To help enhance the educational
programs in consultation with teachers
and administration.
To keep confidential that which we see.
To help build children’s self-esteem.
To observe school security and fire
routines.
To sign in at the office and acquire a
name tag.
14
To provide encouragement to all
students and teachers.
To have fun and enjoy your
valuable contribution.
SALUTE TO THE FLAG
(With right hand held in salute over right
eyebrow)
Requirements for volunteers
Volunteers are asked to sign in and pick up
their name tags from the display on the wall
opposite the nurse’s room and to return it to
the display area prior to leaving the school.
It is a requirement of the CBE that all
volunteers fill out a Police Check Form to
Search and Disclosure Waiver and Release
prior to volunteering in the school. This
request is processed by our Admin.
Assistant. You will be notified by our
Volunteer Coordinator once she receives the
information that you are approved to work
with students. Your police check is valid for 5
years.
If you have obtained clearance at another
CBE school, please let the office know. Only
clearance obtained through the CBE process
will be accepted as meeting the requirement.
JANET JOHNSTONE SCHOOL SONG
Our school is not windows, concrete and
steel.
It’s the people who are in it and the way
that they feel.
It’s children and teachers and parents
who,
Each makes a difference the whole year
through.
By caring and sharing all those feelings
that together make our school one that
is simply “Great”!
We help each other learn and grow.
We give our best each day, and so,
We’re proud of our school and its Red
and Blue
JANET JOHNSTONE, We Love You
