BLAST PROGRAM
On February 7, we held the BLAST PROGRAM for all
Junior High Students. BLAST stands for
Building Leadership for Action in Schools Today!
“We learned about cigarettes and what they are made out of. One of the women that came to our school, Heather,
taught us about what a cigarette is made of and what gets into your body after you smoke. She also taught us the
difference between a light cigarette and a normal cigarette—and that they are both just as bad for us. She told us
some of the different toxins in a cigarette. There is actually over 7000 toxins that make up a cigarette! Heather
even brought two lungs in to the school so we could see the difference between a smokers lung and a non-smokers
lung. We were even allowed to touch them if we wanted to! Heather told us that smokers will spend about $300
per month and about $13000 in a year on cigarettes.
Dawn taught us about how tobacco was used by the Indigenous peoples. She showed us water pipes, chewing tobacco
and how the Indigenous peoples used the tobacco for it’s healing properties. Dawn taught us about how the
European settlers took advantage of the tobacco and got addicted to it.
Jenn taught us about how the tobacco industries sell their product and target people through advertising.
At the end of this presentation, we took a test and we were able to win prizes. Over all, I think that all the Junior
High students understand more about what will happen to our brain, body, and body functions if we start
smoking.”
